17-minute-long IGN look at Mass Effect Andromeda (Peebee Loyalty Mission SPOILERS)

I wanted to give female Ryder a chance ... just can't

default male it is, it's not like Shepard was a high standard to live up to anyway.

Well, resident Character Extraordinaire Patrick Weekes was the writer on Inquisition. So you can bank on some solid character work.

Not trying to nitpick you or anything, but Sera was written by Lukas Kristjanson who was the lead on BGII. Though I agree with you, Weekes now being the Lead Writer for DA and how he handled characters like Solas, Cole, Iron Bull, etc. and his first task as Lead (Trespasser) after Gaider left make me extremely interested in the next game's direction.

I'm looking forward to this game, despite Bioware clearly trying to sway me not to with what they are showing. There has to be a better 17 minute snippet in the game to show than this surely?

Fucking hell. Terrible writing, pacing, encounter design, facial animations, dialogue and voice acting.

And this is what they chose to show as an example?

Sera was literally the only reason I stuck with that game for as long as I did. Not only did her voice actor knock it out of the park, she was also important for the medium - it felt incredibly refreshing to have a female party member (and a major character in general) who isn't designed to look "bangable" by video game nerd standards.

Did you REALLY played a game which was... what, a 70 hour game, just because it had a companion who you considered 'important for the medium"??

Yeah, I think Kristjanson is writing for Liam in ME:A, and Sheryl Chee (Leliana, Oghren, Isabella, Blackwall) is writing for Vetra. Not sure who else, I'm curious who will end up writing which character. I loved what Kristjanson did with Aveline, but wasn't as big a fan of Sera, so I'm curious to see where Liam ends up. I'm also very curious to see what Weekes does with DA from now on, as Tresspasser was great. I loved Cole, Solas, and his ME characters, but I was pretty eeeh on Iron Bull. I will definitely miss Gaider's writing on characters, though, he ended up writing a lot of my favorites.

The graphics look good as far as open games go and y'all can't seriously be pretending this isn't the best looking custom character + dialogue tech on the market

Nothing seen about the game excites me. I am not expecting Mass Effect 1 style of 'shock and awe' but at least tingling in the balls would be nice. Am I too old and jaded? That cant be, I was very excited about W3 and it delivered even more than the hype train promised. Every gameplay snip gives me DA:I vibes which are more on the negative side. The sum of gameplay mechanics, dialogue and visuals are just average at best. OR should I just accept that Bio is an average company creating average games?

That is the default character. What is different about the dialogue tree relative to previous games?

Yeah like people are complaining and it is janky but... I literally can't think of any game with customizable faces that has better facial animation

Fallout 4 sure doesn't, no previous Bioware games do, The Technomancer was WAY worse, no MMOs where you pick dialogue manage it...not a ton of contenders here.

Seems unfair to compare to games with set protagonists

'Default' means nothing here, this isn't like Sheploo. The default models may as well he random cc models despite being based off someone. They are not of higher quality than custom faces.

It was the same with Femshep, the same with DA:I

Bull wasn't my favorite by any means, but I guess it was something different for him which is fine too. Solas was my favorite lol. I can already tell that I will like Vetra's personality, I think she's going to gel well with how I'd like to portray my Ryder. Regarding Gaider, I want to say I read that he will continue to write the characters he wrote for DA (i.e. Morrigan and Dorian as they will most certainly appear in DA4, Cassandra too perhaps) in a contractual capacity, but I can't find any source at the moment. It might have been a Twitter conversation.

Just watched the footage. I did ME 1-3 with FemShep, but i'm having doubts with Ryder here. That voice is going to annoy the living shit out of me.
To add to what others are saying...yeah, it looks like a kids game. The voice acting, the narration all feels incredibly juvenile.

BioWare said that they played through all their competitors, like Witcher 3.

I don't think they did. Even the peasant grandmas in that game look better, and have better facial animations then ME:A's main character.

How the hell? W3 came out two years ago.

