Horizon Zero Dawn - Preview Thread [Up: All Previews Live]

Looks great but as others have said, facial animation and lip sync looks pretty ropey. The voice work is fine, but I don't think it's going to stack up to something like The Witcher 3 - though it has other strengths of course.

I'd also agree with others who say the UI is a bit much. Hopefully we can customise it.

Looks visually stunning, although I'm a bit worried about performance on the PS4 regular. Hopefully they can iron that out. I'm a little more worried about the Ubisoftness of the open world layout, with a bunch of icons all over the place. I guess that's to be expected, but I was hoping there would be a little more discoverability. And IGN at least wasn't enamored with the story, but that's ok

OTOH, combat looks fun and very varied, and tackling all the different creatures in different ways looks interesting. I'm a bit worried that it'll be one of those games where I go in and fuck around for a bit but never make progress. I'll be waiting for full reviews but I'll probably be picking it up (not immediately though, Persona 5 and Zelda take priority)

Game looks stunning, can't freaking wait. It really looks like Guerrilla has a winner with this game.

If I had to nit-pick:

Combat against humans looks rather uninspired...

Detective mode, track enemies through walls, ambush them from bushes. Basically every third-person action game released these last several years.

Hoping that you can get some new tools and skills to make those encounters interesting, but man, watching Greg Miller's play-through just made me realize how bored I am of doing the same shit in every third person action game.

Fighting those giant ass robots looks awesome, though.

There was an episode of frame trap a few months back where they talked about all the upcoming rpgs and they all seemed pretty lukewarm about it, although maybe I'm misremembering and need to rewatch. Also during the Switch presentation they randomly brought it up out of nowhere as looking inferior to some of the games that were shown. Wheather or not that's true is subjective, but to just bring it up out of nowhere to discredit it was pretty weird, at least to me. Also if you go back and watch Huber talk about it after it was revealed for the first time they all seemed stoked for it, I haven't gotten that impression from them since
That's not the impression I get. Most of them think it will be a good - if not great - game but are keeping their hype in check.

Yea, I get the same impression as fastmower. They are just trying to keep their hype at reasonable levels.

I'm avoiding watching videos just so I don't overdo my exposure to the game pre release but I'm happy the impressions seem to be very positive.

I did watch some video of a quest walk through and I will admit the lip syncing is not good but it's better than Deus Ex was so it's manageable. I thought the facial expressions were good otherwise. The voice work seemed fine in the one I watched.

I think the game is gonna review great but stuff like this will bring down reviews a bit.

Only 4 more weeks guys!

Hmm...So I'm wondering about the combat, seems like the three skill trees are standard RPG types with a more action-based focus

- Play Aloy like a Warrior/Brute type

- Play Aloy like a Ranged Hunter/Rouge

- Play Aloy like a Mage/Healer type

Can anyone thats played it confirm?

Watched the PS Access video. Still not really seeing what's so special. I've felt that way for a while. If it reviews great and a lot of people say it's great I'll probably get it though.

Ian said it would be Garbo,Ben checked out,Brad is so-so I don't remember Huber,Jones is the only one really hyped
^that

As for Huber I get the impression that he's optimistic. I think he genuinely wants to love it, but isn't sure he will. During his PSX syndrome episode he interviewed some people who had played it and I remember him saying they were starting to sell him on it

I doubt the melee options are any near as deep as the Souls. Melee weapons in this game are going to be like arrows in Souls.

That is a good way of looking at it .
From what we see in the previews the range weapons are the stars of the show.
Along with traps so melee would most likely play a smaller part .

Which is pretty funny to me.

"Meh, what's so special?"

"Hey, it is special"

"Oh, it is special!"

I don't get it.

Let's be honest here, folks, regardless of what I think about the dialogue a page or so back, this game looks like it's going to be absolutely fantastic.

I'm going to do something I never do:

92 Metacritic.

Loving everything about this gave so far but don't like the UI style. It appears to be medieval fantasy based instead of plain futuristic minimalistic kind

I'd love a HUD option that only pops up certain elements while using the ear piece/visor tech.

Would be the best of both worlds for HUD-less immersion while having relevant info easily accessible.

Looks graphically great, but in one of the previews I watched (IGN?), there was very little interaction with water. Aloy rides this horse thing through a river and there is nothing but a cheap "splash" animation. No water displacement/ripples etc. Took me out of the world briefly. Cant unsee.
Far Cry/Tomb Raider gameplay is fine for me.

Game looks pretty good. Id be really curious about playing it dubbed in another language. Perhaps German. The Cadence of the writing is more suited to an English VA then an American one for alloy.

Its a tiny nitpic but one that will bother me to no end.

Edit: after a quick google the French version is sounding really good

Well, from the amount of him I've seen on Easy Allies, he seems to dislike and be unusually dismissive any AAA game that's not a Souls game, so that's not too surprising.
