17-minute-long IGN look at Mass Effect Andromeda (Peebee Loyalty Mission SPOILERS)

Just saw this on Tumblr

Holy shit wtf is this?

You can see them tears and sweat poured into the animations of this game.

peebee is as annoying as I feared which is disappointing.

While I don't find her irritating, I am a bit worried about what it is that makes her an interesting character. I love Asari and she's the only Asari squadmate, so I just hope she has a good backstory and brings something intriguing to the table as a character.

So far I'm definitely drawn to her the least out of all the squadmates maybe except for Liam.

At the least we'll still have Dr. Lexi. She seems awesome and has an incredible VA.

The dialogue just sounds...off. It's hard for me to describe but it feels too faux clever with no sense of authenticity. Gears 4 had the same feel for me.

Does anyone have Fem!Shep run animation from Mass Effect 3 handy?

EDIT Here it is:

This get's me every single time. I was scrolling through the thread and I had just taken a sip of a beer and spit it out at my monitor.

Dammit.

EDIT

fuck me now I'm crying I'm laughing so damn hard haha those damn stiff bionic legs on femshep. OMG

Of course it matters because it pictures the kind of mindset the developer has for this game, in that it's okay to do a half-assed job in certain parts just because of... what? It's worrying. If even such a simple thing can be missed, what other things that they just simply don't pay attention to?

Every Mass Effect game has had terrible looking goofy animations in parts. And yes, it's perfectly fine to half ass parts of your game that are on screen for half a second in a 40+ hour RPG.

I'm one of the most vocally negative people in every mass effect community thread but even I'm starting to get tired of this "find 15 frames that look shit and post them in every thread" level of nitpicking. Yes, that disarm animation looked bad. Yep, that punch doesn't connect. If people can't get past this I don't know how they got through previous games in the series where Mark Vandermeer spent half the trilogy looking like a sex predator whenever he smiled and holding sprint gave you an animation straight out of the ministry of silly walks.

What I don't get is why so much pre-release stuff focuses on the combat. Combat was never the reason why i played mass effect

Show some exploration with the new mako and perhaps some side quest

Pretty sure the video this Thursday or Friday is focused on exploration.

Gears4 was at least genuinely funny at times. "They'll mess up my tomatoes!"

Got to appeal to COD crowd. Or is it Overwatch crowd these days?

I am just hoping for some meaty, good side quests. Combat looks satisfying. Although for me, that was least interesting part of the ME universe. I just want to go evil on everyone and cackle with laughter.

Well hopefully the level of care they have shown so far in some of the animations are not replicated elsewhere in the game then.

it's time for every person who 'couldn't see the generational difference' to eat crow, I think
besides some of the player character's animations this is a pretty damn good looking game

I will not take or assume any responsibility for any possible damage to your monitor, your eyes from crying or your lungs from laughing.

rofl.

Gears4 was at least genuinely funny at times. "They'll mess up my tomatoes!"

That was literally the only funny part though, anything with Marcus at least.

The rest of the attempts at humor, all those "cute" Whedon wanna be quips and banter all completely missed.

Well, yeah, no one did because it was terrible. Only in ME3 was it tolerable, but even then it was still behind the times.

Going by the writing on display, it seems like the gameplay will be the sole savior for this.

Probably want to avoid people getting spoiled. Like the twitter pics above saying that dialogue wheels were cut for the video for that same reason.

Problem is it's giving the wrong impression of what the real game is to people...

I'm not worried about being spoiled. As soon as I get control I'm throwing peeebeee out the airlock.

That's an option right?

On the hand-holding subject: last night I did the ME3 mission where you go inside the geth collective to cure the infection and deactivate the geth that are attacking the quarian fleet.

This mission happens very late in the game.

It introduces a new mechanic.

The mechanic is largely the same for the entire mission, although it does adapt somewhat as new ways of using it crop up.

Through the whole mission, Legion keeps telling me to "target weak spots further along to stop the infection regenerating," etc. I lost count of the times he told me. I knew to do that after the first time he told me, but you sometimes have to shoot at two or three different spots to find the right one, and if you get the wrong one he'll say it again. And again.

SAM's directions in this IGN demo looked less egregious than that, and I say that having only played through it last night, so it's fresh in my memory.

