Do you prefer the English or Japanese dub of the new Zelda BOTW trailer?

English. That over the top screaming and whining in the Japanese version is too grating for me.

Edit: Wow the Spanish version actually shits on the English and Japanese ones.
 
Latin American Spanish for me. Japanese sounds good too, I like my cheese and melodrama. I grew up with Mexican telenovelas and their over the top acting overlaps quite a bit with Japanese-style VA.
 
Very interesting to see the different takes of that cry. I thought it was over the top and I chuckled when I heard it.

They should change the animation for each VO. English version: Zelda cries and Link hugs her. Japanese version: Zelda screams and Link holds his hands up and backs away. Haha
 
I prefer the voice acting of the Japanese version EXCEPT for the *crying.*

And the most noticeable thing for me is that the old lady voice in the English trailer sounded more like a younger person pretending to be old.
 
I preferred the Japanese VA. The old woman narrator actually sounded old, and Zelda actually sounded grief-stricken. In English it sounded like a fake old voice, and Zelda sounded dull and like the VA wasn't particularly invested.
 
This is some strange cultural thing. I live in Sweden and we don't dub movies or series. The exception is cartoons 4 kids. I would never watch or play anything dubbed. If I play a game made in japan I would naturally want it in Japanese (of course with english subtitles)

My awareness of the game beeing dubbed to English would annoy me to the point that it would severely damage my enjoyment of the game and could possibly be a gamebreaker for me.

I sure hop that we get to choose here in Sweden!

("Fun" fact. Sony didn't quite get that we considered dubbing was something for kids and dubbed resistance 2 to Swedish. It was the stupidest thing ever. There are like five people in Sweden who's working with voice overs so re2 hade the same actors as the shows my kids watched)

Really? I might be biased (haven't played a game in Spanish in a long time) but while Zelda was better in the Spanish version, I liked the English one more.
 
They are actually all pretty good and fit the culture (as far as other media Ive seen from each respective language, I'm no expert).

The overtly intense crying in the English one would sound off I think. :/
 
Prefer the Japanese by a shitload. Both the older male and female voices sound so much better in Japanese than in English. English VO sounds like young people trying to sound old. And I absolutely can't stand English Zelda. It's not even the cry, just the voice itself. Does not sound like a teenager at all.
 
Japanese. I prefer Zelda to have the otherworldly feel so having a language I don't understand makes it feel more mysterious. Kinda like Ico and SOTC.
 
The Latin American and Japanese voices definitely sounded better to me.
I hope we get dual audio because this Zelda has the Ghibli feel.

I would've actually liked a made up language. Like Gravity Rush. Though assume this here has a lot more voice lines.
 
Japanese. English was fine, but I thought the Japanese was much more dramatic and fit better. I'll probably play it in Japanese if it's an option, but I'll be ok playing it in English if there is no option.
 
English sounded more like an actual person crting.

Japanese sounded like your typical anime/game dub. Which isn't a bad thing depending on who you ask.

It's a matter of preference.

I'll go English.
 
The first VO in the English dub sounded like a kid so by default JP dub I guess lol. Would be interested to hear more of other locales though, the German one wasn't too bad.

I think I preferred the Japanese, but I don't understand any Japanese so for all I know it was horrible. But I think the not understanding of it maybe it more acceptable to me lol

But she totally wiffed how Zelda cried on screen. Up until that point I was happy with the English dub. I'm now worried that Zelda will have problems emoting throughout the rest of this game.
 
Japanese for sure. If there isn't a dual audio option I'll be very disappointed. This is the first Zelda with voice acting. If we have to have it, give us some damn options.
 
Given optional language support, I'd choose one I can't understand. Personally I'd prefer what Ueda games do with their own language to be used for Zelda.

Theyare also acting really well in that trailer, even the old lady, and thats probably the inferior part of the voice acting, even if its not really bad at all.

Funny. I'm not a Spanish speaker but I thought the old lady had the most gravitas out of all the VAs. I was particularly annoyed how much weight the old man retelling Link of his past sounded. I might as well mention Spanish Zelda had the best cry so far but she's still falling a bit short on intensity. THere must be someone who hits it right between the Japanese actress and the Spanish actress.
 
I liked both but the Japanese voices sounded much better imo. Especially Zelda.

Anyone got a link to the Japanese trailer with subtitles?
 
After first watch it was Japanese but after watching them both again, I feel like I was biased against the English VA because I assumed it would suck. I think I'll go English so I don't have to read during acted cutscenes.

Yeah. The english voice of Zelda didnt sound into it, and it sounds off.

Preference wise, I really like the Spanish one. Japanese 2nd I suppose.

The level of acting of the actress doing the old woman's voice is REALLY good, the problem is that you can clearly also hear its an 40 year old actress trying to do an 80 year old voice.

The old man in spanish is freaking amazing, and so is the king, but thats becuase we spaniards usually love our charismatic "raspy" deep voices.
A funny anecdote, for example, is that americans dont usually like that type of voice it seems, becuase Disney Spain lended some of our best voice actors to make the spanish buzz voice, that you would consider "deep voice" (Ramon Langa the usual voice of Bruce Willis; Jose Luis Gil the actual spanish Buzz Lightyear voice; Constantino Romero, that was the voice of Dart Vader and Mufasa, may he RIP...), and everyone was rejected because Pixar said "they sounded too raspy, like they smoked 20 cigarretes a day". At the end they choose a mediocre voice actor that only does voices for children toys here, so not someone we really like in Spain.


Zelda voice is really good, but her cry was the worst part (without being bad of course).
I think my favuorite Zelda though is the Italian one, has the best voice (very similar to the spansih one actually) but her cry is just perfect.
 
the old woman and old man sounded perfect in japanese,but zelda definitely sounds too young..i get it that some japanese women really still sound like that, but for a westener she sounds like a child

that being said,i have no problems with the cry itself..it all depends from what is the context...if the cry is about her losing her whole kingdom ..i can see her "screaming" like that..you would not be ok after something similiar..it would not be a "normal cry"
 
Thanks to this thread, I listened to the french version of the trailer and since I have young kids, I will play in french if I want them to appreciate the story. It worked for FFXV and it sounds ok for BOTW.

Really don't care about japanese dubs really...

Thanks for the insight that's some cool info. I agree we prefer male voices with more bass but I can feel why the raspy tone is preferred when speaking in Spanish. It did feel fitting in that trailer even though in the back of mind I was thinking it's somehow right in certain ways and wrong in others.

As for the Italian actress she has the best voice but I'm still out to lunch on how she sucks you in with her crying. The way she leaves it hanging is a great way of drawing you in but it sort of comes across as now Zelda is crying on purpose instead of crying out of frustration.
