Sony X800D well - reviewed, 4k+HDR TV with low input lag

I played some Gears with BC some time ago and it looked surprisingly good! Obviously jaggies and all but no blurriness, smearing or anything. DVD rips also look good enough imo. I'm very pleased with the upscaling of the TV in general.

Look again. XD85xx, the one in here is the XD80xx.
Still Same model

Still Same model

not exactly

the 85xx has the X1 processor, its missing on the 80xx

85xx is also not available in sizes smaller than 55"

84xx is the superior option technically, but bare in mind its ips only and thus its black levels arent as good as the mva 43" model but its viewing angles are superior.

cost wise the 80xx is better because youre unlikely to notice much benefit from the X1 processor for that difference in price unless your a videophile.

How does this upscale 720p content? I ask because I want to be able to play my ps3 on it as well as BC games with a future Xbone.

I have my PS3 and Wii U hooked up to mine and those games have never looked better. They scale much better than they did on a 1080p display since 720 evenly divides 2160. 4K is a pretty wonderful resolution no matter the era.

I had not tried this, thanks for the reminder!

I still play last gen games fairly regularly. It upscales wonderfully.

Very happy hearing all of this, thanks!

Also, is there a link or a post explaining the panel difference? I was planning on getting a 55" or something along that area. The Rtings review is only for the smaller TV, will input lag/image quality be worse/better with the different panel/size?

What're the best settings for an accurate, good looking HDR picture? As it is HDR actually looks reasonably worse than regular

If you're watching some proper HDR content and it looks worse then either your eyes are wrong or the TV is a dud. HDR looks spectacular. What you do need though I found with my XD8077 is some time to adjust to the wider and more subtle range of colours, initially it looks a bit washed out in non HDR stuff but give it a couple of days of use, switch back to previous settings and you'll realise how over saturated and garish you had everything.

its because the backlight gets ramped up to maximum (as its supposed to on all lcd's) when going into hdr mode.
which causes light bleed, panel glow and/or clouding to become a lot more pronounced. which causes a lot of people to see the picture as suddenly washed out because the deep contrast gets blown.

if you turn the backlight down to regain the deep blacks you defeat the purpose of hdr's penchant for making highlights sparkle.
which even then they wont do as much on this tv because it doesnt have the 1000nits necessary to do it. it only has 350nits approx.

if you want the best of both you need an oled or a full array local dimming lcd.

you still get the wider gamut of colours on this tv, but you we arent getting the full fat hdr experience. gamut is only one part of the hdr equation.

Got the 49 inch last weekend and I've been very happy with it! Only problem I would say is theres very minor backlight bleed right above the sony logo on the bottom, it's not noticeable while playing games and barely noticeable when watching a wide-screen movie (i had to point it out to my brother) so I think I'm just gonna hold onto it, I dont really wanna return it to maybe get something slightly better or way worse imo

So, I'm using the built in netflix app and watching HDR content, any reason why it doesn't automatically adjust the picture? Brightness stays at default and if I look at the picture settings, it doesn't say HDR is enabled despite being set to auto.

I have to change it to on to get HDR working.

Do you have the highest Netflix plan which is required for HDR access? You can "force" the TV to interpret input as HDR but obviously it will look blown out etc.

Yeah, got the highest plan.

On my ps4 or testing an HDR PC game (Shadow Warrior 2, etc), the picture auto adjusts and turns the HDR setting on.

I just don't get it with the netflix app that's with the TV lol.

I'm in love with this TV, been using it to play Nioh and it's bliss.

Are there any good (enough) cheap surround sound systems or just sound bars that work well with this guy? I want a more immersive sound setup for breath of the wild.

That's strange, I definitely get it on my end. Been watching Santa Clarita Diet over the past couple days, and it's very obvious when the HDR kicks in (The Netflix logo at the start of the episode gets washed out when it flips over to HDR).

...lol, my fault. I was watching Stranger Things which doesn't have HDR. SCD worked, and Marco Polo, etc.

If you haven't watched it yet, Luke Cage just got an HDR update. I was extremely impressed by the highlights during nighttime scenes: car headlights, cop cars, etc, all looked unreal.

I'm thinking it's my settings but I'm not sure

So I was reading that for such a small size tv (43 inch), 4k isn't really that much of an improvement over 1080p.

Dunno, I really want something to go along my pro. I sit about 6 feet away from my tv.

Did anyone go from 1080p to 4k? Was it worth the cost?

I have, been thinking about a rewatch before Iron Fist.

