If I was an Xbox Owner

Gotta say, a lot of the stuff being said about Microsoft is reminding me pretty strongly about what was said about Konami after Silent Hills was canceled.

At the end of the day, if Platinum got shutdown. Would anything of value honestly be lost? Their quality is all over the map.
A map made up of "great" and "awesome."

The footage didn't blow me away like most Platinum Games but I was still looking forward to it, even if I did wind up selling my Xbox.

Microsoft's strategy hasn't made a lot of sense to me. I know they want to transition to more service based stuff, but how the hell are they going to get people to buy into their ecosystem without any content to entice them?

Do they just plan on sucking current Xbox owners dry and calling it a day?

Platinum hasn't ever done a game of this size or scope before. It's very easy to see them being out of their league. Not to mention this game never really looked like it was all together. This isn't like Prey 2 which had a super strong showing.

Maybe it lacked polish, but is normal, the infamous E3 demo it was like more than 2 years away from being released.

Seeing that is not the first time MS pulled similar shanenigans and that PG efficiency in quite high. I'm siding with PG on this, not saying they don't have any fault, and is clear that the scope of the game made things harder, but seems another case of MS screwing a dev.

As a monstruously huge Kamiya fanboy and Platinum games lover, I feel really conflicted about this. On one hand, I worry about P*'s financial state if MS has been withholding payment for a long time, and it doesn't seem like they will ever see it now; plus this can't be good for Kamiya's morale in the short term. On the other, Scalebound was by far the game I was least interested in, from all that Kamiya has ever made, and I'm not shedding many tears over seeing it killed and Kamiya released to hopefully greener pastures.

I really hope this turns out to be for the best in the end, but only time will tell.

This is kind of how I feel as well. Hopefully the team keeps what they have so far intact and just make the game they really wanted to make instead, changing the art style and characters to better suit their vision. Probably wont happen but if there was one thing for sure, the dragon flying and battles did look quite fun.

This is the worst part of it all. Microsoft literally drove Kamiya to sickness. The man is a treasure of the industry.

Agreed, I love this video IGN did about him. Makes me really connected to his style and vision. Games with arcade like fun and sensibility.

Dude, that sucks. Even though I haven't jumped on the XBONE yet it does sadden me to see another IP go down. I wish we were seeing more bright contenders in Microsoft's line up, it would make the industry competition a little more excited to observe honestly.

I don't have an Xb1 (yet) but its still disappointing to hear about the cancellation. I still don't get how threads like these turn into fanboy dick waving. Look at how new console IPs have fared so far this gen. Stuff like this doesn't help anyone anywhere.

Oh wow.

I am much, much more inclined to believe that Microsoft set unrealistic goals and forced feature-creep than that Platinum started missing deadlines after dozens of projects delivered seemingly on budget and on time.

This is looking precisely like the Phantom Dust fiasco, but at a much larger scale.

Because you don't know how many games they've had cancelled.

All the large, independent developers have had games cancelled.

I doubt MS set unachievable goals and watched them waste millions on making the game knowing it'd be impossible to reach, and if they did why would Platinum sign the contract?

It sounds like they both agreed on goals, Platinum ended up coming up short multiple times (hence the 3, maybe 4? delays) and MS had enough of it and called it quits since the game had a bad reception and it wasn't gonna make money back anyways. That's my interpretation of it anyways, sadly I doubt we'll ever get the full truth

Still pretty shitty especially since I was one of the few here on Neogaf that was actually looking forward to it, but like another poster said if Platinum just kept delaying the game constantly MS has to draw the line somewhere.

Maybe the contract was written in the way that MS could constantly change what those milestones were.

It gets the troops all riled up though, so it serves a purpose.

I thought this forum was supposed to above all the fanboyism name calling bullshit.

This feels a bit tenuous. MS E3 2014 as a firesale of panic to reassure brand faithful the console was not doomed. IIRC, almost, if not all, of those titles were announced at E32014 for the first time.

It's a comparison of games that were shown at E3 2014. Sony chose to not show new games that were too far away from being completed and stuck to ones that were previously announced. Microsoft instead chose to show games that were far away from being completed. This is what's being compared. No one is being disingenuous.

It sounds like MS put something in the contract that gave them the ability to move the goalposts, either by shoehorning in features (the MP) or changing deadlines. That way if they didn't want to put money into the game anymore they could just move the goalposts to a place that was impossible to make.

I have no idea. Presumably financial benefit somehow if they felt the game was already at risk?

Maybe they wanted out of the deal but couldn't end it without a certain circumstance

There's no real financial benefit to dropping a game you've already sunk tons of money into and started marketing.

They dropped the game because they no longer had faith in the vision. The game had a cool premise, but always looked janky whenever it was on display.

It sucks, but MS cut there losses rather yhT continue to invest in another stinker.

Meh, I bought a cheap used X1 from a friend to play this and Sunset Overdrive. Guess I'll have to dump it on the hand of some Halo fanboy and stick to my PS4.

Scalebound never really looked like a game where the development was going smoothly.

Seems like a flimsy way to throw out their reputation.

Kamiya has worked on gigantic projects in the past. For their time, RE2 and Okami are gigantic achievements -- much bigger relative to the industry standard than Scalebound would have been. They know what they are doing.

Scalebound never looked as bad as the awful gameplay showings of Recore, for example.

Because you don't know how many games they've had cancelled.

All the large, independent developers have had games cancelled.

If that is the case, then how is cancelling a game after four years instead of during budgeting and prototyping an example of good management, again? You only reinforce my point.

