What system are you buying Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild for?

I have WiiU version preordered for $35 CAD, and the Switch just does not seem in the right place (yet) to jump aboard for System + Pro Controller + Game = $700 CAD.

Picking up the Wii U version, solely because I won't be getting a Switch until the main games I'm interested in (Xenoblade 2, Shin Megami Tensei) are out. These won't be released any time soon.

I would have but I traded in my Wii U to gamestop for $175 last month on a ps4 pro trade in thinking I would get a Switch at launch. The reveal deflated any hype I had for the system and I am now Nintendoless for the foreseeable future. Sucks I won't be playing Zelda but Nier will make me not care.

Wait they are not giving any features for the tablet screen? It's just gonna be off the whole time? Is this confirmed?

I can't even use it to type onto the touch screen to name my horse?

Late reply, but: https://www.wired.com/2016/06/zelda-breath-wild-aonuma-demo/

"Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata instructed Miyamoto to create games that capitalize on the Wii U's unique GamePad controller, with its motion controls and touchscreen...The developers tried the dual screen approach with Zelda, but rejected it.

"We realized that having something on the GamePad and looking back and forth between the TV screen and the GamePad actually disrupts the gameplay, and the concentration that the game player may be experiencing," Aonuma said. "You have your car's GPS system on your dash. If you had it down in your lap, you're going to get into an accident!" Still, you can play the game entirely on the GamePad screen, if you like. Considering how vast the world is, it would keep you from monopolizing the TV.

It's a safe bet that Aounuma favored single-screen gameplay with a standard gaming controller because Nintendo is bringing Breath of the Wild to NX, its next console. The two games will play identically. "I'm not going to create something where the users are going to have a different experience,"" he says."

I'm really upset that they gimped this version on purpose for no reason at all other than to sell Switch's

Pre ordered on WIi U.

I bought this Wii U to play Zelda years ago and i am going to do it, new hardware be damned!

Switch does not impress me at launch, i barely play my Nintendo products compared to PS4 and PC anyway.

As long as the Wii U version doesn't have major performance issues, I'll be getting on that platform. I don't have the money for the Switch which isn't appealing at launch anyway, and I've never spent enough time playing my Wii U as it is.

If it doesn't run well on Wii U...that will be a complete betrayal of their fans, IMO. People have been waiting for Zelda U for years and years, and to deliver a substandard experience would be a real slap in the face to those who did buy their least-supported system in decades.

I am.
Pre-ordered in 2014 for a mere $45 CAD.
If I were to get it on the switch I'd be looking at $550 which is way too much for a single game.

And there's Cemu if I want to play at 1080p/4k
I'm only spending $348 on the Switch and BotW. Is it really that much more in CAD?

Well that's a load of bullshit. You're telling me it can't be used for maps and menus at least? This was the core design of the Wii U and now they say it's a distraction? Darksiders 2 used the game pad for inventory/map and some other stuff I think (it's been a while) and it was great. It might seem petty but I'm leaning toward cancelling my preorder. Horizon comes out the same week anyway no sense in getting them both.

Wasn't the Gamepad pretty useful in Wind Waker HD? I'm not sure about Twilight Princess.

$399 for Switch + $79.99 for Zelda + tax

not to mention a pro controller...

Not sure if you have heard the pro controller doesn't exist in North America it seems you just saved $70... J/K... but seriously where the hell is this thing no one has it to order in North America.

It definitely was, though that was more because it mitigated the terrible item-swapping mechanics in Wind Waker, rather than the result of the gamepad being a good controller

Your exchange rate is pretty bad right now, so that's equivalent to about 380USD including tax (I tacked on 20CAD for that). That's not exorbitant compared to American prices.

Yep, the console is $400 and the games are $80.
Then you add the 15% tax which gives $552.

4 years ago we had parity with USD and paid the same price but that changed with the oil crash.

I suppose that the actual salaries of Canadians don't rise immediately to compensate for a currency crash, huh? That really does stink :(

I'm trying to remember what it all did, I know it made switching items around a lot easier, plus it has the gyro aiming which I love.

I always enjoy game pad features so it's a bummer to see that they scrapped them for this game for no good reason.

The worst part was at E3 2016 the tablet was being used as a map. So they actually removed something they programmed into the game.

Theres no reason to not put a map, or have it be used to swap weapons/items around like they did in Twilight Princess or Wind Waker.