This isn't new for BioWare. I get the "I wish they'd done away with this sort of thing because I didn't like it in the original trilogy" complaint, but to wave your arms and flap about in a way that suggests it's somehow an unexpected and utterly outrageous crime against gaming... a small step back and a little perspective may be in order.

"Something just crawled up my ass!" face.

But man, I was hoping, despite how she was described, that Peebee wouldn't be as cringe-inducing as I thought she would be. And oh dear she is. Writing has never been very good in Mass Effect, but goodness. I'm going to miss Liara deeply.

Exactly. I love Joss Whedon but when you imitate him and fail you just fall flat on your face.

Seems more "oh god here we go" face.

Do you guys think a nice bulk of that pre 10 hour access patch is being devoted to facial animations during cinematics based on feedback?

Wasn't it mentioned previously that is one of the last things devs work on prior to release? Man I can't imagine how intense the bug fixing is in those Bioware studios right now. Bless those bug fixers with all the long nights and tough mornings they must be experiencing.

Hm, this does nothing for me. Then again I personally haven't really cared for Mass Effect for some time. I was hoping it would be more...less...something that this wasn't.

The gameplay looks good and I imagine the multiplayer being fun, but just like other Mass Effects, I don't know if I can sit through a lot of this stuff. And I'm sure the story has depth and everything, but it just feels so plain to me as far as voice acting, the events that are taking place, everything. Not to mention having to look at weird ass faces while trying to take the story seriously. I can handle things not looking "great", take the simple nature of a (past) Zelda games visuals for example. The developers know what they're doing there and what bounds they shouldn't cross. This game is going for realism and ending up with a bunch of characters that look like Bill Cosby after eating a gallon of pudding. I just don't buy it.

After two trailers which piqued my interest...

... no longer hyped for this game.

There's just too many games coming out for me to realistically play them all. I still need to play Resi7, Nioh, Yakuza 0 and TLG. Upcoming games I want include Horizon, Zelda and Nier. Sadly ME:A is just not showing to be as spectacular as these other games in my opinion.

Supposedly, IGN is deleting comments from YouTube?

This is coming from other YouTube comments, but lol if true. As if they couldn't be any more useless.

Her face still looks like a rough Sunday morning. Fantastic.

And what's with the dialogue? Did they farm the script out to a high school fan club?

My personal favorite, the ol' Sticky Avenger. It's been five years since ME3 and they're still doing shit we laughed at in ME1. How the hell is "model with default gun" still a thing in 2017?

It's not going to kill my enjoyment of the game (I'm happy just to romp around in space shooting at aliens/robots), but it's a bit absurd that things like this still pop up, and twice as absurd that they decided to go with this in their marketing materials.

Obviously she's holding the gun with biotics. Just like Sara punches with biotics.

What's this new tendency to have the characters talk all the fucking time? It seems to be the new hand holding, but rather than arrows on the floor, they fucking talk you through every little detail that is happening and that a 6 years old would understand just by looking.

It's kind of ironic, the industry is going towards OOT's navi with it's "Hey listen!" while zelda is moving towards the opposite, where the industry used to be, taking gamers' intelligence seriously.

edit, found a comment that nailed what i'm talking about, this feels like Dora the explorer almost.

Why did they choose to go with such ugly looking characters? Is it a design / artistic choice? People can't be good looking in space? Or something else?

Heh. But, its increasingly the focus of these games. I guess the developers ask themselves "Should we add some more cookie cutter waist high cover combat encounters or some softcore sex. Decisions, decisions."

Lessee, hmm, bug fixing or softcore porn.

Did I miss it, or does the third squad member not have a single line of dialogue in the whole mission? Maybe some generic combat barks, but no actual scripted lines.

FemRider still looks...A little touched in the head. Sorry. It's the dopey semi-permanant smirk I think. Gave the benefit of the doubt with the first gameplay, and they and others said they'd be working on faces right till launch, but now we're right up at launch.

While I disagree with the general principle of 'perfectly fine' insofar as it relates to half-assing versus the inability to improve something via time constraints (as it relates to the 5+ years they've had to work on this game....)

At the same time, while I don't disagree that some of this is getting nitpicky, and that people will/won't see certain janky aspects that others do (took me a few views to really see the lack of grip on the assault rifle the asari is waving, since I wasn't focusing on the rifle itself), but as I said earlier....it's been 5 years.

On some level, I don't think some level of improvement in the rigging and such would have been, if not a priority, at least _better_ than what ME3 had in some spots.
