I'm on AT&T and want to order an S8+ for myself and use AT&T's $750 credit towards another S8/S8+ to get my wife an S8. If I'm gonna go through Best Buy to get the additional $100 off, does anyone know the answer to these questions?

  • Do you have to order in store? Gonna go in tonight if it is, but if I could order online now that would be nice.
  • Can you preorder both at the same time, or do you have to wait for some sort of promotion form to order the second one using the credit?
  • Do both phones get the free VR headset/controller/game pack?
If not, I'll try to add details from my experience after I go in to Best Buy tonight.

*edit* for bullet 1 I meant can you order online and get the AT&T + Best Buy deal, or is that in store only.

Please let me know your experience as my plan is to do the same (but I'll be moving from T-Mobile to AT&T).

Reading that the facial recognition unlock is really good, so I'm hoping that's true because I agree with you.

only if it uses infrared or something (same for the iris recognition) as otherwise it won't work reliable or at all under low/no light.
Same with sunglasses, hats etc.

Fingerprint sensor is just more usable under almost all conditions (gloves, water I think too).
Facial recognition is also not really safe at all.

As a lot of people have already said - I'm a former Android'r, now iOS, zero intention to switch back, but that is a damn nice screen.

Control strip as part of an extended screen + haptic is what apple have been rumored to do for a year or so, so they've pre-empted Apple's anniversary redesign.

Appreciate less bezel, hate pixels curving over the edge of the screen with a passion though.

The finger print area placement is terrible. I'll either so the gesture unlock or the face unlock.

Has there been an explanation for the funky aspect ratio? This is maybe the only Samsung phone that has impressed me with its design, but what's up with the super tall screen? They trying to push this for the future? Is it meant to improve usability?

Hands On With Samsung's Galaxy S8 and S8+: Taller Screens and Slimmer Bezels
Anandtech said:
Both Samsung and LG cite market research for this new display direction: People want larger screens that can show more content, but they also want phones that are useable with one hand and can fit in their pocket. The taller screen fits more content, so less scrolling, but keeps the phone narrow, so it’s easier to wrap your hand around.

Both S8 phones incorporate another emerging design trend: rounded display corners. Where LG’s G6 is using an LCD panel that actually has rounded corners, it appears Samsung is using a rounded bezel to cover the S8’s still sharp-cornered display. This avoids the aliasing that’s evident in the G6’s corners, producing a much smoother, nicer looking effect. While my time with the S8 was limited, it appears that TouchWiz and Samsung’s apps were redesigned to account for the rounded corners: Backgrounds extend the full height of the display and visual elements are still displayed along the top and bottom edges without getting cut off...
Narrower is key imo. I have average/small hands and don't enjoy using the iPhone 6 with one hand; even more so on the 6s/7 I have trouble using 3D touch in the upper half of the screen with one hand...

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
How fast after paying off a payment-plan phone on AT&T does your upgrade eligibility re-establish?

I have an iPhone 7 now; would be interested in paying it off, selling it, and taking on a new payment plan for the 8+. Is it instant or does it take a couple weeks?

Got to try them at my O2 store today, both the S8 and the S8+.

I'm really not sure about it, it looks fantastic with so much of the front being a screen however i think they went the wrong way around with it. Rather than increasing the screen to fill more of the bezel and getting the weird aspect ratio, i feel they should have reduced the bezel instead and kept it towards the 16x9 aspect ratio (much like the Mi Mix) - but i recon I'd be in a minority on this.

The fingerprint sensor really isn't in a nice area for me, on the S8+ its just to high up but its a bit more acceptable on the S8 (but still not a nice location) - however the face/iris unlock is fast, so I'd likely use that instead anyway.

Its tempting, but £680 is a lot of money for it and its just not a big enough upgrade over the S7 (except for that screen).

Give at&t a call. I'm pretty sure they would be happy to take more money from you lol.

Anyone know where you can test a s8 in a demo kiosk in the US?

That's really interesting. Does that mean that every other app will actually display content on those edges that are covered by the rounded bezels and thus not visible to the user or has Samsung made software tweaks to avoid that?

Pre-ordered through T-Mobile this morning. Not sure how phone pre-orders go, as this is my first time doing it, but do they usually arrive before in store dates or is it gonna get here the 21st?

Just completed my pre-order. I'll be jumping from an iPhone 5S to the Galaxy S8. The phone I had prior to my iPhone 5S was a Galaxy S5.

I am excited to mess around with the Gear VR.

Just out out the Samsung store... my God the phones are beautiful.

Colour wise I'm definitely going for the black option.

Size wise.... The S8+ is so easy to hold in comparison to other big phones but it still seems slightly too big. That being said the S8 seems too small even though it's bigger than my S6...

