Horizon Zero Dawn - Preview Thread [Up: All Previews Live]

Look at the top view of the map as they move it around. It's really just a bunch of corridors, with a few paths leading up the side of a mountain. That's just the beginning area, but I wouldn't be surprised if this is how the entire world is laid out for the most part.

You seem to be really convinced that the game isn't really open world despite the devs saying so, previews indicating that it seems to be the case as well. What makes you think you are being lied to? (serious question)

To me the game looks to be as open world as the Witcher 3 is.

Has anyone else noticed that GG have increased the folliage draw distance and decreased the pop-in we once saw in the reveal?

I also like that fast travel isn't unlimited, I forget which preview it is, but you have to collect resources or something to fast travel, believe it's the PS Access 7 things you need to know about Horizon: Zero Dawn video.

Well it looks like it starts in an area with mountains and valleys...so valleys are now corridors? I get what you are saying, but it does seem to be a game with a lot of topography. It is open world in that it is a massive interconnected world that you can seemless go from one end to the other. Is it a bad thing that it has a lot of topography and there are unscalable areas? Not really in my opinion. In addition, the canyon area seems to have pretty wide open spaces from what we have seen. If anything, I much prefer the world to have a varity of topography rather than just wide open spaces and undulating hills.

I think you are missing the point. He is not saying that the topology of the game is a problem, but rather that having a bunch of valley like environments allows for you to easily cull out a lot of geometry, thus allowing for more detail in what is seen by the player. Not a bad thing, just not necessarily fair to compare this to a more traditional open world game graphically.

Game sure looks pretty though.

Seeing all the different ethnicities in the game, I kinda wish now that Aloy was a black woman. We could sure use more in our games.

For a game that tries to appeal as many people as it can, that really got my attention. I rarely do fast travel so, it doesn't affect me in any positive or negative way.

Any news on fighting human beings?

There's some footage of it in the PS Access preview, there are other tribes you fight. I found it a bit unsettling, the way she just nonchalantly takes out people with her bow. Maybe it's the lack of context, but it just felt like "Robot, human, I say kill 'em all!"

The preview footage didn't really change my view. A lot of content but not necessarily much depth. The bow-heavy combat doesn't look fun to me, and the story seems like your typical ham-fisted western AAA game. Great-looking world though. Seemed like some framerate issues here and there though.

Still don't get the hype for this game, it looks really pretty but nothing about the gameplay seems that fun and like the many previews for mgs5 I'm always concerned when people fast forward through footage of large chunks of "gameplay" to highlight sections that look fairly boring.

And while it may only be a handful of bad va getting highlighted in a game with tons of good va, this isn't typical weeb "boo boo the engish dub sucks" va complaining that va is laughably 90's tier bad and it's inexcusable for a big budget AAA game to let something that bad to be shown at a preview event 2 months away from release.

The game that will make me buy a PS4 (finally)...but still can't till later. To me, it's this generation's "Gears" as in the new IP that will start the era of new good games coming out. My body is ready.

"you can't compare this game graphically to other open world RPGs.......cos the mountains are in the way"

Wow!

Much of what is possible today in terms of graphics is because we do not render everything in the world all at once, regardless of the player's perspective. To take this into consideration when comparing graphics is not stupid, but reasonable.

I hear you, I got that vibe a bit as well but reading the previews makes it seem that the combat loop is a blast which is what matters most for me. I do hope there are enough towns, its my favorite part about RPGs

"I don't understand why people like what I don't like"

What a conundrum.

No I understand that. I was also disputing the idea ( I won't say claim yet) that the game was a series of valleys. For instance, check the Story trailer or some of the earlier trailer. There are larger scale valleys there. Still, I don't see why the game would need to be structured like the Witcher 3 (And Skellige, which was more mountainous had more mountain and valley like structure) to qualify as 'expansive'. Anyway, Witcher 3 has quite an advanced geometry culling implimentation, so I am not sure why this would be any different. What is impressive here though is the draw and LoD.

Eh... this looks fucking insane. Like seriously, I've never seen anything like this before.

That tall grass stuff is crazy.

I guess. I mean most people will be playing for the VA anyways so you're right. Most people watch these videos for a good grasp on VA too, not gameplay.

Well can't be helped, valleys are freaking fantastic, I've been in Torres del Paine in Chile and can't get enough of it. Bring all the valleys.

The combat look like a lot of fun and the world \story looks interesting .
Fighting robo dinosaurs both huge and small or mounting them is great .
Plus like you said really good gfx for a open world game also helps .

Yeah its annoying when I read the previews the game sounds sweet, but then I watch gameplay and I lose interest. Maybe its one of those games you have to play to get sucked in.

"I don't understand why people like what I don't like"

What a conundrum.

I mean I can normally get why people are excited for something even if it personally isn't my cup of tea, but from the first time they showed Horizon outside of the graphics it looked like a mad max ps4/xb1 fun rental but not anything to get hyped to the moon about. I felt similarly about order 1886, I'm sure Horizon like Order will be a fun enough game but it looks like a fun 6-7/10 not a goty contender.

I generally agree but we've seen tons of AAA games pushing some lack luster VA and cut scenes a few months before release. You can't really show off a Bethesda RPG without showing off the mannequin dead eyed NPC's that just stand there in front of the player character. Its not exactly unheard or rare.

I also became pretty acquainted with the plot and dialogue, though that multi-chapter skip didn't help me track exactly what was going on. The writing and voice acting both seem remarkably solid, and my preview session set me up to believe that there's quite a bit of rich lore for Guerrilla to work with here, particularly in having the main characters explore issues such as societal castes, traditions versus compassion, and bonds of blood surviving over others. Yet the game's world is clearly built upon some other deep mysteries, which I won't spoil here, even though you only need to play the game for about 15 minutes to have some of those mysteries wallop you over the head. Still, I'm eager to see just how this apparent multi-world stuff ultimately plays out.

Do you like concepts? Because the concept was what excited people at first and when the game was revealed it looked stunning in a way no one expected. But the sci fi concept mixed with tribal things is enough to grab people's attention. Starting with that, things just got better for some with combat looking really smooth, impactful, responsive and strategic in a way that other games of similar genre don't. And now we have a proper introduction of rpg mechanics like questing, wandering, crafting and engaging enemies in different ways. Is not that everything is perfect but most people here already have an idea about the strenghts and weaknesses of the game, they just needed more information.

Now, if "ideas" don't get your attention and you need inmediate feedback, well, you probably don't get the hype of many new ips.

I noticed when the health bar reduces there's a blue indicator as if you'll be able to regain your health some way. I can't see any other reason for it. Perhaps if you counter immediately?
