You could do game voice chat using a USB headset similar to how Wii games such as COD did it.I don't think there will be any in-game voice chat in any game becasue the switch doesn't have a mic and there is no mic accessory meaning all voice chat has to be done via a phone or something.
Question is whether the app's free with an online gaming subscription.
100% Stockholm syndrome if you think this is a good idea.In a case of Stockholm Syndrom I have come around to the idea of voice chat through smartphones. More than half of my party chat experiences with >3 people were awful.
Still flabbergasted though.

Sad that I'm having to write the above words. It seems like with no headphone jack on the controller this is actually a significant step back for voice chat on the system. It could support Bluetooth headsets of course but since it's Nintendo, it won't.
For Nintendo fans who want new Nintendo games... oh waitWho is this system for
I think it's kind of a bit much to freak out about the straight-up zero details we have about all this, really. There's just readings of vague sentences on a page with no details about a program that isn't launching yet. I think moving this stuff to a companion app could be a really neat idea, let the console itself be very focused and put account management elsewhere, but the actual implementation is really what's gonna determine whether it's neat or stupid.
How about we give it a couple months, huh?
Who is this system for
from the Splatoon page - Sounds like all voice chat will be through a smart phone only. Utter madness
Smart Device Support – An upcoming smart-phone application for the Nintendo Switch system will enhance matchmaking and allow for voice chat options.
I'm confused. Why are they selling Switch branded earbuds with inline mic if you can only use your phone?

Seems weird to sell things like this just to use with your phone that probably came with one.
And people really thought Nintendo would finally have modern online features 🤣

I'm gonna be one of two people to give them the benefit the doubt and say that there is an in system solution. This makes no sense, even by Nintendo standards. What a clustefuck of unclear information either way.
Online Lobby & Voice Chat app
So you can just hit a mute button on the headphones instead of sliding the volume slider done/hitting the minus volume button?
This is very forward thinking actually. System level voice chat is dumb, game level is beyond dumb. Both are a waste of ressources. People who want to chat have access to tools companies spend ages perfecting, so there's no contest. This is dodging a bullet and setting up a more enjoyable play space in one fell swoop, an ultimate mute button of sorts.

Wait, so I can't just plug in a head set to the system and open up a party chat menu, like you can on the xb1/ps4, to chat with my friends?
Is that why there is no headset included with the system ?
I'm not trying to be funny but is anyone really that surprised by any of this?
How long has this thing been in development?
This sounds really stupid.
So am i the only one who got from the conference that it's gonna be "Switch has built in party chat, but with the app you can join the party chat from your phone too", cause that's what the thing sounded like from the conference to me.

What would be the point if that if every Switch could do it natively? Can at least one person who is in complete denial of this feature please explain that to me? Why would they go to the trouble of developing a phone app that does something the Switch could already do?

What the hell is your problem, Nintendo?
Do you even research your competitors?
I hope Nintendo pulls a 180 on these stupid policies faster than you can say Xbox One.
Your phone didn't already come with an inline mic earbuds? Weird.
Still doesn't make sense to me that they would release third party Zelda "Switch" inline mic earbuds to be used with your phone.
