Voice chat on the Switch will consist of a paid app on "smart" devices (your phone)

In a case of Stockholm Syndrom I have come around to the idea of voice chat through smartphones. More than half of my party chat experiences with >3 people were awful.

Still flabbergasted though.

I don't think there will be any in-game voice chat in any game becasue the switch doesn't have a mic and there is no mic accessory meaning all voice chat has to be done via a phone or something.
You could do game voice chat using a USB headset similar to how Wii games such as COD did it.

Sad that I'm having to write the above words. It seems like with no headphone jack on the controller this is actually a significant step back for voice chat on the system. It could support Bluetooth headsets of course but since it's Nintendo, it won't.

So I couldn't find any info saying the Switch, Joy-con, or pro controller has a microphone built in.

If that is really the case, it is not surprising that you need a separate device for voice chat...

Yeah I forgot about bluetooth headset. But I really doubt switch is gonna support that either.

True. Though I'm not sure how well it'd work. I mean it'd have to be some kind of micro usb connector for the system but then a standard USB for the dock. Which I guess could totally work... it'd have like an extender/adaptor for the dock.

Who is this system for
For Nintendo fans who want new Nintendo games... oh wait

I'm gonna be one of two people to give them the benefit the doubt and say that there is an in system solution. This makes no sense, even by Nintendo standards. What a clustefuck of unclear information either way.

How do you voice chat if you don't have a phone? I don't own one and neither do my young girls. My wife has one so there is one in the family. Are Nintendo expecting us to buy a phone if we want to chat?

no idea

its seems like a Mic doesnt exist on the system.

So Unlike WiiU/3DS/Vita you cant voice chat out of the box

A headset is not provided and we have no idea if teh audio port on the switch supports headsets and voice

Party chat at the OS level doesnt exist... they want to offload all these standard functions to our own phones while asking us to pay a subscription fee to get the APP

Is so fucking ass backwards and shitty I am at a loss for words

I think it's kind of a bit much to freak out about the straight-up zero details we have about all this, really. There's just readings of vague sentences on a page with no details about a program that isn't launching yet. I think moving this stuff to a companion app could be a really neat idea, let the console itself be very focused and put account management elsewhere, but the actual implementation is really what's gonna determine whether it's neat or stupid.

How about we give it a couple months, huh?

I thought we just did that. We waited for this week to get the details and what we get out of it is a ton of questions and due to the info Nintendo has put out there it directs people into the exact spot we are when it comes to many features.

Be mad... But be mad at Nintendo. This is 100℅ on them when we are less than 2 months from the system they need to sell.

Even if Switch has a headset port on the top that includes mic, who the fuck is going to use that when connected to a TV? It has to be bluetooth or through a joycon/pro controller. We know the pro controller doesn't have a port so either it's bluetooth or via phone instead.

You're killing it Nintendo

I hope this get so much backlash, once Mario Odyssey releases (that is when i plan to buy the console, fuck that 330 eruos price) all this shit isnt needed (and the online is such a wasteland they need to retreat and make it free again).

It happened to Microsoft after the xbox one e3 failure, but something tells me this nintendo sint going to give a flying fuck even if the ship is completely sinking.

from the Splatoon page - Sounds like all voice chat will be through a smart phone only. Utter madness

Smart Device Support – An upcoming smart-phone application for the Nintendo Switch system will enhance matchmaking and allow for voice chat options.

Yeah. Pure insanity. And I don't even really play online, but WTF.

The idea of an extra phone app for stuff like the others is ofcourse cool, the idea that voice chat is not also built into the system is fucking nuts.

Also, my old smartphone dies fast as is, who the hell wants to waste battery life, on their important phone, powering voice chat (and even while playing at home)?

I don't even own a smartphone, how f*cked am I if everything about Switch online are mobile apps?
Good news is that I won't have to pay for the online services...

This is the one thing I'm really scratching my head over. I love Nintendo but wtf man? This cannot be the only way voice chat will work on this system.

At this point while it would be a nice surprise if they suddenly scrambled towards soz guys for being unclear, I don't know what anyone expects. The naming of the Wii U followed by the absolutely terrible marketing and confusion was an insight of what to expect for the Switch. Some of us did think Nintendo would learn a thing or two from the Wii U though.

