It probably wouldn't have been worth the hassle; especially for a weapon of war. It made sense to shield the second Death Star while it was still under construction, but the Death Star didn't need a shield, it was considered indestructible except for that tiny flaw the engineer hid.
You rig the gates up like the shutters and flashes on cameras so that they open just as the lasers fire. We saw at the top of the computer room that the Empire has very advanced automatic opening and closing technology.

It's a shame they cut this scene,it could've been Jyn's badass moment if she managed to take down the TIE Fighter on her own somehow.
Love how she kept on walking and looking straight ahead as if nothing was there, she didn't even flinch for a sec.

The OT suggests that it's hard to fully enclose a large area in a shield using a generator inside of the shield. Hoth's shield was basically impenetrable but couldn't extend all the way down to the ground - 70 foot tall AT-ATs could walk right in. The second Death Star was fully enclosed in a shield but the shield was generated from outside. Presumably you can't cheat just by using two shield generators to each shield the other.
Edit: Even Star Destroyers have shield generators that are bizarrely vulnerable if they could be positioned inside of the shields they're generating.

I'm talking about that R1 shield that encompassed an entire planet. They couldn't reuse that shield for their second Death Star and Endor? It didn't seem like the power for that shield was coming from the planet, it was coming from that gate station. Unless I'm mistaken.

I thought it covered the entire planet and the generator was where the opening was that they could seal off. Hence why they tried attacking it and finally went with dropping a Star Destroyer on it to take care of it.
But the generator could have been planet side ala RotJ with the second Death Star.
Even though he seems to be underused I still love Krennic. I would love to see a short comic run or something involving him, Galen, and even Tarkin. I'd imagine there won't be much action but I'm sure there's a story to tell between RO's flashback and the movie itself. Can even add stuff with Jyn and Saw

There's a lot from the April teaser that was either retooled or taken out. The way Saw looks, Mon Monthma's briefing, the X-Wing pilots on Jedha. It's never explained why there's a crashed X-Wing in the final cut of the film or why there's one parked outside of Saw's hideout after they're escaping the planet.
The communications tower in the April teaser looks like it's part of a different complex/tower since Jyn and Cassian are running out in front of a shit ton of Imperial Walkers with the Death Star plans in hand and a small tower is in the background with a dish.
I think if they combined the location of the vault and communications tower into one building. It might explain why some things make zero sense (like why a sealed vault has an access door for Krennec and his goons to shoot Cassian). Also, it makes no sense why a vault has a communication dish in the first place.
K2-SO ... I'm going to assume that the reshoots made him funnier because again, the April teaser had lines he didn't use in the final film ... like "the captain said you were a friend, I will not kill you" while in the final cut Jyn shoots another droid from his series and the quip was a bit funnier, less robotic.
MENDELSOHN: We did have multiple, multiple ways of going at any given scenario, we had multiple readings of it. So should they ever decided to, there would be a wealth of ways of approaching these different things. And I know from having seen sort of the crucial kind of scenes throughout it, I know theres vastly different readings of at least four of those scenes.
So in essence theres basically a completely different version of the movie that could be played on like an alternate cut of the entire film.
MENDELSOHN: Absolutely, with enormous differences within I wouldve said 20 or 30 of the scenes.
We don't know when and how the Tantive IV left and docked with the Profundity. I assume not long after that scene, all crew were called aboard and they left as well.
I think that scene would have been smoother if instead of saying, "They're going to Scarif?", he had said, "We're going to Scarif?"
I think it's a shame how much people dismiss Kylo Ren as just an "emo". In a day and age where we get so many shallow "I want power" or "I want revenge" villains honestly I found it kinda refreshing to have a really conflicted and fucked up villain.
I wouldn't mind "conflicted" and "fucked up" at all. It's the whiny baby tantrum throwing that I don't like. He's not imposing or charismatic or threatening, he's just lame.
The fact that none of the characters have an American accent completely undermines Disney's credibility. Star Wars is arguably the most iconic work in Americana and George Lucas intentionally created it to serve as an authentically American mythology. The Empire's British accents deliberately contrasted with the Rebellion to retell the American Revolution against the frame of science fiction, a genuinely American genre.

