Fallon forced to change ‘Tonight Show’ amid Colbert ratings wins

Ugh no... please don't infest his show with a bunch of politics. I still prefer Kimmel, but Fallon was a nice refreshing change of pace from all the redundant political jokes.

I'm a huge Colbert, Bee, Stewart and politics fans, but I agree mixing politics into his shtick will sink Fallon even more. He's just not political, not even in his personal life, from what I've gathered.

Despite what many people may think, Conan is pretty political, especially personally (Andy Richter is sharp AF on Twitter on politics), but he manages to focus on non-cynical aspects of politics, which has kept him relevant and out of controversy at the same time.

But Fallon can't pull that off because he's rally just bland overall and more suitable for celebrity sketches than anything else.

The Tonight Show will just have to muddle through the Trump years, unless they replace Fallon. And I don't think Seth would be a good fit for the Tonight Show either, if any of you are thinking that.

Fallon doing political humor will probably be cringe inducing. Honestly Fallon shouldn't do it because the end result is just going to make it more obvious that he's inferior to Colbert

He should work on that phony laugh of his:

Nothing about this dude seems genuine.

I think history will condemn NBC shitting on Conan, if Conan was there i bet he would be competitive if not winning. Conan had the bad luck of coming in the middle of a demographic shift.

Make Questlove the new host & let Black Thought take over the sidekick role.

Yo that would be dope

It'll never work because Fallon never had the credibility as any kind of political commentator, while Colbert's whole career is built on it.

I don't see how him getting political is going to help much. It's not his shtick. His problem is that the 'celebrities playing games' or 'history of dance' type stuff gets boring after a while and at this point, Corben is one upping him in that category and taking all the internet clip glory from him.

I honestly think he should just keep doing what he's doing and hope to ride out the Trump presidency. At least then he'll keep his core viewership, nothing wrong w/ being number 2 to Colbert during a very politically charged period. His attempt at political humor is going to be so awful and probably drive more people away.

Ehh I dunno. Conan never had mainstream appeal and I don't see his type of show topplign Colbert in this environment.

Fallon was killing it when no other late night host was really taking advantage of YouTube or viral videos. The world caught up, and now subject matter matters again when the delivery mechanism is pretty much the same across the board.

Yeah, this is very true and you're seeing people like Corben slightly alter the formula while gaining more success. I can't remember the last time I watched a Fallon Youtube clip whereas 2 years ago I'd be watching them on a pretty regular basis.

also NBC was killing the lead in with the terrible Leno talkshow that came on before the news. The affiliates wanted Leno off the air and to get their drama lead-in back, NBC tried to pull some shit and here they are

All late night shows are awful...AWFUL. Fallon is doing what he was put on there to do a safe by the numbers show. But whoever put him in that spot wont get the blame, he will.

The real winner in late night is and has always been Carson Daly. Sitting comfortably in that 1 am or 2 am spot whenever that show comes on for over a decade or so now.

This is kinda hilarious. An all-flash no-substance viral video machine wins while the world is good, and then when the world is bad people come crawling back to someone of substance looking for answers. And it's worth noting that Fallon isn't even the best no substance viral video generator on late night -- Corden laps him on that front.

That show is still on?

Whats up with the weird hate for Fallon?

Never fucked with his show heavy but always like the fact he brought a lot of up and coming rappers to his show to perform.

This. I'm not sure where the Fallon hate is coming from and this place is the first I've ever seen any negativity for him. Did he do something? Is he a bad person? Idk. If people dislike his show then they can dislike it but these hatred comments, I mean there's gotta be something else right?

As for his show, nah, it's two different shows. He shouldn't have to change his format to address politics. Leave that to Colbert while Fallon and keep doing his thing. His show needs to stay as far away as possible from that and just bring us a different kind of content. That way, you've got both shows there for a reason. You get the political stuff on Colbert, you get that feel good stuff on Fallon. Both can exist, both great.

I'm honestly kinda surprised that Colbert is winning people over in such a mainstream platform. He openly shits on Trump every single day and his guests frequently do the same.

Ouch and so true.

He fucked everyone over by treating Trump the way he did. He became persona non grata for life that day - and I'm someone who actually enjoyed a lot of the musical numbers he did, for example.

Yes and now consists of Carson introducing other people who do the interviews and introducing the bands. Dude does maybe 10 to 15 minutes of actual work for that show. Probably films a whole week's worth of shows in an hour. The show isn't great by any means but the guy just keeps his mouth shut, doesn't rattle any cages and keeps that chill 2 am spot.

Wasn't Stephen Colbert like way behind a while ago? Guess whatever he's doing is paying off. I love the guy so good for him.

Arguably some of the best years of the Daily Show (and when Colbert Report just got started) were during the Bush years. I've always seen Colbert late night as just an hour long version of the Report so it makes sense he's killing it right now with all this prime comedy material.

He actually gives really good interviews too.