That is the default character. What is different about the dialogue tree relative to previous games?
1: Default just refers to her appearance having been scanned from a real model. Does not change the fact that the animations have to be loose enough to accommodate a huge variety of faces and features for dozens of hours of dialogue without breaking just because you chose big lips and angry eyes and someone else didn't. It is fantastically complex and inherently comes with the downside that animations cannot be tightened to one model perfectly for the mass amounts of dialogue. The animation still has to fit on different faces, so it will be looser than the ideal non-customizable character would be in another game.

2: Their custom dialogue tech is better than any other AAA, RPG, etc competitors. It works well and they add a large amount of dynamic motions and tailored interruptions to make it do all that it does well, especially considering you and your squad may be different in looks and lines every time you see the scenes. Just because it looks similar to before, doesn't mean it is behind the competition one bit.

But please give me examples of better custom character presentation and such. I'm looking for them.

Okay now this is worrying. Enjoyed ME 1 and 3, loved 2, but every time they've shown this game it's looked terrible. Unless reviews are absolutely incredible it's a bargain bin game two years from now for me.

I want to get my hands on the guy who came up with the marketing for this game and strangle him.
Of all the days you could have released this gameplay walkthrough, you do it on the very day Horizon comes out? Come on!

Peebee is really annoying. I'm extremely underwhelmed if I'm honest. I never thought I'd feel like that. I was always so excited.

Bioware makes the worst faces, my god.

Even aside from the cringeworthy dialogue and bad animation, I'm not really liking how the combat looks. The only reason I'm interested in the game at all is for the multiplayer (since I still play Mass Effect 3's multiplayer to this day), so I really hope it isn't a step back in that regard.

I don't really gush over CDPR and W3 like a lot of people do on GAF. But after playing W3 and experiencing its quality, I can't help but feel that once Cyberpunk 2077 finally comes out, we'll have very different discussions about CCs and what can and can't be done with games that have them.

Just a feeling.

"You should be able to use dispensing points to enlist their help." "Sweet! Let's do that!"

Talking to mechanical squid thing, "Thanks there little buddy!"

"Retreival may be impossible." "Ah... Oops!"

"Kalisaria, are you tracking that sweet signal too?"

"A triple share to whoever brings me their sweet implants."

[Evil laugh], "So long, losers."

Ah, so I see why they haven't been leading with the writing and story. All that tude.

Yeah, I was less bothered by the hand-holding dialogue and more concerned by this stuff.

That 17 minutes was a slog to get through, which is not the effect a preview should have.

People keep saying that Bioware might be keeping all the "good stuff" secret for now, but at a certain point you need to show people proof that there's at least, you know, some good stuff in your game.

Also a little worried about the performance (some of the previews also mentioned this), wonder what rig they were on.

Did you REALLY played a game which was... what, a 70 hour game, just because it had a companion who you considered 'important for the medium"??
Yes, I REALLY played that game for far longer than I would otherwise just because it had a unique character who amused me. This may surprise you, but characters are kind of a big deal in games of this type.
I started playing it for a different reason and stopped because eventually a single character wasn't enough enough to push me through the bad parts.

I`m sure the game is good, but who thought it would be a good idea to show us a 17 minute long video of a boring ass planet without any population, story, dialogue and consequences? This sort of marketing is why people are negative.

"Seems uninspired." was a comment I heard about Andromeda today and I found myself agreeing. This game seems to check off things from a 'must do' list without any kind of creativity.
But the worst part about ME:A is its setting: I don't care about what's going to happen in another galaxie. For all I know I'm not even the first human to set foot into andromeda, there are already human outposts out there, making my role as a pathfinder/scout for humanity way less interesting. Let me go back to the milky way and let me experience a sci fi post apocalypse and let me build a new future for mankind there.
I also still feel burned out after DA:I because of the tedious collectibles, resource gathering, huge but empty zones and boring combat.

Sorry for venting a bit. I really like Mass Effect 1-3 and I want to play Andromeda but I don't feel it. In a way Andromeda feels like AC:Syndicate (first AC game I wasn't able to finish): unnecessary and without enough fresh wind.

Looks awesome to me. I don't know what all the crying is about. Yea PeeBee sounds a bit annoying but it's not something that will ruin the game for me. I just won't bang her :P

I actually fell asleep watching this. I love mass effect but this looks boring and the writing at least in this portion is not good. Considering the loyalty and dlc missions were the best in the previous games this has me worried.