Considering how items break, and all the food you cook in this game... It seems like a complete waste to not use it.

I'm considering it. As long as the game is playable I don't care if it look worse and the frame rate isn't as stable. Switch at launch doesn't excite me much.

But in reality this Zelda game doesn't excite me that much.

That's right. I played it but mostly forgot what I did with the Gamepad, but gyro aiming was actually really useful. Ah well, it's not like Nintendo hasn't given short shrift to the Gamepad's utility almost from the beginning.

Sounds to me like they removed it just to not have an advantage over the Switch version.

I might if emulators are near 100%. Would be far the best way to play Zelda. Native 1080p, max AF/AA 60 fps

Sure, now GAF loves the Wii U...

I'll probably get it on both systems just for collector's purposes. I have a pretty robust Wii U collection already and it'd be nice to add Zelda to that.

Was it at E3 2016? I thought I remembered people saying there was absolutely no gamepad stuff in floor demos. They did show it off at the Game Awards 2014 (I posted a gif earlier in the thread, lemme find the post), and that really pisses me off if they removed it. Item management has always kinda sucked in 3D Zeldas and we put up with because the games were so damn good anyways. The gamepad helped IMO, and I liked the map when sailing in WWHD.

Sounds to me like they removed it just to not have an advantage over the Switch version.

Yeah, if they actually did this it really steams... my... bananas, or whatever it is people say nowadays. I still really want to play it though, I'm just not buying a Switch for it. I guess Nintendo's still got a little hold over me, despite me not loving them recently (recently means last 10 years).

edit: here's that post
Yeah, but I hope you can still do stuff like this on Wii U like when they showed it off in 2014 at the Game Awards. (this is Nintendo's youtube channel) I don't buy that he was actually playing the game, but still... they showed this stuff

Although I'm pretty sure I remember people saying that there was absolutely no gamepad stuff last E3. If they took out gamepad stuff from the Wii U version just because Switch wouldn't be able to use it, that would kinda piss me off.
about a minute in on the video.

Hasn't GAF always loved the Wii U though? I mean I think the great exclusive library has been represented here, I'm sure. It's just that it's so much fun to make fun of it sometimes

After finding out the Canadian pricing for the Switch ($399.99), I'll have to get Zelda for the Wii U. I'm excited for the Switch, but I can't justify buying a system for that price at launch when the only game I'm itching to play is also available for a system I already own. That Mario Odyssey though.

I was in day one mode before the press conference - now I'm on the fence.

Will probably go with the Wii U version and postpone my switch purchase until Mario shows up - hopefully with a bundle/better deal.

The game will probably look good on both consoles, so that doesn't bother me too much. To me, it might actually come down to how comfortable it feels to play a game like zelda with split joycon. I loved using the wiimote + nunchuck setup, and the irresponsible part of me is almost ready to splurge the cash to get the same kind of experience with Breath of the Wild.

How does preordering change anything? You have the same money yesterday or tomorrow.

Pre-orders (through Amazon.ca, for example) provide a 20% discount, and lock in the price. If the Canadian dollar fluctuates (which it can and does, especially over the course of >6 months) you will still be locked in to lower, original price. If the price goes down, you will receive the new, lower price.

For example, I pre-ordered BotW during E3 of 2015 through Amazon.ca, and at the time the price of games in Canada was at par with the MSRP of games in the U.S. I pre-ordered, and received around 30% off of the $59.99 MSRP. Since then, the Canadian dollar has weakened, and the MSRP is now $69.99 in Canada. Because I pre-ordered when I did, I am still guaranteed the price of 30% off of $59.99. I can also cancel my pre-order at anytime before it is shipped, and I am only charged for my item once it has shipped.

There are virtually no downsides for Canadians pre-ordering a game through Amazon.ca as other than the possibility of me getting it slightly after the release date, which is more of a shipping issue.

I have a Switch pre-ordered from Target, but the more I think about it literally the only thing I want to play on it anywhere near the launch window is Zelda. And I'll bet the Wii U version will be every bit as good as the Switch version. And I have a Wii U already.

So I may end up canceling the Switch pre-order and just go with the Wii U version. Why pay $360 to play when I could pay $60 for the same experience?

No, but only because it's coming out for the Switch first (or the same time?), and being able to take it with me to play on lunch breaks at work is too good.

Definitely getting on Wii U. The trailer at the Switch reveal gives me chills. Must play, no reason to buy a new system that already looks to be in trouble just to play it.