It was voted GAF's most anticipated 2017 XB1 game.

It was actually the only Xbone exclusive I was interested in. I wouldn't have purchased the system for it either, I would have just purchased the game and borrowed the system from a friend. Now I have zero interest in anything the system has to offer. Regardless, as more of the game was shown as it developed, my enthusiasm actually progressively lowered. It just looked like it was turning into yet another attempt to tick all of the trendy, mainstream "mass appeal" boxes and not actually offer much of anything new, and more annoyances than anything.

And? They're not going to give it away so someone else can use it against them. They're not using banjo, perfect dark, jet force, conker, and so on either.
Were all these canceled? No.

Scalebound was never released. So I'm hopeful. I like what I've seen and would rather not see it rot.

Nier: Automata is their first game since Bayonetta 2 that has gotten a half-decent budget and has had a very hands-off approach from the publisher, and lo & behold, it seems like it's up to the usual Platinum quality.

They've definitely had better relations and created more accomplished products with Japanese developers than Western ones, although I really do love Transformers Devastation.

Oh well, officially over it now. Let's hope Platinum Games bounces back and makes something new and incredible.

I will say this, however, STOP TRYING TO MAKE GAMES THAT SHOULD NOT BE MULTI-PLAYER OR CO-OP OR WHATEVER INTO SOMETHING THEY ARE NOT AT THEIR CORE. PLEASE, LET IT STOP!

People will still buy fantastic story driven singleplayer games if they don't fucking suck. I refuse to pay attention to the stats (they are meaningless) because of the games that do really well with multiplayer they have other things going for them that either make it a more natural fit, or are benefiting from loyalty built up from prior efforts. Given a chance to build on a foundation, singleplayer story driven experiences can be as, or more, successful than any other kind of game. I'm not blaming Microsoft here, but I have a feeling deep down that trying to involve co-op multiplayer into this game is at the very core of what went wrong, and why it didn't come together.

Whatever happened to just letting a game be live-enabled in the most basic of ways, such as achievements, game related notifications to friends etc. Why, why must there be co-op play also?

That sucks.

While it the game wasn't really my taste, but Platnium rarely makes anything that I'd consider to be my taste. It's still shitty when a game gets cancelled, especially from a developer that people really love.

So you think Bethesda is the one who is right in the Prey 2 conflict?

No. We basically got one side of the story, but some kotaku sleuthing revealed a pattern that basically confirmed Bethesda were terrible. They had a history of doing shady milestone practices to force the companies into selling thus buying a studio for cheap sealed the deal in that case.

But in this one, Microsoft doesn't have that history. I can't imagine how much they already spent and how much more they think they would HAVE to spend marketing wuse to make this game successful enough. I think QB burned them bad. There is no way they wanted this to fail, so clearly there were enough red flags that Microsoft just couldn't ignore.

Because of that, I need more details. Particularly about the multiplayer stuff.

Nier: Automata is their first game since Bayonetta 2 that has gotten a half-decent budget and has had a very hands-off approach from the publisher, and lo & behold, it seems like it's up to the usual Platinum quality.

In comparison TMNT and Legend of Korra clearly had shoestring budgets (+ you know, Activision, they do nothing but shit on their developer partners) and Miyamoto's idiotic design decisions were mostly at fault with Star Fox being the way it is, Platinum was just hired to do the grunt work of creating the content for what Nintendo had decided/designed and they really did the best with what they were given. Scalebound seems like it might've had some flaws but it would probably still have been very enjoyable game to play and wouldn't have been anywhere near the shit tier of TMNT and a lot better than Star Fox too. Using TMNT, Legend of Korra and Star Fox as any kind of indications of what Platinum can do is dumb beyond comprehension.

I bet you if star fox was developed in house it would've been a better game. Other then star fox, and amiibo animal crossing every other title has been solid from Nintendo first party developers for the wii u

Why would they purposely make them unachieveable? What would they gain from that?

I mean I could understand them being terrible at planning and budgeting but to straight up purposely cause them to fail? I don't buy that.

Read up on GRIN and Fortress, and Human Head's Prey 2. Happens more often than you think.

Actually, I have heard from my friends at MS that the whole gaming division is under heavy scrutiny. I really wouldn't be surprised to see them drastically cut, and even more I highly expect the "Scorpio" to be delayed - that is a piece of information I have been keeping to myself to keep from being labeled a console warrior... We know there will be a new Forza this year, but everything else is up in the air...

I'd expect some kind of Minecraft clone to "diversify" the third-party lineup if Scorpio actually releases this year.

Meanwhile, MS is sitting on all of Rare's properties which we may never see again. If it won't be a major "success", the game will never see release. So probably never see another Banjo, or Conker, or any number of titles. Instead, they have Rare working on a multiplayer (has to be), pirate simulator. Pray Sea of Thieves is a success, or Rare will be next studio canned.

lol @ Gies saying Platinum is "50/50 at best" when they've made, what was it, like two disappointing games?

To be fair to Gies he hates Vanquish and Bayonetta so him saying Platinum are 50/50 is probably him saying the Activision licensed games were the good ones.

I'll be honest I thought this game looked pretty bad at e3 but at least it was something different opposed to the usual suspects that MS seem release every other year. I could see how the game looked in trouble but it's a shame this is the outcome. Can't say I have much hype for Scorpio. Just feel like MS are going to live or die with the same cycle of Forza, Halo, Gears. Curious to hear more of the story.