I've read it. Guess I should have been clearer. By flashback I meant the the prologue scene when Krennic found the Erso's. I imagine there's stuff to tell between that and the rest of the movie. Especially with Saw and Jyn.
So, just saw this and as someone who is not a SW superfan (only saw the first 3 last year) I enjoyed it. The complaints my SO and his friends had didn't bug me one bit (mostly the CGI stuff). In fact I didn't realize Tarkin was all CG. *shrug*
The beginning felt too long. Saw Gerrera's character seemed like a waste. Too many monologues and not enough "real moments". I don't know how else to explain it. I enjoyed how they showed the dirty side of the rebellion but I think I might have enjoyed more showing than telling. Another theme I liked but thought could be explored more was using Jen as a ordinary person who doesn't care about the rebellion or Empire and just wants to live in peace. Tbh I was actually hoping the rebels would kill Jen's father (but maybe not by Diego Luna's character - maybe leave it more vague as to whether or not he would pull the trigger).
Sorry for the ramble thought that the beginning could have been better, but it was okay.
Also the Jedi dudes were awesome and I wish I had more time with them!
I did love everything the battle sequence once it started.
The second Death Star was the important thing, that's where the shield was projected over. Endor itself was just a random moon with teddy bears living on it; and it had a massive fleet keeping watch over it, the Rebels had to fake Imperial security codes to get past them.
The line in the movie is that Raddus is on his ship and that he's GOING to fight. Not that he's already left.
The fighters are scrambling, but nobody's actually left Yavin yet by the time we have our gratuitous Artoo & Threepio cameo (which maybe should have been really brief and ON the Tantive IV at the end, but hey).
Considering the entire fighting force drops out of hyperspace at the exact same time to assault Scarif, it doesn't appear to be a situation where Raddus is already there and the rest of the fleet has to catch up.

I liked it too. C-3PO and R2 D2 are known to be the only characters who have appeared in every Star Wars movie. I'm glad this film kept up with that tradition, it wouldn't have felt the same without them.
That makes sense. I wish they fleshed it out more in the movie. The teaser shows Rebel pilots in shackles being escorted by Stormtroopers through the streets of Jedha City ... assumed that the story unfolded a bit differently and those shots were just leftover or too difficult to reshoot.
The film lived and breathed in the Star Wars of 1977. Clothing, hair, mustaches, floppy disks.
Really sad that Jyn won't be in any further Star Wars movies. She's a fun protagonist.
The fighters acted like WW2 fighters. Like the OT. Fixing one of my main qualms with combat in The Force Awakens where X-Wings turned into helicopters instead of...fighters.
In general the inside of ships in the movie felt perfect.
The combat team's fighting on Scarif was cool.
Rogue One makes Empire Strike Back even better. It shows just how important X-Wings and Y-Wings are in combat against AT-ACTs, presumably comparable with AT-ATs. Their being unable to get into combat in Hoth now actually makes sense with how they might change the battle.
A movie based on Saw would be excellent.
The idea of different factions within the Rebellion is a fantastic one to explore.
Bail Organa and Mon Montha having relatively large roles was a good decision. The bit of politics in Rogue One outdid all of the politics throughout the whole of the Prequels.
Can we talk about how brutal that medium transport getting fucked up by the Star Destroyer was? Got dang.
Loved Chirrut and Baze. This fixed one of the glaring, awful things from the Prequels. In the Prequels it seemed that no one outside of the Jedi had any connection to the Force or the Jedi. And now we get two guys who believe in the Force, have direct connections to the Jedi, but aren't. Its a great piece of world building.
Speaking of. Jedha and whatever planet Cassius rescued Jyn from felt fully fleshed out, unlike every single world from the Prequels. Felt inspired by Blade Runner.
Vader's last scene was fantastic. Despite having names for none of the rebel navy guys, it felt frantic and suspenseful and like their sacrifice was important.
Krennic was appropriately evil enough. Got to wonder which of the three empty seats in A New Hope is his.
Was super happy to see Red and Gold Leaders. Interesting to see the guy that Luke ends up replacing. Sad not to actually see Wedge, although I saw rumors that some guy (not Denis Lawson) had a cameo as his voice?
I had no problems with Tarkin or Leia.
Things I did not like:
The font on the opening title.
Vader's "choke" line. However. Unfortunately. Due to the prequels, this is definitely in line with George Lucas' conception of Anakin as a man who articulates his feelings in such eloquent terms as "I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere." This is a step up in that department.
The film did not have many moments for the characters to breath, like A New Hope does with the pauses to allow Luke and company to breath or contemplate life such as on Tatooine or on the Falcon. One or two of those would have been enough to put this film just a bit higher up.
The Death Star sure got around a lot. I think it only destroying one city would have sufficed. With Star Destroyers destroying the other.

A bit of context for the choke on your aspirations line: Vader hates politics and the political scheming among the Imperial ranks (Death Star/Tarkin Initiatives projects has exacerbated this). Vader holds no rank or formal position within the Empire. The political, ambitious officers of the Empire are beneath him and the Dark Side/Force. Krennick would have been executed on the spot if he wasn't a Director.
