Sony X800D well - reviewed, 4k+HDR TV with low input lag

I'm considering buying a new TV sometime in the next few months. However, at the moment I don't have any 4K consoles or 4K movies. I might buy a PS4 Pro at some point, but I'm not sure yet. At the moment, I play exclusively on an OG PS4. No PC or anything.
Two questions:

1) How do standard 1080p games on an OG PS4 look on a 4K TV? Are there any noticeable benefits compared to running them on a 1080p? Is there a chance they might actually look worse, e.g. blurrier?

2) Is the X800D recommendation still up-to-date? I don't buy new hardware very often, so I usually buy things that are future-proof (to a degree) and keep them a long time. I'm considering getting the X800D either in 49" or 55". The 55" model is ~€1000 on amazon.de, which happens to be the maximum amount I'm willing to spend.

I can only speak for the 43" VA panel but 1080p games look amazing on it, better than any 1080p TV I have seen (ymmv, I have never played games on an OLED). The colours are beautiful and Sony's upscaling tech is really good, even 720p games look just fine.

1) Depends on how the set handles it. I can only speak for this one and 1080p still looks great. This Sony also offers pixel-perfect scaling if you so desire, so basically one pixel from a 1920x1080 image is mapped to four on the display. Can't get any sharper than that for non-native content. I even played (360 BC) and watched some 720p content and it looked good enough.

2) Look out for deals, Sony already presented the 2017 model which I think is due later this year (iirc the X800D was released Summer/Fall 2016 so probably same time this year). The 55" has been sold for waaaay cheaper multiple times last year. Don't pay the amazon price.

Picked up the 43 inch one last night to go with my pro been saving ratchet and clank for this moment. Looks damn good with everything set up right. Can't wait for horizon it's gonna be a looker. I also have a lot of pro games to still play due to not having a 4K set before. This year is gonna be a good year to have this tv too so many games.

Glad you're enjoying it. I just got one a few days ago too, although I got the 49 inch. I know the 49 has a different screen, but my last tv was a 43 inch and I wanted one a little bigger. Also, after seeing it running in store, I was very happy with how it looked. I was considering getting the KS8000 too, but I didnt think there was a huge difference when looking at both TV's running. KS8000 had a bit more pop to it, but I think both look fantastic.

I felt more comfortable buying the Sony though due to the cheaper price and also I was worried about the build quality of the KS8000. I know others have had issues and I didnt want to deal with that headache. Also, I liked the center stand on the Sony instead of the wide feet of the Samsung, I hate those.

After setting it up my X800D and messing with the picture a bit, I think it looks way better than it did in store. I've had a Pro since launch, and finally getting to play some of these games in 4K with HDR is amazing. FFXV in particular was really stunning with HDR on. Very pleased with my purchase and, like you, I can't wait for to play Horizon on it.

I watched some HDR content via netflix for the first time last night on this thing. Both the people in the room and myself said "whoa" out loud when it started. Looks soosooo different. Now I want to get a PS4 Pro. lol.

Hibana I think? Didn't read a word of dialogue as we were just looking for differences in visuals. We also watched that French Chef show. Both looked great--when the sun shown in the latter I was surprised that I had to look away. Pretty cool.

Thanks for your impressions! Mine set is on it's way and I am extremely excited! Can't wait to blind myself

Chef's Table looked so unbelievably good. I really was in awe, all the wonderful lifelike colors and lightning. Probably my fav HDR show on Netflix so far, it's incredibly enjoyable to watch for all audiences too.
I think there is a new season upcoming, I hope it shares the same quality standard and mastering level.

Hibana looks great too but couldn't stand subtitles only.

Thank you.

@Quality
Sounds great. I would actually be fine with the image looking exactly like on a 1080p display. I was just worried that it might potentially look worse for some reason. But after doing some research, it seems this can only happen if the upscaling ratio is a non-integer, which isn't the case here (1080p x 4 = 4K).

