Sony X800D well - reviewed, 4k+HDR TV with low input lag

So there is a Sony X800E model releasing in 10 days, it cost $1k and i'm not sure what improvements is included. Looks like i'll be waiting for reviews and a price drop, hoping for hdmi 2.1 support

No TV announced so far has HDMI 2.1 support because spec is still not released to the licencees. That will happen at summer, and MAYBE some rare late 2017 TV models will get 2.1 support. Most liky that will slip to 2018 TVs.

As for X800E, here's the currently known info about it. Nobody has gotten it and tested it yet.

Most likely it will only get better image processing. No info is known about possible increase in HDR brigtness or types of panels.

Thanks, disappointed it likely won't have hdmi 2.1. Maybe i'll grab the X800D than if it goes on sale since the X800E is coming out.

Just got this tv to replace my aging 9 year old sony bravia 1080p tv. Just using a regular ps4 and playing HZD it already shits on my old tv from a mountain. Smart TV features are pretty sweet as well.
Using all the rtings.com settings atm, enhances hdmi, game mode, brightness 1, contrast max rest on auto and it looks so sweet.

Is motionflow worth using?

Going to get a ps4 pro tomorrow so I can actually play in 4k and HDR.

I have my brightness at 25. Brightness at 1 seems too low, especially if you play in a lit room.

I have a question regarding HDR with a normal PS4, Switch, etc.

Does enabling HDR improves the image quality of the games on these other consoles?

Not necesdarily. I am assuming you mean turning HDR on for non-HDR content? I feel it becomes too saturated and artificial. You would be better served tinkering with things like live color and whatnot. But do you mean whether HDR improves image quality because HDR is automatic when the TV detects HDR content. When you are watching quality HDR content it looks great, other times you may not like it.

BHPhotoVideo is usually great with updating specs and listing things correctly. It seems this years model is just a straight rebadge of 2016 X800D series with some slightly better software technologies, built in 4K chromecast etc. I would assume nit panel brightness will be higher as well, but almost everything else the same. Maybe you'll see HDMI 2.1 on all ports, better Android software and HDR image processing but it is the same X-Reality Pro 4K processor not the better 4K X1 or 4K X1 Extreme Processor.

Is this generally still considered a good bang for your buck hdtv for gaming? I coulda swore there was a "help me buy a new gaming tv" thread, but I can't find it.

Got some questions.

- Is the quality of the screen really deteriorate when u watch from an angle, from the side with the X800D? I tried a year ago like the 550c and imo it was horrible, like when you watched from the side, at like let say 30 degree, return it because of that and the horrible motion blur.

- Picture retention. Is there any? Rtings test out the 43, but the panel of the 49 is supposed to be different. So is it as horrible as the X700d which have like an over 10 minutes of image retention?

their brightness setting, and mine, is based on being in a dark room.

if youre in a bright environment turn it up.

picture at an angle is not brilliant on the 43"

the 49" is ips so should be better.

i just bought this TV and viewing angle is totally fine.

Oh great thanks! Its about the angle i wanted to see. It does indeed look fine! But now i read on rtings that the contrast is lower on the 49. And your black seem greyish. Is it maybe just the movie your playing? For games your 49 does a great job?

The 43" (VA panel, better contrast and black levels than the 49") has narrow viewing angles before the picture deteriorates. The 49" is an IPS panel, which provides wide viewing angles while maintaining color, though it has worse blacks.

I have narrowed down my choice of TV's to X800D 43" and the Samsung KS8000 (concerned about the build quality and availability is dwindling). Primary purpose is for bedroom watching (X800D fits, is an upgrade to my 2006 768p Vizio 32", current content is streaming/gaming over consoles/pc). Over the years my primary screen has been various monitors, so that's what I will be shifting from. With the 2017 lineup releasing in a few weeks, should I wait or should I buy?

Edit: Reading some more, the 2017 specs appear to change port locations with no other obvious changes. Now just to get a good deal on the X800D.

there's no black in that frame, i don't have another screen from that angle though. after two days with the tv i highly recommend it.

i think few articles said it was VA panel now, so that would be big upgrade, together with other things.

edit: thats for XE85 (X850E) model actually.

