Sony X800D well - reviewed, 4k+HDR TV with low input lag

Thanks for the advice--I've got a light-controlled dark room, so I'm thinking 2.2. Am I off base there? I think for SDR I'll set my 100% white to either 100cd/m2 or 120cd/m2.

...

So for instance I would use point 2 and point 8 (20 and 80) until I get somewhere, and tweak further from there if necessary?

What about the universal RGB Gain and Bias? I think you'd want to hammer those out before working on 20 to 80, no?

If my meter (i1 Display Pro RevB) is telling the truth I've got crazy blue push at 10% but 20% recovers to something sane.

Have you tried these patterns to calibrate HDR? I guess we'd shoot for 100% HDR to be 374cd/m2?

100 to 120 is perfect.

Yes, with Gain and Bias control start at 80 and balance, then go to 20 and balance. Double check 80 and make any adjustments. Repeat until you are good. Then, move to the full 10-point, starting from 100% and moving towards 0%.

Sometimes you will have some push one way or another, but getting them balanced (a low dE is the top priority, in my opinion. My RGB levels were pretty tight after cal, so you should be able to do this, with a max de if 1.9 and an average dE of 0.71.

Yes, I do own those HDR test patterns now - and to answer your question, I m not completely sure. If you do not do that, you will be clipping all white above that point, but the display also might be quite dim, so I haven't really decided what I like the best, I am still working it out in my head and with my eyes.

Another problem with HDR on this set is that only a few settings are unique (can be set independently) between SDR and HDR:

1.) Brightness
2.) Gamma
3.) ? I dunno if anything else. Please let me know if you find anything else.

sadly i returned this telly.
I did put it in hdmi 2 or 3 i did enable the enchanted function.

Tried every single setting.
I really loved the chrome os!

4k content looked ok hdr was soso on netflix.
Hdr really dissapointed me in the last of us.
Somehow the jump from sd to full hd was bigger in my eyes.

But the factor that made me return it was rainbow coloring of black text on white backgrounds.
Some letters seemed to have a slight other color.
Some screen settings made the effect less but it stayed.
When using it as a pc screen.
And sometimes some strange jittering in movies.

I did every single damn trick i could. But somehow it looked worse than my old ips screen.
Such a shame..

I will get an 4k hdr tv.. But only if the industry standard has been set.

The rainbow colouring was likely that you were running the PC in 4:2:0 or 4:2:2 instead of 4:4:4, unless your screen had some sort of defect.

tried all of those .. it was driving me mad.
the effect was really hard to see.
But once you noticed..
Dear me.

I would agree with this. This should not be an issue when using as a PC monitor in graphics mode, running at RGB 4:4:4

Were you scaling the image up to 4K?

Dear me.

If you were using Windows 10, the display scaling is the probable cause. On native resolution there is no problem, but any amount of scaling and you get kind on colourful shadows on certain programs, most noticeable on black letters on light backgrounds. No amount of messing with scaling, Cleartype or Windows font settings fixed it, but by reverting to the display scaling method used in Windows 8.1 (via a program aptly called Windows 10 DPI Fix), the problem is gone.

OG PS4 has HDR capabilities. So you're good :D

Calibration... this one really depends on your setup and the light in your room. but follow some of the previous posts. I think i even posted my settings at one time. TV ratings has their settings there, but it might be too dark.

You're gonna really enjoy 4k with HDR. Also, remember that Netflix has you pay a bit extra for 4K. But, if you have amazon prime you can enjoy some 4k with HDR. I use the tv apps and they work great, as i can calibrate each to its separate settings instead of trying to toggle between calibration settings on one port. Say, if you use your PS4 for streaming. I rather keep that on gaming, and then the pc on gaming, and the rest on some sort of movie calibration.

Hope that makes sense.

Got it! Thanks a bunch for your advice! Looking forward to setting it up.

didnt try that fix!
but i already tested it native res with 0 scaling.
and it was still looking funky.

100 to 120 is perfect.

Thanks again. Took a run at this before I saw your reply. Got 80 and 20 quite nice and moved to the 10pt, but worked from the middle out, as the middle had a huge hump. By the time I got to 100% it required some pretty dramatic adjustments. Think I'll try it your way.

I could get the greyscale looking nice and flat, but then my gamma tanks about 60% onward. Dives from 2.2 down below 1.8.

For the i1Display Pro what device type are you choosing in HCFR? Non-refresh? I don't see a correction filter for wide-gamut TN (just IPS), and choosing Wide IPS results in radically different readings.