@Price
Good to know, thanks for the tip. I've set up price drop notifications on multiple price tracking sites. I didn't plan to buy a new TV right away; I can wait a few months.

Not sure if I posted this but keep in mind amazon will give you a discounted price on hdtvs if you call and ask. It might vary rep to rep, but if you just say something along the lines of you've seen different prices but want to go with Amazon ultimately, they will absolutely give you a price reduction due to the competitive nature of hdtvs etc...

I looked it up and that's how I found out. And I was able to get 150 bucks off my Sony x800D with that knowledge. Not sure if that rep was just super happy that day, got laid the night before or what but yea he took 150 off my price.

So it's worth the call imho

Anyone who got the TV can comment on external HDDs being a problem ?
That's likely the only point preventing me from buying it currently.

Never had a problem with my older Samsung TVs before. There are some reviews on Amazon and elsewhere where the TV didn't even recognize the HDD at all.

Weird problem I am having with my 49X800D. Have Cable box on HDMI 1, PC on HDMI 2, PS4 Pro on HDMI 3, and Xbox One on HDMI 4. When I first got my PS4 PRO, it was on HDMI 2. I started getting white specs popping up all over the screen and then flickering to a black screen. Called PS4 support and said to switch HDMI ports and it worked fine when on 3. Switched the PC to port 2 at that time. Now I am getting no signal received when switching from my monitor to the TV. I plug the PS4 back into 2 and having the same issues as before. If I turn the TV off for awhile, it works with the PC and PS4. I switched cables and everything under the sun and still has this issue. I plug my Xbox one in, and that port works perfectly fine. Waiting for a call from Sony engineers tomorrow. Is it the TV or the PC/PS4? I did buy this unit open boxed from Best Buy. Maybe thats why it was returned.

I tried to watch a film I had on an external drive the other night and the video app that it forces into at first didn't show the drive, after I took it out and plugged it in again it displayed some photos that were on there but I couldn't see the folder where the film was. I didn't play around for long though and ended up watching it on another TV but it's definitely not as easy as a Samsung TV we have.

If I've got time tonight I'll have another look and see if I can get it to work.

Did anyone managed to get the HDR running on PC+RE7 combo with X800D? I head the game has some HDR issues on PC.

I only played for like 10 mins, just booted it up again, no issues.

The thing that does stand out though, if you turn HDR off, everything looks too white? So I looked at the brightness and it was in the middle (which I assume is default). I turned it all the way down to the left and it's much better, but the game probably needs another 2-3 levels of the brightness meter to get it darker.

I'm getting a bit of a weird annoyance with my XD80 49 inch. When I watch Netflix or use other apps, it doesn't happen but when using my PS4 it happens all the time.

I'll be busy playing a game or watching a Blu Ray and the input information in the black bar at the top of the screen will randomly appear, showing HDMI 2 and the resolution, etc. With no input from me. Sometimes the sound will actually cut out for 2-3 seconds as well.

Any ideas what could be causing it? It's very distracting when it happens and also inadvertently killed me during a Bloodborne boss fight when I couldn't see my HP anymore, which isn't exactly ideal.

yes im getting the exact same issue on my 43" XD8077
i was getting the banner appear whilst playing games quite a lot, but only realised a day or so ago that the audio would also cut out sometimes aswell (i normally use headphones)

happens on my ps4 pro while playing games.
i think i recall it happening on my xbox one aswell, which is on a seperate socket hdmi1. although i havent played it much since getting this new 4k tv.

if we're both getting this problem then its possibly a firmware issue?

maybe its our hdmi cables? not enough bandwidth for the 4k signal?
(im using the cable that came with the ps4 pro. ive just ordered an ibra pro gold from amazon uk to test if its really that issue)

Came into this thread to report the exact same thing. Here's my set-up:
- 49XD80
- PS4 Pro connected to HDMI 2
- Sony HT-XT3 receiver on HDMI 3/ARC

It's a relatively uncommon issue and only seems to happy a couple of times per day under quite heavy use, so I'm not sure if there's anything in particular that I'm doing that might cause this. The remotes for the TV and the receiver are on a table in front of me usually, so it's not that I'm sitting on them or something. I usually get it when I'm playing Final Fantasy XIV, which doesn't have 4K/HDR support.

