Voice chat on the Switch will consist of a paid app on "smart" devices (your phone)

It's crazy. When Sun/Moon came out I was talking to my friends on discord and arranging trades and stuff. Next bout I'll be expected to pay in order to trade but I'll get a neat feature in the form of a phone app that does what I was already doing, although without the ability to use my nice mic on my PC.

"Plug in your headset to your system"

Wording implies it connects to the the actual Switch. Even if it's just a 3.5mm, there'd be no reason to plug it into the Switch if you can't use the mic on the Switch.

The fuck is going on.

Supports my theory then. The party interface/invite interface is all on the app, while the system has the chat voice support.

You plug in the headset to your Switch, go to the app, invite friends, and then go play.

It's crazy how after one big presentation and about less than 2 months from launch and we still can't get basic information like what features are actually supported by the Switch and how much online subscription will cost.

This feel half-baked and rushed as hell.

So I pay for a service that gives me an app on my phone that allows me to do what my phone could already do for free (and probably using other, better, more battery efficient apps)?

That's an...interesting tactic. I'm very curious to see their sales pitch for this online service, because it's going to have to really impress to get people to fork over money.

Considering that the online fee isn't going up until the fall because it's that unfinished, yes it is half-baked. People were joking on Twitter, but it really does feel like Nintendo just rolled out the first Early Access console.

Man, right before the conference started, I thought maybe Kimishima had finally got Nintendo in touch with reality again.

The mobile app has got to just be something they threw together for the time being until they can get their network and the Switch OS up to par.

So this was confirmed then ? Not that I had high hopes after seeing there was no headphone jack on any of the controllers but wow.
It's the year 2017 and Nintendo is asking me to pay a subscription to be able to chat with my friends, on my phone.

I hope for the same price they generously include a Nintendo Browser™ that revolutionizes the game and allow me for the first time ever to browse the internet on my laptop.
Fucking hell.

Surely they don't think this is good... Surely? Couldn't the switch itself just run a version of the app to do voice chat?

Who the hell is going to start connecting headsets to their phone to chat to their friends on a gaming system.

As long as I can hear the game and voice/party chat at the same time, I don't really care how it's done. I use my iPhone for literally everything anyways.

Hopefully the service is like $30-40 and comes with more perks. This is really the only issue I have.

It's almost like they are trying to find ways to charge for an online infrastructure, without having to create an online infrastructure.

Crazy pills continues.

This is stupid. I can already chat on my phone. What if I want to listen to a game on headphones and chat at the same time?

Because isn't it more CUMBERSOME to carry a HEADSET around when you can just TALK on YOUR PHONE that you take EVERYWHERE ALREADY?

(Paraphrased an actual Reggie quote.)

Let's just say the app is a brilliant idea, for the sake of argument. How do they expect you to hear the game and the chat at the same time? put one earbud in? Wear a headset over the earbuds and endure the pain? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills! How did we get here.

You could also be reminded that there are games on your phone or that with your phablet with you the 3DS is actually more easily portable, but I am sure Nintendo can be more clever in telling us how we do not need to buy their system as we already have too many devices ;).

Why do I need the app at all??
Maybe they want to collect anonymous data on their customers. To improve their services and games of course, maybe sell it to other people on the side but mainly to improve Nintendo.

That's my guess anyway.

Lmao!!!!!! This post has me rolling. It's 1am and I'm tried AF but HAHAHA

Nintendo are a joke lets face it. They are an analog dinosaur in the digital age.

Nintendo fans best get ready for a new system in 3 years time, after this one flops

I think the app on the phone is a way to gate children from speaking to strangers.
That would be stupid as shit.

They just showcased their parental controls with that Bowser ad. You're telling me that the more logical solution to abusive people on the internet is to gate voice chat through a smartphone app, rather than merely putting in some parental controls on the Switch?

Nintendo is literally a company where, at the proposal of this idea, not one fucking person raised their hand with an objection. Let this sink in...

Oh wait, you can't, because no rational thinker can come remotely close to comprehending it.

Even if this app is somehow.. just for the interface.. it still doesn't explain why it exists at all. It's creating a two screen experience out of something that should be a one screen experience :S

While I agree this is a dumb decision, it doesn't bother me at all. I can't even remember the last time I used voice chat.

That's nice. But a supposed 'modern' console that doesn't even offer the option of voice chat through the console? That's some classic backwards Nintendo thinking.

Has the issue of being not able to hear the system's audio while voice chatting through a headset on your smartphone been resolved yet? How does that work?

...What. Are they for real right now? That's the best reason that they can come up with?

Speakerphone.

Same company.

Oh God. I managed 100hrs with monster hunter using that thing. Other people sounded like they were howling into a tincan phone. One player insisted he would just type on a keyboard because it was quicker.

And it Nintendo used a code for regustration IIRC meaning you couldn't sell the microphone on.

No, I mean Nintendo probably doesn't understand why you wouldn't want everyone else in your immediate vicinity to hear what other people playing with you are saying.

Speakerphone works on a smartphone without Wii Speak.

Man, right before the conference started, I thought maybe Kimishima had finally got Nintendo in touch with reality again.

Is he not a financial guy, accountant type and promised the market Nintendo like profits would return ?

He did what I expected tbh.

They already have advanced IR sensors pointed towards your crotch at all times, to improve their services and games of course.

That was designed very specifically for animal crossing and it made some sense in that context.

I don´t use voice chat so i don´t care personally. Still incredibly stupid if this is really it. (haven´t looked it up).

Also known as the waifu sensor. It´s how they´re going to decide which waifu will be in the next fire emblem when you play fire emblem warriors.

This brings me back 13 years ago when i was playing RE Outbreak File 2. No mic support so I had to use teamspeak on my pc.

Honestly if the DS has voice chat I don't see why the switch can't. If this is true, someone REALLY fucked up.

I don't get it. The details on this console and online service is strangely backwards and unmodern. Does every feature come from Iwata's ideas from back in 2005 or whatever and the "new" Nintendo hasn't dared to change them at all? I just don't get it. They seem to be even more backwards than before with this console.

I don't get why they wouldn't just make a headset accessory and call it a day. Are they trying to innovate? Be kid-friendly? All of the above? What?

Instead of having some sort of bulky gamer headset, you’ll be able to do it right off your smartphone, put in your earbuds that you use for your standard mobile device. We think that’s a pretty sweet solution.

Wow I love this courageous attempt to spin this workaround as a plus; props for effort.

2 months!? Dude we're actually six weeks from launch!

Why do we still have so many unanswered questions this close to release is embarrassing.