Hey. Not sure if it's just me who has this TV and a Switch but I'm playing Zelda and and the default setting is game mode. On a whim I turned on Live Football mode and it makes the game look extremely rich and it pops like candy. Loving it.

I think that's just because it's turning up the color and sharpness. Be careful though, turning up color may create more 'pop' but also takes away from artistic accuracy. And turning up sharpness creates aliasing issues.

But nonetheless, if it's pleasing to you....than it's up to you.

How do Wii U games look on this TV in general?

I should be setting both this TV and Zelda on Wii U this week, so hoping it looks decent

(I also hope PS3 games look good as I have a fair few left to get though before I pick up a Pro)

I bought this TV a few days ago on amazon and I'm quite happy with it. The only thing that really bothers me is the DSE/Vertical banding (?) this set seems to have. It's immediately noticeable when you move the camera during night time in Zelda BOTW for example. I never noticed something like this on my old 32 inch sony tv so I'm not quite sure if this is normal or if should exchange the tv.

It's kind of hard to capture on a photo, but do you guys think this is normal?

There are lots of jaggies for sure (it's the game's fault), but BOTW runs terrific with interpolation (MotionFlow) set to SMOOTH on this TV.

XE is out, nothing on input lag etc yet. 80 series is 1000 euros for 43 inch. I guess the 55 is above my budget, if it even exists. Only 43 inch available at mediamarkt right now.

I'm in the same situation right now. Tried out the islands level from Uncharted 4 (on a normal PS4) and the vertical lines are really obvious when looking at the sky and rotating the camera. Not sure if that's how it's supposed to be with this model (the 49"), or if I just got a bad one. I'm curious, in this any different with the VA panel of the 43" or has this nothing to do with panel type?

Edit: Are there any picture settings that have an effect on banding that I should check out?

I turned it up to 10 now which is just perfect, but my room is badly lit.

No DSE/grey bands showing up, tried the same level on pro with hdr. Using game mode and warm color on 43" VA.

I would not normally fall for the trap of very over priced HDMI cables.

But what would people recommend with a 4K TV

For instance, will the cable that came with the Pro suffice?

Using the pro cable atm, it is absolutely fine for 4K/HDR.

Amazon refunded my money btw, how is it looking on your end?

Yeah my money back on the card as of this morning. That seller will have a hard time coming back from this!

So I begin again

So I am either looking at this TV which for me works out at roughly €960

Or the Ks7000 which will be about €1,300

In your opinion does the Samsung justify that extra €300+ ?

Yeah, it's either my panel or there's something wrong with my setup, but I have no experience with DSE at all (none of my previous LCDs had it). Maybe there's less DSE with PS4 Pro? Or there's some setting on the normal PS4 (or the TV) that can reduce it?

Probably I'm gonna return it though, and then my question would be if either 43" or 49" have a higher chance of DSE, or if they're totally the same in this regard?

I submitted the A-Z guarantee claim yesterday; so I guess I have a little while to wait. I didn't think you could file the claim unless they fail to delivery the order within the time window; hence why I didn't do it until yesterday.

Is that the process you guys went through?

Glad to hear it!

I haven't personally owned the X800D, so I can't say exactly. Coming from sony's 2015 smart TV interface, Tizen 2016 is much snappier and intuitive, so thats a big plus. Around here the KS is inexplicably slightly cheaper at the moment, so that was an easy buy. 300+ EUR sounds like a bit too much to shell out extra, but maybe other posters will have more direct advice in this case? I recall one poster owning both currently.

yes, I filed a claim and just selected "issue with delivery" I think it was.

I actually got notification it would be refunded on Sunday and money is back today

I will say that Tizen is pretty limited compared to 2016 Android 6.0 OS. My KS8000 does not have even some of the basic apps, whereas on my X800D I have Kodi, Twitch, etc. Sony voice control works so flawlessly too I can just press thr voice button in any app and it searches in that app only or all apps whereas the Samsung only allows limited search and universally even pulling up web browser results. Anyone who has tried to type in the YouTube App to search on the KS8000 can tell you.

