Horizon Zero Dawn - Preview Thread [Up: All Previews Live]

VA honestly isn't too bad besides a few people, from the previews I've seen anyway. I guess what's mostly jarring is VA isn't generally an issue at all for Sony games, its the last thing I would think is an issue. Besides QD games, and Sly.

DA:I reference where the Hinterlands had like a million and one things to do and even having to go back a couple times, rest of the maps only had a few scattered things to do.

Oh yes...I also found the world itself in DA:I just didnt seem cohesive or have much character...The world in this one looks more intriguing, at least aesthetically.

Well most other Sony games don't do stuff like this .
So like you said QD is only game they have like that .

It looks really, really good. I'm not a RPG guy myself (Never played Skyrim, the newer Fallouts and couldn't play past even the first 20% of TW3 that I bought at launch), but the world and the gameplay videos are getting my attention.

I was thinking about waiting some time to get this, but I might buy it soon after launch.

Edit: On a side note, why some of you guys spend so much energy trying to dispute other's opinions?

Like, if you watched the footage and didn't like anything, there's no need to hype check other posters.

If you think the game looks amazing, it's not required to act like a marketing boy and attack anyone that say lukewarm or even negative things about it.

Personally, if someone isn't posting something that's factually wrong or isn't open to being convinced of something, I don't see any gains in confronting them.

Fuck, this, Zelda and Mass Effect within a couple of weeks.

I can only imagine the fume if this gets a higher metascore than Breath of the Wild.

Start at the 4 min mark. VA is good and writing is completely fine. Watch the whole vid if you wanna know how it places, it's pretty good (the vid that is)
Just seems pretty standard and underwhelming to me. That's likely a very small side quest anyways so I don't want to make too big a deal of it, but it isn't exactly raising my confidence given the studio's writing pedigree.

In a post-Witcher and Uncharted world I just expect more out of gaming. Stuff like Rise of the Tomb Raider doesn't even cut it for me and that was better than this. I can still enjoy the game (like I did with Tomb Raider) but my expectations couldn't be much lower for HZD when it comes to VA and writing.

Ashly Butch has done some really good work so the direction just seems to be off for Alloy based on what I've seen today. The tone of her responses don't seem to connect with what the other person is saying or doing.

Yeah the VA for the sister is decent. Like I said before, most on here are fixated on one scene and are completely ignoring the other scenes that are actually decent-good.

In a 25 hour open world RPG no one is going to be fixated on that stuff. People will be too busy playing the game.

I mean the VA does sound standard and it odd that you bring up Witcher 3 when the VA was nothing to write home about either, it was the writing that was airtight.

I could be wrong, but you seem to have you mind made up about Guerilla and their writing and VA which might be affecting how you are taking in the dialogue. I had the same trepidations as you and after watching the walk through and imagining what I would think of it was another dev and I came away impressed.

The tone of this scene is all....wrong. Why is the music so relaxed and almost whimsical in a scene like this? And the voice acting sounds awful. x_x
What's extra weird to me is that this would be a side quest they'd want to show off at a preview event as if it's indicative of the variety of quests and/or shows some of the 'depth' of the game's writing. I hope it's an outlier.

The preview event was people getting to play the game for 4+ hours. Not a manicured vertical slice of gameplay.

It's likely a version very close to gold anyway.

I think I'll turn off the hud.

Have GG said anything about difficulty settings?

I'm all in for the "make every animal a robot".
Easter egg Robo Sharktopus. :D

There's apparently a "very hard" setting. So it will probably be about normal difficulty from the PS2 era.

I'm just glad the main meat of criticism are on cutscenes and stuff and not the stuff I actually have to play honestly. I can look past some wonky cutscenes, I can't look past bad gameplay

Same. There's not a single game that I've purchased for the cutscenes either.

I think is kinda unfair to compare any RPG to the Likes of Uncharted or even Tomb Raider.

Those games have a linear story that's told the same way every time. I'm sure the amount of dialogue written is at least half of a game like Horizon or Witcher.

And about Witcher, the game seems to be much better than Horizon on this point. But while I'm not excusing Guerrila, we have to remember that CDPR has a lot of experience in doing RPGs

Eh I love the design of the robots and their animations, but I don't think this game is for me even though I was hoping it would be. Footage I've seen reminds me a lot of Far Cry/Mordor and other games of that ilk which do absolutely nothing for me. The only recent open world games I've really liked are The Witcher 3 & Dragon's Dogma though so I guess it's not too surprising. Will probably try this down the line when there's a sale if GAF impressions are good.

Say it.

Which is funny considering the "lol, GG" comments prior to and how people were worried about GG delivering on gameplay and what not. The fact that the bulk of criticism is on cutscenes bodes well for sure.

I found cutscenes with dialogue to be atrocious in Witcher 3 on PS4. Shit looked like Bioware.

So, I don't know, those cutscenes aren't really ruining it for me.

I didn't think that (Brom) scene was particularly bad anyway. Its a side-quest in an open world game; not a pivotal plot-driving sequence, so expecting the direction to be as intricate as say one of Naughty Dog's impeccably shot and edited cinematics is plain unreasonable.

That, in conjunction with the subject matter just makes it a soft target for people wanting to take cheap-shots.

There's a very hard mode which means at the least pretty much all machines kill Aloy in 2 hits.

As an aside, I think the gear system doesn't really look that interesting. Especially when Dark Souls had it figured out how to make Gear interesting using stats alone.

That's true. But it doesn't hurt to have a decent story and cast of characters.

Yeah, having watched all the previews so far, I have to admit, I think I was being a tad harsh. Perhaps I was thrown out by the slightly wooden facial animations. I don't really care any more though, I've seen enough to know I'm going to love exploring this world.

Yeah I understand what you're saying. I'm just astonished by the world, and the gameplay seems incredible.

Yeah the writing is acceptable in that 'infamous' scene. As for RotTR, I think Horizon has done a better job with their VA's as far I can tell.

Disagree about TW3. I think there are performances in that game that are some of the best this gen (Geralt, Olgierd, Vlodimir, Baron, Gaunter, Regis, others). Maybe I'm wrong but I expect TW3 to be much bigger than HZD and then I'd expect the latter to be a much tighter writing and VA experience.

From what I've seen today coupled with 4 other games I've played of theirs I just can't get excited or expect much out of the way they write or direct performances. I would love nothing more than to be wrong since I'm already buying this game and am looking forward to it.

Wow, Sony's going all in on their shared universe.

Edit: Regarding the Brom stuff, I think a bit of it is overblown. It happens so often with open-world games that I typically just ignore it and go about my way because of the scope/density of the games. Deus Ex: MD has plenty of that but I'd never mark it down there, so doubt I would here either personally.

Will check that out. If it isn't frustrating, then it'll be my first playthrough.
I seen is a vid of someone playing it on very hard.

Don't take any creature, great or small, for granted. You can be quickly kicked to death by spooked herds, and even a Watcher's single tail swipe can half your health. Harder difficulties will increase that damage, as well as removing aim assists, and you'll find resources are scarcer

Here's a promising quote from Polygon's preview. For those who didn't catch it.

And Guerrilla seems to have nailed the type of gameplay that will draw in fans of Far Cry, The Witcher, The Elder Scrolls and Watch Dogs on its first stab at the genre.

Seems like something many RPG fans should be excited about.

Sorry, 17 pages.

Can anyone just give me a quick response of generally how the outlets are responding to the game?

I only watched Kinda Funny and they liked it. Is everyone else generally positive?

Everyone is pretty positive on it, especially in regards to the gameplay and world.
