Voice chat on the Switch will consist of a paid app on "smart" devices (your phone)

A) The only way we've seen voice chat mentioned is in relation to an app.

B) The console is 45 days from launch. I'm not comfortable waiting until I'm told when the thing has preorders already. There's no logical reason to hold this info back unless it's either 1) seen as bad news they're trying to cover up to 2) they really aren't sure yet how they're implementing voice chat because they're incompetent goons.

Tbh, if I could control party settings on my phone that'd be nice. PS4 OS is still kind of slow at times when joining parties and whatnot.

Nintendo's solution still sounds terrible, but I'm gonna wait and see if this app is just an extension of Switch voice chat capabilities or of it's mandatory. If it's the latter then lol why?

That's one hell of an odd way to sell the convenience of carrying a secondary device to play games in addition to the device they anticipate you are already carrying.
 
The more that comes out about the online service the more I realize that I'm just not going to pay for it. Having to use a phone for voice chat is just so unnecessary. I'm not willing to pay for something that inferior. It sucks because I'd really like to play Splatoon 2, Mario Kart, Smash, and Monster Hunter, but I just can't.

Oh Reggie. This is the same guy that defended WiiU's touch screen not having multi touch capability by saying it would be too hard/uncomfortable to use the pad by holding it with one hand. Then in the next breath is talking up the official stylus which would require exactly that.

I can also talk on the phone while simultaneously using the same phone to do shit, like play a game. So even phones can do it.
 
I mean it could be a really nice idea but..... If the quality / ease of use isn't absolutely on point then won't Discord simply be a much better option? That has a very good mobile app...

Discord wont automatically put you in a room with the randoms online. Thats the only thing I can think off
 
I need more details on this. If I want to chat with friends in portable mode while using headphones for gamesound, how does this work ?
I cant believe they want you to put 2 headsets on.
 
How is this even going to work? How will I use the phone app if I have headphones plugged into the Switch? Do one ear Switch, one ear phone?
 
So the paid online still looks like hot garbage.

The voice over phone thing is incredibly dumb for a home console. It's not something immediately intuitive. I can see the use case for it: Out and about and want to get a game of Splatoon 2 in. The problem here is the Switch needs to be hooked to the internet to do this, which means it's either tethered to your phone chewing up data, or you have access to a Wifi spot in which case the data concerns are gone and you could just do the voice chat over the system itself.

Also what about game audio vs chat audio? Will both be pumped through the phone headset? If not then you're missing potentially useful audio cues because who the hell plays games with volume in a Starbucks through the speakers?

These are SOLVED problems. Nintendo is making it more complicated than it needs to be for reasons that are currently beyond me.

The fact that you need to get your phone out of the pocket if you're on the way and hold two devices in your hands for that makes so much complicated that the UI doesn't even matter anymore.
 
Being able to do everything through a Smartphone/Tablet application is a great option, but it shouldn't be the only option. I really don't know what they're playing at.
 
Chat processing and data are so marginal I can't believe anyone is actually trying to use hardware resources as an excuse.

I say this as someone who works as a software analyst for software that interfaces with analog and VoIP systems.
 
This is just so funny to me. I can't imagine being in an office and thinking that offloading your voice chat to a phone would be a good idea. Not to mention this is for a paid service.

I guess what a gaffer said in the dev kit thread was right. Maybe the OS really uses only 800 mb of ram leaving 3,8 for the games, but I think that the reason it's not a superb optimization but the fact it's barebones, so Nintendo opted to leave other things (like voice chat and probably all other online gaming related stuff) to specific apps.
Do we already know how much storage is reserved for the OS?

Quite frankly, it's fucking Nintendo. Remember when they didn't have online play back in the day and said that they want to do it in a different way when they enter this space. What different way did we get? Fucking friend codes and no voice chat. There is no reason for them to be pulling this shit after over 10 years experimenting with online play. This mobile app should be as an extra option, voice chat should be usable without a phone directly through the Switch. Anyone defending it - if it ends up only being available through a phone - is an blind, idiot fanboy.
 
I don't know enough about this app or their online service yet to criticize either, so I won't. I'm willing to keep an open mind until they show their hand.

You don't understand what they're doing because they haven't given us all of the details yet. None of us fully understand Nintendo's plan here. I get why some people are upset about this, but lets not start complaining about things we don't yet know.

The only thing I can think of is they want to use some phone specific stuff ? What like use gps to match you with nearby switch players for local coop or some thing like that ... Otherwise doesn't really make sense.

I think a Nintendo Switch community app that rolls streetpass, miiverse, friend lists, voice chat, and everything else into one would be really cool if done properly.

Did you see how long the controller cords are on the NES Classic (and Famicom Classic with hardwired controllers)? Nintendo might expect people to sit close to the console.

Probably tons of enthusiasts here. However if this information plays out I predict online features are dead as a doornail on switch . You'll have Splatoon with zero chat basically. Think about ps3 with no party chat and no included headset, was still a graveyard even with perfectly acceptable online game chat. This will be a wasteland.
 
This has to tie into something for their mobile games. Like a Nintendo hub with a friend's list and other Nintendo account services.

Joking aside, I think this whole thing is absurd if Nintendo is going to keep voice chat exclusive to the app. Having said that, we shouldn't be surprised in the slighted. The company is still run by a bunch of out of touch old men. I mean, some of these Switch decisions seems like Nintendo is just setting itself up for failure. And a little part of me will say it serves them fucking right if it happens.

4gb of RAM is absolutely enough for voice chat.

360 had 512 fucking gigs of RAM and had cross game chat. Something that PS3 was heavily criticized for not having.

You're talking about slow parties in a thread about an external smartphone app to do console voice chat?

The only way i can approach justifying this is if Nintendo is just pushing off the parental responsibility of 8 year olds talking to strangers online off of them and onto Apple. But that's a big stretch.
 
So 100% of you have phones. 99% have their phone out on the couch when sitting in front of their console. And 98% are texting while playing games.

And thus Nintendo's solution is the worst thing introduced to mankind ever before it even comes out. Got it!