I'm still not 100% sold on this set. I have 24p native running in to it, and regardless of what rtings claims, that motion isn't right--it's too smooth. Even with Motion smoothing disabled it doesn't look like native 24p to me (I work with it every day). I have Cinemotion set to auto. At first I thought it was the dog-shit awful UHD app that doesn't do Atmos, and falls out of sync immediately, but my PS3 shows the same motion issue.

I was also surprised that my PS3 and XBONE required different levels. Don't tell me Microsoft has gone their own way yet again when it comes to video output...

To hit 120cd/m2 I needed Brightness of 5 and Contrast at 92/95. Black Level 50.

I don't yet have a video card that can drive 4K, so I'll have to wait to do that testing. I see the rainbow artifacts Spukc is talking about. Reminds me of DLP projectors.

Mine goes from 2.2 to 2.14 starting at 90%, otherwise good.

Use color space standard HDTV - Rec 709, not wide. When you use the UHD test patterns, then change that to UHDTV - Rec2020. As far as the display, it is a standard White LCD. Maybe that is why some of your readings do not look good.

I haven't been doing too much movie watching on this at all so I can't comment. I usually watch movies on the projector and do not get any judder. This I use for PS4 Pro gaming and iMac second screen. Maybe disable cinemotion?

I think there was a bug early on with XBO and crushed blacks. I don't own so I am not sure if it still exists.

After reading through much of this thread, I caved in and bought the 43" one for my room

So far I'm really loving it, and thanks to the built-in streaming apps, I've mostly switch my entertainment stuff towards the TV from the consoles.

Now if only my Dreamcast would work on it... that should be perfect!

Any recommended apps to use for viewing video files off an external drive would be appreciated (or any app in particular)!

What did you choose in this menu? I used non-refresh display. Perhaps that explains a portion of our differing results?

Are you sure you set to scaling to zero, because when changing resolution Windows automatically sets it to 150, and it takes changing it to zero and a reboot to get completely rid of. It's just that I had the exact same problem with this tv (UK-model KD43XD8077; 290x with Club 3D DP-HDMI 2 -adapter) and it was only noticing that at native w/o scaling the shadows didn't occur that led me to discover the fix.

Looks great! The built in "video" app will take care of this if your drive is properly formatted.

I am looking at those options, and I honesty don't recall. I may have chosen LCD white LED IPS as that is the only thing standing out to me. I am not certain - will this produce a different result than non-refresh display? I'll have to check with some measurements. Non-refresh should be correct, btw.

EDIT: I am almost certain this is what I chose. I don't think this should result in different results.

Kodi, VLC, Plex and MX media apps all good for watchinf your content. I think the built in video app from Sony works perfectly as well. I too use the tv for all twitch, youtube and netflix viewing now. Gives 4K support and stays updated much better than Xbox or PS4 apps.

May be a bit off topic but anyone know how the OLEDB6P series perform input-lag wise?

Worse than the x800d. But pretty good for an OLED. The biggest problem I hear is that its input lag fluctuates, from 35ms to 65ms. But LG is working on a patch.

But as you know, OLEDs excel in blacks, contrast and pixel response times. But they are also very expensive.

Anyone using the Club3D Display Port to HDMI adapter to get 4K 60hz on their TV for their PC?? It works and all that but I noticed the pixel format option in the radeon settings is missing now.

I've set up my TV for the PC under graphics mode and It looks right and the black level I had to turn down a bit so I can get rid of the X in the test picture for color/brightness. It's just that in games that go to full screen mode I supposed the blacks are crushed. I tried out a game and some areas are literally hard to see. I switched picture modes and the crushed blacks were gone.

Plex is pretty fantastic and easy to use if you want to catalogize your BD rips or even just home videos in a great looking interface. It pulls correct cover art, key art, ratings and descriptions for movies and series.
I don't know if the TV can serve as server and client at the same time though, I use my PC as server (HDD is connected there) and stream to my Shield TV via home network.

Hi GAF,

I picked up this TV yesterday and facing a battle with the HDMI ARC input.
My AV receiver doesn't support HDR and I thought the best way around it, other than buying another AV unit, was to have an HDMI cable from the PS4 Pro to the TV and another HDMI cable from the TV to the receiver - splitting the visual and audio streams.

I've managed to get the audio working but it's in stereo mode only - does anyone know how to get 5.1 surround sound working through the audio return control?

People have been discussing common issues with ARC in this thread. I don't use it, but maybe try posting in there.

Personally, I just routed an optical cable from the TV to the AVR. Doesn't that work for you?

