I really considered selling my Wii U for a Switch. It would be like a $100 upgrade, which is nothing. But the Switch doesn't have many games I'd be interested in right away. And I can play the big headliner Zelda on my Wii U. Plus, I still have lots of Wii U titles I haven't finished, like Captain Turd's Treasure Tracker or Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze. If I got rid of my Wii U, I'd never be able to play or finish them.

I don't see used Wii Us dropping in price, either, frankly, because of the above. People can't play these outstanding games without one. That, coupled with the limited hardware out there, tips it to Zelda Wii U for me.

Hmm, this would actually be such a brilliant idea. So it won't happen. But damn, cross-buy would be a very strong incentive in getting a Switch as a Wii U owner.

It will be Wii U for me as well. Switch would be nice but after all the dust settled from the good and bad news this week I doubt I'll be getting one anytime soon (plus I want to get PSVR first anyway and thus no way I could get a switch quickly too). I have no problem with it too, Wii U version looks great so it's all good for me. Portable zelda would've been nice but I'm fine playing on the Wii U.

I'm getting it on Switch because a) I'll be transitioning there this year anyway, even if Spring looks like it'll be slow, b) I sort of just want to be there day one with a console even if it's a bit silly--haven't done that ever really, c) there isn't much holding me back on Wii U still; I've completed most of my collection for that system.

But yeah, I considered just doing it on Wii U after the conference and getting Switch for Mario during the holiday instead.

I wasn't around GAF at the time, but was there much thirst for the GCN version of Twilight Princess? And if there was, was it only because people couldn't buy a Wii?

It was no different a decade ago on GAF. Plenty of arguments over which is the superior version(I preferred widescreen and pointer aiming far more myself on Wii), but the discussion raged on due to the unique variations in each version.

It's a bit less interesting now. The two versions of BotW are nigh indistinguishable and have feature parity. The Wii also had a diverse launch catalogue aside from Zelda, which gave that system a stronger identity. It felt like the entire forum bought a Wii(or were struggling to find one for months), much different with the Switch today.

Most of the TP GC supporters did seem to carry a stark anti-motion agenda, aimed largely at its use in TP. It didn't quite feel like a war on Wii, but a war on sword waggle in particular. Here, no one seems to want a Switch only for Zelda.

My reasons? One; I've realized just how big a game BotW is to me and, like The Last Guardian, I know I'd feel some regret not playing the "best" version out there. Two; I can sell my Mini NES (which I have used a total of 0 times since the week after launch) and OG PS4 (which I would have sold already but no warranty sticker due to fan cleaning) to get at the very least £150 off the asking price. Three; I'm going to buy one eventually anyway, might as well get it now when I know I can take the financial brunt.

For my specific use-case its the best way to play. Some would say being tethered to the TV is a compromise compared to being able to play wherever, be it on the go or in bed, on what looks to be a real good screen to boot that is vibrant and has great viewing angles.

By far the most likely scenario for me at the moment is picking Zelda: BotW up for my Wii U. I just don't see enough reasons to be optimistic about the Switch for me just yet. If I didn't have the previous console? There'd be no question. If I found value in portable gaming systems? I think I'd also be excited.

As it is, I'm just too tentative to commit to Switch.

Pre-ordered in 2014 for a mere $45 CAD.
If I were to get it on the switch I'd be looking at $550 which is way too much for a single game.

And there's Cemu if I want to play at 1080p/4k

The Wii U version is 45-50 euro in several places compared to 70 euro for the Switch, so that's an aditional incentive.
