I don't understand playing a game in Japanese if you don't speak Japanese. You're not getting the full impact reading subs. I mean, Pan's Labyrinth is one of my favorite movies ever, but I know I'm not experiencing it the same way as a native Spanish speaker.
The English VA in this game is
excellent. They really nailed it out of the park here. The facial expressions match up perfectly, too. See all of the motions Noctis goes through in the campfire scene at the end.
Thinking about places where they can patch in some cutscenes without having to redesign the game, I feel like the end of Chapter 13 would be a great time for some exposition.
While Noctis is adrift in the crystal, have Bahamut and the past kings show him visions of what happened.
Bahamut shows him visions from the time of the Cosmogony, with Ifrit bringing the scourge, Solheim getting ruined by it, the Astral Wars, Ardyn being chosen by the Aetherean (why is he called Aetherean in some languages and Draconian in others?) and absorbing the scourge, Izunia demonizing him and being later chosen as king, and then the little bits of lore the Royal Arms tell us in their descriptions, Izunia building the wall and creating Insomnia, the second king conquering the land that is now known as Lucis, and all of that.
Come Regis, we could get a few scenes of his journey with Cid, Cor and Weskham, maybe reuse a few more Kingsglaive scenes, with his dialogue with Nyx and Luna, saying that he didn't send Noctis away just to save his son, but for the fate of the world. It would also briefly present Nyx for people who only played the game, before they see his body. He was no king, but he did use the ring.
I think one scene they could patch in without redesigning the game would be a Souls-style lore dump at the beginning. Look up the opening FMV to Dark Souls 1 if you haven't seen it before.
Imagine an FMV cutscene like that, narrated by Regis or Luna, laying out the history of the world of Eos:
1) How there are six gods, and one god betrayed the others, and this led to war, the scourge, and the daemons
2) How the gods chose a king and gave him a ring and crystal to expel the darkness
3) How one nation was split into many, and how the empire waged a centuries-long war trying to reunite the world
4) How one day, a stranger (Ardyn) appeared and introduced magitek to the empire, and they conquered everything except Lucis
5) How the King of Lucis protected his kingdom with The Wall, but then the toll it took on him forced him to withdraw The Wall so that it just covered Insomnia
If they wanted to be ambitious and add a new tutorial, a reworking of the dream sequence with Carbuncle from the Platinum demo would be cool. Child Noctis could explore a dream world, and then wake up and accompany Cor to meet his dad arriving in the Regalia (a scene that was originally planned for the opening but canned.) This could be followed by several scenes showing Regis raising child Noctis as a single father (including the dinner table scene with the green tongues!).
And then THIS, in turn, could lead to a second FMV, where King Regis narrates a montage of current events: Namely, the peace treaty and Noctis being sent away for his wedding. Cut to the existing scene of King Regis saying goodbye to Noct and friends on the steps of the Citadel. Then cut to a new scene of Noctis and Luna looking forward to seeing each other.
THEN you begin the game proper. All in all, it'd add 10-15 minutes to the game's start. It'd establish the lore of the world with clarity and spectacle, and it'd also develop the father-son relationship between Noct and Regis so the payoff is greater when you learn of Regis' death at the end of Ch. 1.