That looks like the most boring way to play the game. I guess it reassuring for those who love to sit behind a chest high wall... whoever they are

How else can it be played? I bought the original Mass Effect on 360 and although I started it (about 2 hours in), I didn't continue because at the time I was selling my house and had to put all my gaming shit away. Years later as other games come out, I've never got back to it and always regretted it (did the same with Gears too).

Goddamn it, I hope there's a way to kill Peebee off, because she's the goddamn worst.

Also, I don't know if it's just the normal difficulty, but the guns seem weak as shit. Not a good sign.

Some effects look good and others look like they're from the previous gen. Can't stand the explosion/fire/smoke effect when shooting robot type enemies. I know I'm nit-picking but it looks fucking awful.

Shooting seems too similar to prior games, boring. You get cover, point the reticle to static enemy and shoot a lacking of feedback weapon.
When will devs realize that not disabling reticle while in cover makes shooting a simple pointing game?.If you disable it you are forced to leave cover to make your shoots and make everything more tactical and realistic.

This sounds like it would be great!

Can we PLEASE stop nitpicking quick shots holy fuck it's like NeoGAF is a constant version of CinemaSins BUT THESE PEOPLE ARE FUCKING SERIOUS.

For fuck sake.

But you're talking about people who have loved and played this series with fond memories who probably accepted certain faults at the time purely due to standards. 5 years + people expect better. It's as simple as that. Faults, nit-picking things should be dealt with. Too much emphasis by some developers 'ticking' certain boxes and not others for me.

Look at me, I've not even played the series but looking at shitty ass explosion/fire/smoke on robot enemies puts me off. Compare this to HZD or human enemies in TLOU when they are batted or molotoved (how they scream in agony etc.). This feels sterile compared.

Haven't kept track on this game, but the player never seems to give directions (position, skills etc) to the allies. Has this been removed?

Yeah I couldn't tell this either. I also wish that when the weapon wheel is used, rather than time be frozen, it just moved at a slow-downed pace instead. Creates much more emergency.

ShrekBee gets me every time lol. Game looked crisp but this demo was boringly simple. Ryder also sounded like she was speaking to a five-year old tagging along. Let's scan some rocks, isn't that neat? Eh.

First thing I thought of at the start of the video. The emotion of the speech wasn't in place with being on a volcanic new planet, suspecting danger at every corner, shit getting serious type of vibes. That's what I'd be like if I were 'really' there!

Am I the only one who finds the visuals to be pretty average? I expected so much more than a linear Frostbite game designed around 30 fps on consoles, honestly Battlefront looks much better to me.

I think they looked good and perhaps would look much better in person but like I mentioned earlier, some of the effects look last gen to me.

The dialogue just sounds...off. It's hard for me to describe but it feels too faux clever with no sense of authenticity. Gears 4 had the same feel for me.

Agreed.

I feel like the strongest focus has been on female Ryder this time, but I could be wrong. I just think it`s odd when people prefer male.

I think they have chosen to market the game using the female Ryder this time, the previous trilogy always used the male Shep in trailers and things. I remember reading about it months ago.

I can't get over the name Peebee, wtf is that?

I will be doing some serious work in the character creator this time, female Ryder looks so odd.

Yeah it does seem like she gets the videos that have the most content and talking .

I've been trying to figure out which Ryder to use but I haven't heard enough Male Ryder.

You know I've been thinking and I wonder if the Voice Actor strike really fucked over this game. Would explain the especially awful voice acting on display throughout this video although it doesn't really explain the bad writing.

As expected, we're getting another Dragon Age Inquisition in Mass Effect clothes. Hopefully there will be some redeeming companions like DAI had Dorian for example and hopefully at least the main missions will be great like the fancy assasination party in DAI.

Go play the Kasumi DLC for ME2. I suspect that's the closest we'll come to a fancy assassination party, specifically.

Looks super solid and I´m super pumped, but Shrek character designs are a bummer.

No Idea why people at Bioware thought the characters had to look like this.

Really, REALLY unfortunate.