The Witness has the best looking HDR out of the half dozen games I've tried on this TV. Absolute night and day difference toggling HDR on and off. Looking at a group of flowers with HDR off you see 3 shades of the colour and it seems like it's a cloudy day. HDR on and it a very bright sunny day and that group of flowers has 6-8 shades instead of 3.

Not a gaming-related question - TV now works flawlessly for me in gaming situations; I sit far enough away from the TV for the Chroma subsampling issues to not be a problem (have to use Y'CbCr 4:2:2 in order to get HDR to work, but it does work wonderfully in Shadow Warrior 2 and Obduction (literally the only two games now on PC that support HDR unless someone can tell me of any others that do) - but I have a PS3 and a handful of the "Mastered in 4K" blu rays that are encoded at 35Mbps. Now, I see that the TV has the option of doing the "Mastered in 4K" upscale option that uses their patented checkerboard upscaling to greatly improve image quality, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to enable it. Any help here would be hot.

You need to set it to Cinema mode. Also make sure any BD player upscaling is turned off.

Does anyone have the 49" version? I'm thinking of returning my 43 and going bigger with the 49". But I hear they have different panels. Is VA vs IPS really that noticeable?

Hmm got it. I usually like to play in the dark so maybe I'll just keep the 43

I have yet to compare the 49 to the 43 in a dark room. but i use the 49 mostly at night to game in a dark room, and then on a lit room during the day and i think i get really good picture out of it. Someone that has transitioned might be able to give you a more accurate account of it tho.

So here's something weird.

There was a defect with the first X800D I bought and I just got my exchanged one in the mail today. The first one was randomly getting this weird purple static all over the picture, and persisted on all inputs and over different HDMI cables. Defective. Sent it back, new one I got today seems fine.

...but: The HDR looks way better on this new set despite being calibrated exactly the same as the first TV. I complained before in this thread that all Xbox One HDR games looked awful and washed out on my first TV. On the new one? They look great. Forza specifically looks fantastic. The PS4 games look better too.

It's not a minor difference, it's a large one. HDR has clicked with me a lot more dramatically now. There's some severe panel lottery with this set I guess.

Seems like the X800E series will at least have the 4K X1 processor instead of the 4K X reality pro which is a step up. No word on nit brightness. But seems 2017 sets will be a step up in every regard.

Sounds good... but hopefully price will not go up. :) Even now X80D is incredibly pricey in the EU.

Samsung 40KU6000 [US KU6300] ~450e [albeit it has pointless HDR support, no WCG]
Sony 43XD8005 ~750e

This is making me nervous. I've feel like HDR hasn't been that great for me and it's already been 2 plus months since I've had this TV so I won't be able to replace it. Maybe I just have the settings wrong?

Any Canadians here?

Is this sold out across Canada?

How many did Sony send here? 5?

Specifically the xbr43x

It's had constant stock issues here in Canada, yeah. Just keep an eye out and jump on it if you see it.

If you're in Toronto, Bay and Bloor Radio downtown still had some last time i was there.

Amazona delisted the 55" version in Germany whatever reason.
Sold out at a lot of places. Hopefully Sony will deliver some informations on the new models soon. Price, nits, release.

So does the HDR on this TV look good and it's just the peak brightness that is holding it back? I don't care so much for the brightness aspect as I do for the colors. I would be playing in a very dark room if that helps!

Mostly just rtings settings with a few tweaks. Obviously there will be some small variation between different panels using the same settings, but this was dramatic.
Then you can't say with any certainty if you aren't doing your own measurements. Panel lottery doesn't work like that especially if you're borrowing TV settings calibrated in a different environment than yours that isn't the exact same panel quality.

I get that, I was just taken aback but just how dramatic the difference was. Literally washed the hell out grey to fantastic looking between the two panels.

ARC doesn't support linear PCM. Change the audio output on your ps4 to DTS to get surround via ARC.

Been saying it for a while. This model is Sony priced so retailers hesitant to stock since they cannot discount on their own and have to wait for Sony sales. You might see stores get 1 or 2 on hand, one demo/kiosk model and one for sale new in back. I had to wait like 4 weeks for London Drugs to get it back in September. Best Buy routinely out as well.

I returned my first x800D because it had pretty bad vertical banding and a dirty screen effect. The HDR on it was ok. On the new unit, the banding is minimal and HDR is noticeably much better, for what it's worth. I used the same exact rtings settings in the same exact room and ambient light.

Got everything sorted, looks like I've got no weird color or other screen issues.

One quick question though, in nvidia control panel, 422 with 8, 10, 12 bpc? Or just do 8pbc @ 422?

edit - I think I'll just stick to 444.

444 won't work for HDR. Other than that, it's fine.
