Gamexplain Explains the Joy-Con Desyncing Problem

Hmmm.... I'm looking at my tape measure now. 10 feet is actually pretty far, much further away than my Switch will be from my couch.

The question for me is, how does it work at 6-8 feet while obstructed?

The joycons are as close to the hardware as possible and your not blocking anything between the hardware to the joycons. So no not even close to the same thing.
Not to mention joycons are "wired" when attached to the console via metal contact points

I think it's quite clear that the signal strength itself seems to be quite weak. Now it's just a question of it being a issue that can be patched or not.

Nintendo plz respond

I never really liked Zelda, so that made it kind of a frivolous pre-order to begin with.

Im thinking the firmware can be updated on the joy cons simoly for the fact that the capture button on the controller cannot capture video yet...but will.with a future update.

It's absurd that Nintendo didn't consider this but we are coming off the 3DS which scratches itself when closed.

I wonder if there are any issues when docked on the grip too

It's physically connected when docked, so I doubt it.

I really doubt the joycons are doing anything sort of logic or processing, but rather just relaying inputs to the console itself.

Nvidia helped nintendo develop the switch correct? The nvidia shield tv controllers can be upgraded via firmware so odds are the switch controllers will be similarly upgradeable.

That won't have anything to do with the joycon, that's all in the Switch OS.

I'm really not that surprised by it, the joycons are tiny and covering small wifi chips will usually do stuff like that, distance and movements all adds up.

Joy-condoms incoming.

IIRC it was a hardware problem in the controller. Didn't really use it after ds3 came out tho.

I think you're mixing that up with the sixaxis and rumble not being able to get along due to interference. The bluetooth sixaxis issues were present for a while, but they eventually were patched out.

Wii U gamepad updates every time that theres a firmware update for the system. So, is totally possible.

That's bad. Because it sounds hardware based, I wonder if Nintendo will issue a recall.

Leave it to Nvidia to figure out how to download more RAM, or more specifically new Bluetooth hardware.

Really hope Nintendo confronts this issue. This is the kind of thing that might cause me to cancel my preorder if not addressed. I can wait for a fix if they're going to issue one.

I am amazed that people don't even wait 24 hours after hearing about something that could be a simple software problem fixable with an update before they make such drastic choices like cancelling their preorders. I mean it's your money but jesus christ. I'd hate to be in the car with you behind the wheel if you knee-jerk react that hard to things.

Yea, it's clearly an issue but I've decided to keep my preorder and see if I have any problems. If i do, I can always return it. I would cancel my second set of Joy Cons and get a Pro Controller if they were available though.

I don't understand the whole "I'm gonna cancel my pre-order." IIRC, the wiimote had this exact same problem with the pointer. It wouldn't go through your hand or your leg.

This really is a deal breaker if this can't be patched. My Wii U had a similar issue after I got it at launch. The Gamepad's signal strength got worse and worse to the point where the console wouldn't even pick up the Gamepad from a foot away. I had to send it in and pay 150 bucks to get it fixed.

I will not put up with controller connection issues again if it's a hardware issue. Would rather cancel my pre-order (and yes, postpone playing Zelda) than deal with that.

Get your shit together, Nintendo.

I'm concerned and even considered it briefly, but once I cancel I probably won't get one for a while. I'd hate for this to be fixed and me not have a preorder. On top of that we don't know how many people this will effect and most (all?) retailers should honor returns for anyone that has an issue. I will wait and see and hopefully Nintendo has a fix.

While this is a worrying thing to be happening right before launch, I'm pretty sure this can be overcome with a day-1 patch. Plus, I'll be using a pro-controller when I'm "far away" from the Switch, and Joy Cons when I'm on the go. Doubt I'll have much a problem...hopefully *knocks on wood*

But the whole "boost power for Bluetooth" resulting in shorter battery life argument -- that's talking about when the joycons are REMOVED from the unit. Not explicitly when you're in the "portable" mode. I doubt that'd have much effect on playtime in the grand scheme of things.

The pointer is entirely from the IR camera on the front of the Wii remote that tracks the IR lights in the sensor bar. The motion controls, buttons, and analog stick still worked because they went through Bluetooth.

The pointer was used for sparingly in a lot of games so the issue wasn't major, while this affects everything. The issue isn't the same at all.

Difference here is that if you use the Joycons as single units in each hand if you close your fingers around it you will get interference. Not really an issue on the Wii with the wiimotes because you are not going to have your hand over the IR sensor when it's needed due to good design.

That has nothing to do with firmware in the controllers.

People need to go cancel their preorder now
so others can get one

Ha sorry I'd rather just get it and wait for day-one feedback from people who dig in heavily.

I can wait until Saturday to open it along w/ Zelda. If joycons are terrible, I'll just return it or sell it for cost on ebay.

If this isn't sorted by Tuesday I'm canceling and waiting.

Yeah, I'm hyped as hell for the Switch but I just cant justify having to pay $70 for the Pro controller just to be able to play my games at a reasonable distance properly. I'm already paying >$80 in other accessories, half of which is just for storage.

Hopefully they say something by Monday or Tuesday. I really dont want to have to cancel my preorder.

you know it would be great... if you know. nintendo mentioned this officially rather than on someones twitter account?
Right now, the only people who know about this story are insiders that aren't going to be seriously swayed by any public statement. But making a public statement then elevates the issue to a broad audience issue. If they're genuinely confident saying this will be fixed by launch, they gain nothing by speaking up now.

I imagine if this has hit the mainstream press by tomorrow morning, we get a statement tomorrow afternoon. If it stays an 'insider media' story, we don't hear shit.