GAF, one of the most knowledgeable gaming sites on the net is even finding it hard to make sense of what the fuck Nintendo are saying let alone doing. Half the time it is as if their EU/US PR is translated from Japanese via Google Translate. Then you realize the Japanese PR in its native tongue is just as unclear and or mind boggling.

Their own website states voice chat is an app.

Online Lobby & Voice Chat app

So you can just hit a mute button on the headphones instead of sliding the volume slider done/hitting the minus volume button?

Your phone didn't already come with an inline mic earbuds? Weird.

Still doesn't make sense to me that they would release third party Zelda "Switch" inline mic earbuds to be used with your phone.

Wait, so I can't just plug in a head set to the system and open up a party chat menu, like you can on the xb1/ps4, to chat with my friends?

Is that why there is no headset included with the system ?

This is very forward thinking actually. System level voice chat is dumb, game level is beyond dumb. Both are a waste of ressources. People who want to chat have access to tools companies spend ages perfecting, so there's no contest. This is dodging a bullet and setting up a more enjoyable play space in one fell swoop, an ultimate mute button of sorts.

Nintendo may be the Reapers, because the indoctrination is real.

What the hell is your problem, Nintendo?
Toradora_-_Taiga_Slap.gif

Do you even research your competitors?

I hope Nintendo pulls a 180 on these stupid policies faster than you can say Xbox One.

I'm confused. Why are they selling Switch branded earbuds with inline mic if you can only use your phone?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N9R7HEU/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Seems weird to sell things like this just to use with your phone that probably came with one.

That's from PDP. I don't know if they get the full picture of what the hardware is going to be like ahead of time. Or they did and that could very well just be for your phone. Not every phone comes with earbuds with a mic.

Doesn't look like it. The fact this app is behind a pay wall is even more dumb when you consider the PS4 has party voice chat without a sub. At the very least Nintendo should have OS wide voice chat behind their paywall. Not a damn mobile app.

Hopefully heat from this bollocks decision gets their ass in gear to sort it. I then ask though does the new controller even have the ability to have a mic plugged in?

So am i the only one who got from the conference that it's gonna be "Switch has built in party chat, but with the app you can join the party chat from your phone too", cause that's what the thing sounded like from the conference to me.

Game voice chat through your phone instead of the console. Nintendos New gimmick.

Next they will be telling us just to call our friends and use loud speaker.

What would be the point if that if every Switch could do it natively? Can at least one person who is in complete denial of this feature please explain that to me? Why would they go to the trouble of developing a phone app that does something the Switch could already do?

Okay this is honestly astonishing, absolutely astonishing.

It's inconceivable to believe anybody involved in the creation of this console could even be gamers.

How can you not understand basic functions like this, have they never played online games? Do they not have friends or family members who can tell them what they look for in an online gaming experience? Where's the market research? Focus groups?????

Exactly

This is madness

A group chat service on your smartphone. You know what else can group chat? Your smartphone.

Seems like Nintendo is keeping that burden off their servers this way.

I did, but only because the alternative sounds crazy. So crazy, that I'm not going to freak about it until Nintendo confirms it even though most of the language around it suggests it's the case.

Yeah I don't get it either. Sony has an app, but it's mostly for sending and reading PSN messages, and trophy/profile related stuff.

The fact Nintendo on their website list it at the bottom under the paid sub bit as an "app" makes it pretty clear if you ask me they aren't signing and dancing about their great new OS wide voice and party chat system. Like who would advertise an app before telling you about what their OS has in store? They're actively asking you to ignore their own consoles OS and go and use your Apple or Android branded phone? Makes zero sense if you have OS wide support.

What the hell is your problem, Nintendo?
Do you even research your competitors?
I hope Nintendo pulls a 180 on these stupid policies faster than you can say Xbox One.

of course they do. where do you think they got the brilliant idea to charge for online? they even saw that they had to "give" some "free" games in exchange, and very reluctantly seem to agreed to do so.

Your phone didn't already come with an inline mic earbuds? Weird.

Mine actually didn't. But yeah, it is weird to make that stuff but who knows, maybe it's for people like me whose phone didn't come with them or whatever. I just assume these are meant to be used with the app and not the Switch console itself, because if it is for the Switch console then it's useless for console mode becuase you'll be too far from the console, unless they have a silly long lead which then they are useless for portable mode (because you'll have to bunch up the lead) because the controllers don't have any audio ports.