I've got a few big screen TVs but I don't use them; maybe a few hours a month for sports. The majority of time I spend is in front of 24s. For the 43" I use it as an every day monitor, and it's been fantastic.
Sure I could've got the KS8000, but it was also another $4-500 which wasn't worth it for me at all just for the extra 12" and "better" quality. Couldn't justify that big a price difference unless it was something mind blowing and a bigger diff. in size.

6ft is borderline.

3-5 ft is about optimal for a 43inch screen @ 4k

i sit 5ft away and its glorious, and definitely an upgrade from 1080p.

And I just bought my 49X800D last night.

That's okay. I'm extremely happy with my purchase.

Ratchet And Clank looks like a Pixar film. No hyperbole.

I think you will be ok - the asking price is $999 lol - I haven't seen full specs but right now I have a hard time reconciling the price difference.

And yeah a lot of games are gonna look great now, R&C, TR is outstanding.

HDR is terrible on this. I had one and I felt ripped off. It is a scam - it can read an HDR signal but it ramps up the backlight so blacks become grey, colours become washed out and frankly way worse than SDR which looks reasonable on this set.

Don't go near it if HDR is what you want - you will be disappointed.

There are surprisingly few sets our there which can do HDR justice.

The cheapest is the Samsumg KS8000 - I ended up gong LG E6 OLED after taking the Sony back - and Currys knew exactly what my issue was and returned it with no quibble.

If people here think that HDR looks good on the Sony, they need to see HDR on a set that can properly display it.

Does ANYONE knows what is upgraded? I presume scaler is newer, and description mentions 178 degree viewing angels. That could mean that 43" model is using IPS this time.

Someone also needs to check if Sony is still using borked EDID.

support for dolby vision.

Did you calibrate the color? I had the same problem but got it looking great after messing with settings. I ended up turning on Live Color after calibration to medium and that alone helped a lot.

I took it back after 3 days for an LG OLED - also the viewing angle is terrible - anything off centre is grey - just not a good set. The only Sony set which is able to do HDR that isn't worse than SDR is the ZD9

Unfortunately GAF is a bit obsessed with this TV, so you are getting all kinds of poorly informed option due to purchasers confirmation bias.
It doesn't help that 98% of people don't even understand what HDR is.

Exactly this - there are very few TVs which can display HDR properly - and many that can accept an HDR signal

I had a Sony KD829B before which was a great HD and gaming set - buying this set offered a nice SDR signal - though horrible viewing angle - but HDR was a sham and if you read on dedicated AV forums this is a known issue.

Seriously the Samsung KS8000 is the cheapest entry level HDR set - and I'm not biased because I bought the LG.

I have the 43, and sitting that distance from a PS4 Pro it's a big upgrade over my 1080P 32 inch screen. Big upgrade in every way, really. Very pleased with this TV.

Mind you, that was an upgrade from a 2009 32inch Samsung 1080P screen (which was pretty good when I got it!) so I think it would be heavily dependant on your current screen. Higher res is definitely and clearly noticeable at this size though, for sure. I tested it with Tomb Raider switching between 4K and 1080 and the resolution increase was impressive.

I can't seem to get the TV to switch to HDR when I'm using it as a PC monitor. I load up the LG Chess demo video and nothing happens. Is it not possible to watch HDR via Windows directly or is there some setting that's not on?

It's not about calibration, the TV can't even get close to 1000nit peak brightness required for HDR highlights. It peaks at something like 350 instead at max backlight that turns on with HDR content.

KS8000 series I think is the only LCD tv that can get there, it can get very very bright. If you want to watch real HDR content, the only real choices are LG OLEDs and KS8000/7000 for those on a lower budget. Everything else is just a pale imitation or a worse option for the money compared with those.

I don't know of any video software that can trigger HDR mode on PC. The only stuff I know that works is the Nvidia HDR demo and obviously the games that support it (RE7, Hitman, Shadow Warrior 2, etc)

The 43" version of this TV is fantastic. The Samsung 8000 did look better but I'm limited to 43" due to a built-in in my wall and I'm not remodeling for a TV just yet.

The colors are vibrant and the picture looks amazing.

I read the 49" has a different panel. Maybe that's why the views on the x800D are so split. Those going with the larger version are getting a worse panel.

Ok, thank you! Was not sure if my HDMI cable wasn't up to spec or something! I did load the video up on a USB stick directly to the TV and it looked great, so I'll just have to do that if I want to watch HDR content.

Did they go back to ips for the 43x800e??

If it has lower lag that would be great!

Plex also works fine for streaming HDR video files to the TV/Shield/whatever if you happen to have a server already setup.