I do have a couple of other devices connected, but they're usually turned off completely (i.e. not on standby) - a Mac Mini connected by HDMI that usually gets used as a server now and another PS4.

It didn't occur to me to try replacing the HDMI cable, so I guess I'll switch the cables around and see if that helps. (BTW, I saw this but I'm pretty sure I am using the cable that came with the Pro.)

I have no problems with a portable USB powered hard drive - it's actually a cheapo eBay enclosure with a spare laptop drive in it. The TV supports NTFS too.

It's definitely the right TV. I have it bookmarked at Richer Sounds; so gonna regularly check for price drops. I'd also be keen to know if it's still the best in this price range.

i thought id solved the issue by disabling the notification banner in the tv settings.

but i just played titanfall 2 on my ps4 pro, and the audio cutout for 2-3secs after only playing for about 15minutes.

i am still using the cable that came with the ps4 pro on hdmi 2.

anyone else had audio lag on this tv after its been on for a while? ( even in standby classifies as on.)

i get it all the time unless i restart the android os.

Yeah, me and few other posters had this issue a few months back. I wish I could remember the name of the poster that posted the fix but switching your Audio Output format over from Linear PCM to one of the Bitstream options will solve it.

Speaking of audio, apparently the audio quality of this TV is kinda subpar? Would you recommend getting a sound bar for it? (I don't have the room and the money for some kind of sophisticated 5.1 setup)

Obviously get a sound bar if you can't get a proper 5.1 setup. No question about it. I wouldn't say the audio is sub par, though- I thought it was quite good for an LCD. But still not nearly good enough. You're spending a lot of money to have a great picture, at least spend some on getting quality audio.

isnt bitstream for dolby surround stuff though?

will i still get audio through my tv if i switch to bitstream?
or do i have to switch to bitstream and then immediately switch back to linear pcm?

im referring to ps4 btw. im guessing you are aswell

I would recommend getting it home and deciding for yourself. I have a similiar model and the TV speakers are great for everyday use. I put on my surround sound when the situation calls for it.

I don't use the speakers, but they're alot better than you'd expect. I could easily use them if I didn't have my current sound setup

The speakers are fine and quite nice depending on use case.

1.) computer monitor - good
2.) personal gaming monitor - good
3.) home theatre - why even ask go get 7.1 with receiver ASAP

Yes, you will still still get audio out of your TV. There's Dolby Digital support so it won't negatively affect anything on the user end.

Just remember to leave the setting on "Bitstream (Dolby)" otherwise you'll run into the audio delay again. There won't be a need to switch back.

Finally got around to testing it and couldn't get it to work. It seemed to display films as I pulled the drive out but not when plugged in which isn't useful, took an age for anything to actually show up.

It's a Seagate external drive I'm using not sure what model just has backup plus on the back. I don't have any other drives to test so it looks like certain work and others don't.

How does this upscale 720p content? I ask because I want to be able to play my ps3 on it as well as BC games with a future Xbone.

Also I need a new receiver right because of HDCP right? I have a Onkyo TX-NR535 and it says it does 4K but this was before HDCP and HDR. Whats the cheapest Receiver that does all that?

Last question, but how have you guys been hauling off your older TV's and receivers? This ain't some old tube TV im using right now that I can throw to the side of the road.

I played some Gears with BC some time ago and it looked surprisingly good! Obviously jaggies and all but no blurriness, smearing or anything. DVD rips also look good enough imo. I'm very pleased with the upscaling of the TV in general.
Same model
Look again. XD85xx, the one in here is the XD80xx.