I would say from a picture standpoint, the KS8000 is the superior television easily. Better blacks, better HDR and brighter backlight panel. But software wise, it is really poor. In game mode, you have to manually change backlight when playing something with HDR and going back whereas all auto on the Sony. At best on the Sony I have had some slowdown, but on the KS8000 I have so many issies with Netflix freezing at profile select, YouTube app becomes a glitchy mess where 10 videos overlap on thumbnail or things don't clear.

But I digress. Picture wise the KS8000 is superior. I find HDR looks better on it than the X800D and that is solely due to brightness. Is it 300€ better? Maybe. It depends on the size. The KS8000 will be a more future proof tv in the long run as it UHD Premiun/HDR10 fully certified. But there are build quality and software issues. There are issues with back panel separation. One of my corners has started to pop out. Samsung is poor with software updates. Sony has promised to update all 2015 to 2017 models recently and add things like hybrid log gamma hdr support. Whereas Samsung you'd be lucky to see an update beyond 1165 that fixes anything for the KS8000.

Pro cable works fine. As does the Xbox One S cable. If you do need a new or spare, just get something off of Amazon. The newest AmazonBasics, BlueRigger or Mediabridge cables. The latest standards are up/available and should run you under $10 for 6 feet etc.

Thank you for this. very helpful. I had read somewhere else about the back panel on the Samsung coming separated. That would be a big concern for me. And that is excellent info on Sony offering faster updates etc…

I think am going to go for the Sony.

Just to add to it, i own both the sets as well.I dont use anything on the tv's besides cast and netflix so i wont comment on the software.
my personal experience, far as tv's go has always been a lot more positive with sony as compared to samsung.
ive had 3 samsungs die on me horribly and a sony that i bought back in 2008 still worked last i heard in 2016.
i guess i just feel safer buying sony tv's because lord knows i tend to abuse my electronics.

Both Amazon Basics cables I bought failed to pass HMDI and would wig out when the PS4 Pro tried to do 4K in general. I wouldn't recommend them.

Could be poor quality control or older cables? They say they are the latest HDMI 2.0 and above standard. The one thing is that they do not label their cables as well as in the past which they would state HDMI 1.3, HDMI 1.4 etc. So who knows. I like to read the recent reviews more than older ones because a lot of people write that they can get 4k 60 hz with them, or no problems hooking up their Xbox One S or PS4 Pro.

What kind of cloth should I use to wipe the screen?

Super plush microfiber or extra soft lens cloth. Don't use anything besides distilled water and maybe one or two drops of dial. Believe me, I have all sorts of screen and lens cleaners and they all left streaks. What I do now is use 3 microfiber cloths. One to just feather touch remove dust on screen, thrn I use pure distilled water in a bowl, one or two drops of dial dish soap, move it around with your hand getting it a little soapy, put your cloth in, soak it, and then wring it slightly so still damp but not dripping everywhere. One directional wipes only on the screen. Then follow up with a dry microfiber, again one direction only using more firm pressure. Use a maglite or smartphone flashlight after to see whether any drops or streaks.

May seem crazy, but keeps the screen sparkling for a long time. If you don't have any visible markings on the screen or no streaks or fingerprints, just use a plush microfiber or lens cloth and get the dust off, the microfiber loops will just grab the dust off.

I ended up using these for my receiver

Link me to a good cloth.

I jumped on it yesterday and will receive it probably end of the week. I already scanned through the display settings and feel confident.

However one question to the existing users. When I play on my PS4 I obviously play in Game mode. Can I switch fast to like my normal TV/Movie mode when entering another HDMI (set-top box e.g.) or is this rather annoying. I wouldn't watch TV on Game mode I guess?

I'm pretty sure the mode is saved on an HDMI port basis and as such the selected mode on one port will not carry over to another meaning you can set a different mode on all of the 4 available ports.
