I feel a bit uncomfortable about the appropriation of Native American concepts in this game. I just watched the quest video and they use "braves" to describe fellow warriors, and there was a costume in the UI referring to "shamans". I mean at least they could do is make up some new words if they're just going to rip off a culture whole cloth like that. At least they changed headdresses to be ribbons instead of feathers.

Perhaps because they're a Dutch developer they're a bit unaware of this issue of appropriation in America, but it doesn't excuse it.

DLC with Sinterklaas and zwarte piet skins for $10

Ashly Burch is voicing Aloy. She's blown up considerably over the last few years. I still remember watching the Hey Ash videos when they were brand new.

Ashley Burch is the voice behind the main character (Of Hey Ash whatcha playin? and Tiny Tina in Borderlands).

edit seems I'm doubly late on this one lol.
Oh wow, didn't know she was the one from those Hey Ash videos. They were great. Also holy shit at her voicing Tiny Tina. That's one of my favorite game characters.

I'm not gonna lie i'm genuinely uncomfortable with how much of a poor depiction this is when it comes to people with mental illness. It just gets so many things wrong and then the player literally has the option to tell someone who's mentally ill to kill himself. :| I'm liking a lot of what i'm hearing and seeing about this game today but this is some straight up "wtf were they thinking" tier shit writing.

Agreed GG should be embarrassed.

I think the one thing some aren't really paying attention to with Horizon are the preview's praise of the gameplay particularly the combat engine. In my honest opinion, that's the main differentiating factor in Horizon, especially coming from a western developer where I've always felt Japanese developers excelled in this department.

The combat loop is just truly satisfying, I think if you nail that, you are already 80% there with a great game. And man, some of this stuff just looks really satisfying to play, and the fact that dungeons with even tougher enemies and puzzles are in ala Zelda, just makes me feel GG really figured out what's missing from other RPG games, and that's truly satisfying combat. For me, a great story is just icing on the cake, but it seems Horizon may deliver on that front to.

Really is just a bad time IMO for Switch to launch, I'm not even gonna buy it now, there's just too many games to get to. Good problem to have I guess lol

Back when it was first announced they were asked what were the game inspirations for Horizon. They listed Monster Hunter, Binary Domain, and Dragon's Dogma. So, that was already a good sign. It didn't necessarily mean that they'd nail it, but choosing three games known for stellar gameplay loops as an inspiration for a new IP is a good jumping off point.

I was just thinking from the Easy Allies video that the chatter sounds like it's going to end up being Dragon's Dogma levels of annoying. Not sure that's something to be inspired by.

He likes the facial animations.....hmmm

Everything I've seen apart from the schizophrenic guys quest actually has really good facial animations. That quest looks like it has a bug with the womans mouth. Either that or their facially capturing the actress and that's how her mouth moves, which is one of those things where being too close to reality makes something less realistic.

Haven't read the previews yet, but for those that have, what are some negatives that are popping up?

So far only that it's almost too good.

Can't think of anything negative that I've seen other than Brandon Jones saying that Aloy talks a lot.

Let get real and accept side quest cutscenes are not looking like ''the standard for open world RPG'', cheesy writing, stupid body and face animations and bad to mediocre voice acting is looking like the worst in years in the AAA space.
As long as they keep the important (main story) stuff with OK quality is not a dealbreaker to mesince (almost) everything else is looking gorgeous. (didn't like the cheap feel of the inventory screen)

I'm SOLD in the combat aspect, this is exactly what i wanted back in 2014 when the concept art leaked

Hah. You stole my idea. I actually had a slightly longer version of that, with more lasers, but the compression is just bad looking.

Jesus..

Like my article says, Aloy can't freely climb on whatever walls she sees.
Read the article right after posting that, thanks for the great write-up! Hopefully we will still be able to climb every mountain in sight and it'll offer more freedom than FFXV's walled vistas.

I haven't kept up on all the footage, but the animations in side quest cutscenes are embarrassing for a 2017 AAA open world title. I would assume they aren't like that in the main scenario. They were completely taking away from the plot happening on screen.

I have said it before and I'll say it again, facial animations in Horizon are better than any other open world RPG with dialogue options.

If there's anything better, please link it.

It's pretty easy to see why Jones said that watching the video. All the animations in the preview looked really good.

It's clear that for some, that one side-quest has negatively colored the perception of the entire game.