I have no idea:/

Some early battery comparison with the s7/s7 edge based on some battery stats by samsung.

https://www.sammobile.com/2017/03/30/how-samsung-battery-stats-galaxy-s8-s8-plus-compare-s7-s7-edge/

It's not bad some areas the s8/s8+ do better, in some areas they are slightly worse off. I think overall battery will be very similar to it's predecessors.

I can understand people being disappointed because of battery life not being pushed forward. But if these comparables happen to be accurate, this is good news to me because the expectation was for the battery life to be worse. Now we may essentially be getting the same battery life, on a bigger display and better performance. Sounds good to me. This is how it was for Apple for years - always constiently solid battery life for a day when is use with really good idle times. You won't see that same kind of bitching that people are doing here. Just look at the comments there, lol.

People are stupid.

I dont get people that are not happy with one day of battery life. Dont they sleep? I have my charger next to my bed, which is the place where I go... every night. And with the arrival of quick charging, if you use too much juice midday, half hour of charge vices you lots of battery and you are safe again. Not to say portable batteries that are super cheap nowadays (people that pay 850 for a phone cant pay 20 for that?).

I remember the note 7 was it came with a free gear vr or something? Has anyone seen any cool equivalent deals for this?

Can someone clarify this functionality, please? Is this similar to the iPhone 7's raise to wake feature, where you can simply lift the phone and the lock screen will pop up, without having to touch scree/button?

the galaxy phones use an amoled screen so instead of having the entire screen turn on like an iphone which uses IPS displays, amoled only illuminates those pixels at very low power usage. so time and notifications are always on the display.

Most impressive thing to me about these phones is screen to body ratio. It's really amazing what Samsung achieved here. Just look at this:

sizenhsoa.png

Pixel XL: 5.5"
Galaxy S8: 5.8"
iPhone 7+: 5.5"
Galaxy S8+: 6.2"

i don't usually like samsung phones because of the cheap plastic feel, but the display is amazing.

will the batteries explode though.

Without touching it yet, I can damn near guarantee the S8 feels more premium than my iPhone 7; and I say that as a hardcore Apple fanboy.

The S7 Edge was already far and away from a "cheap plastic feel."

Pixel should be embarrassed about those bezels.

The gigantic bezel is really my only complaint with the Pixel XL. I went with it because it had the best fingerprint sensor (slightly better than the Note7, miles better than the S7/S7E), and it removed a lot of the Samsung bloatware that was on the S7/S7E/Note7 making for the slickest experience.

I'm very interested in the S8, as it has a bigger screen than the Pixel XL while shrinking in size. That's incredible. I'd like to see the revisions Google makes to the Pixel 2, though, because the evidence points to the Pixel being one of HTC's projects being rushed out the door prematurely with a new name.

I ended up not going. After reading through the fine print on AT&T and the slickdeals thread, it turns out the AT&T BOGO deal is only good if you're adding a new line so it wouldn't work for my wife and I considering we both have existing lines.

I'm still going to go tonight and order the S8+, i think.

You should know that comparing screen diagonals can be misleading. The Galaxy S8 5.8" screen has a smaller screen area than a 16:9 5.8" screen. This is because as you stretch the screen's aspect ratio, the diagonal gets larger.

Reading material:
Android Central - In an 18:9 world, we need a new way to quantify screen size
The Verge - We're gonna need Pythagoras' help to compare screen sizes in 2017

This is why TV and monitor manufacturers loved the transition to 16:9; they could sell you less screen with a bigger number on it. And why I think most if not all smartphone manufacturers are gonna follow LG's and Samsung's suit this year with this 18:9 stuff.

Not to take anything away from the amazing screen-to-body ratio, btw.

I know all this. But it's still more screen in same or smaller body compared to these phones and basically any phone you want.

Screen to body ratio is impressive.

Good. I just thought I'd mention it because not everyone is aware, I think.

I agree screen-to-body ratio is amazing. 84% compared to iPhone's 66%, that's massive.

Once you put on the case and start using pixel, you really never notice anything. Its just the best android experience you can get.

Nah. As someone who has two. There are nice things about them, but they are also missing some pretty big bits of functionality and they're pig ugly tbh.

Oft hope is born when all is forlorn.
And yet One Plus 3t is a faster phone that now has Google Assistant...

Define faster. Opening 10-12 app at once as fast as possible that you see on YouTube comparison videos? or everyday realistic use case?

Because Pixel is the only phone beside Apple device that I thought is super responsive. It just sticks to my finger.

It's hard to believe how strong a run the S7 had... over a year, and I just got a new firmware update a couple of days ago. Even better I should be ready for an upgrade in a few months, so this thing should actually be pretty cheap by then.

Narrow sucks cause apps and content aren't designed for this aspect ratio.

Your essentially saying either stretch the image or throw up some black bars on a ton of apps. If they are just gonna throw up black bars when I watch a YT video or play hearthstone then I'm actually not getting a bigger usable screen. It's just wasted black bar real estate.
