Horizon Zero Dawn - Preview Thread [Up: All Previews Live]

I have been looking forward to this game since it was announced, nothing would please me more than if it were amazing but from I've seen today I'm not sure it will be, I'm definitely less hyped for it now, I guess we'll see, but I think it's stupid to just assume anyone who doesn't think it looks like the best game ever made are some sort of hater. Some people get way too invested in games before they release, it's No Man's Sky all over again.

Out of curiosity, are your concerns centered around story/cutscene animation or is something with the gameplay bothering you as well?

I certainly don't think all the side-quest animation and voice work looks and sounds good but largely, it's on par with other open world titles as a whole.

Even then it make no sense .
Ubi does a lot of games with different gameplay even if they all open world .
Plus almost all open world games have certain things that are the same .

They do, but having played Far Cry Primal, I definitely get some vibes when watching videos of this game. That's mostly not a bad thing for me personally though, since I loved Primal.

Sure that is fair. Differently people look for different things in games. In my case, I am just looking for a solid action rpg in a visually impressive world, with an interesting premise and varied combat. So far it looks like it is meeting that criteria.

Thanks for the response. Indeed, the gameplay seems pretty varied and deep so far, and I hope that and the difficulty of the dinobots are what carry the game, along with the beautiful world.

Second question: I may have missed it, but what did you think of the towns/encampments you encountered?

I only encountered one and totally rushed through it. Doing this gave me enough time to get to two of the best fights I found in the game. From my cursory blowthrough, I noticed - merchants, quest-givers, and tons of people willing to offer idle banter.

Ugh. Fuck this stuff in games.

Does anyone ever like open world games that have quests with a timer attached. This is already making me dread what this game is going to turn out to be. Let's hope it has an interesting story and characters.

I'm with you, but I liked the ones I encountered, because they aimed my focus and attention on alternate battle tactics in Horizon that I haven't used much in other adventure games. Again, herd-management is big here. That's what the timer-based levels helped me appreciate in particular.

I was discouraged from taking on side quests but did so anyway, and I liked the many traversal paths I could take from point to point, and the way battles organically unfolded on open, wild prairies. So, I'd say "open world" is legit.

I'm not sure what you mean with this. I'm talking about level design similar to WoW, TW3 and obviously Skyrim where if you want to go from the east side of the map all the way to the west, there's typically nothing stopping you. I haven't seen what you've had access too, but so far the videos make it look more like a wider, almost Mass Effect 2-3 design. Neither of which was open world. Are you saying you can travel the map in such a way, and that they've just been showing everything being a type of locked path just to display the graphics? Being able to freely travel north and south through a very wide corridor isn't open world to me.

Then again, a lot of people want to call Dark Souls open world, when that's not either. It's just large, interconnected levels. Unless of course we're retconning even more defiinitons now and Super Metroid is an open world.

When can we expect the reviews to come out for the game? Release day or perhaps earlier?

Also, does the PS4 Pro offer anything to the game other than 4K support if you don't have a 4K TV?

They seem to frequently do this especially in reviews, its ridiculous thanks for the warning sorry you got spoiled.

I'd sort of guessed it before hand but I'd like to have been surprised to find out I was right. There was absolutely no reason to spoil what they did. Frigin' idiots.

Visuals are astounding. Some of the effects are a bit disappointing, though - explosions/smoke dissipate so quickly it's jarring.

I mean, this is exactly the kind of limited preview event that leaves us unable to TRULY test the game's boundaries, the way you describe. At least in my experience, I never ran into an invisible wall or a "can't fight this enemy yet" barrier. I had a ton of land to roam on foot or on horseback and could just go and go if I wanted. (I was also happy to see a fast-travel system in play, which requires crafting fast-travel "kits" so that you don't spam the feature. It lets you warp to major settlements and other specific landmarks that you've already discovered.)

Really digging Aloy's outfit in that video. Also seems they have a walk cycle that indicates that she has low health. Hope there's a light HUD mode.

I've read someone saying that you can turn on/off stuff in the UI without having to go to the menus. Can't find it.

Man I thought this thread was going to shit the bed early on. But these previews have been great.

My biggest concern was tthe side quests and the world . They seem to have depth to them and there's a ton to do. Given the graphics and GGs first adventure into an open world game. I couldn't be happier with how this game is shaping up.

I like how foliage looks in general, except for that "bended" grass. I really don't like the look of it and the animation is junky, i don't understand what they were going for.

Looks like the menu runs at 60fps, which is a really nice touch especially since it seems crafting and managing stuff is going to be done pretty often.
Actually i hope this doesn't mean that the menu runs at uncapped frame rate like MGSV, otherwise our PS4 will start sounding like jets again.

You know what I will approach this like Dragon's Dogma that is combat/gameplay are the draw here and other things just have to be decent enough to carry the game along.
why do you keep doing this to yourselves?
Why do you keep acting like you care? ;)

It happens. Go into a Zelda thread and I dare you to say anything less than positive. Fact of the matter is neither of these games shown anything close to a No Man's Sky situation; a plethora of information and footage has been released.

How would that work, a button toggle? If so, it would have to be something that you aren't going to frequently have your fingers next to like maybe just clicking the touchpad, and that would be for turning the entire HUD on and off. To selectively toggle specific options, you'd have to go into a menu.

The PS blog got some cool details
The Embrace is a lush, sizable valley in which you’ll spend the opening hours of the game as you train for, and take part in, the Nora tribe’s Proving ritual. But it’s just one smaller pocket of a multi-region world map. The demo’s second location, set immediately east of the Embrace and unlocked after a specific story beat, is considerably larger.
Don’t take any creature, great or small, for granted. You can be quickly kicked to death by spooked herds, and even a Watcher’s single tail swipe can half your health. Harder difficulties will increase that damage, as well as removing aim assists, and you’ll find resources are scarcer.

Alright, watched gameplay for a couple of hours, super hyped, and I am going to end it there for now. Looking so forward to getting this game on the 28th!

Yea... I'll be disabling all those HUD elements (or off out of combat mode). I've done the same with my current Deus Ex: Mankind Divided playthrough and it's fantastic just going through Prague with not a HUD element in sight.
