This can only mean his approval will go lower.

I am very sure his popularity overall will go higher however it will be "military popularity" which is fickle. If the bombs stop, they will revert. He is damaging his own cult to buy some time. If the GOP get Gorsuch in he knows they will consider eating him alive. This will put them off.

They could be Russian trolls.

Russians were at the base, he warned them, so did he just attack a empty base?

Attacks on military bases primarily target military equipment not necessarily military personnel.

But even so, there would be syrians military on a Syrian military base as well. Rumors are that there were Hezbollah forces as well, but those are unsubstantiated.

The US government is being very careful with its wording. In effect, they have so far:

  • Called for the removal of Assad.
  • Used airstrikes against "the use of chemical weapons", but not against the regime itself. Important distinction.

The White House doesn't want this.

Watching CNN right now and Mark Hertling says that Russia very well has the technology to shoot down our missiles, but chose not to. A lot of stuff is up in the air.

I do have a question to my fellow posters. How come everyone was down for taking out Assad, but when action is taken everyone is against it? What am I missing. He isn't leaving through negotiations. It would have to be, well, war.

Nobody cared about Libya or Syria in the US, not even when Assad gassed people the previous time. People really don't like seeing the US getting involved in this stuff since Iraq. The very reason Obama couldn't carry out strikes is because people didn't follow the whole "we are outraged" media spin. Even Michelle Obama told him not to get involved, not to arm the rebels.
I don't think you can really compare the Obama situation to this. The GOP would have fought him regardless. His own party was/is a mix of people who actually think, but wander between "we have to help the children" idealists and history reading pacifists.

Trump on the other hand has a fucking Muslim hating machine behind him, in addition to the idealists who think the us can somehow fire guns that only hit bad guys. He'll have plenty of support.

Hopefully. Things would be about a million times worse if Russians were killed.

See and people don't realize how cunning Russia is. After the Turks downed their jet. They waited. They initiated economic sanctions that has Erdogan come begging. And then they plotted and waited months before they bombed and killed three Turkish soldiers and wounding others saying it was a mistake.

As we are posting, Putin, Defense Ministers and Generals are plotting something. They will not tolerate another Libya with Syria. What that is remains to be seen.

This might actually start another world war. This is incredibly serious, this egomaniac is not only responsible for the deaths caused as a result of these strikes but also the immense repercussions of them. I don't think the US is ready for another war.

For all of you in Syria stay strong and stay safe. For all you Americans, demand that your leader gets Congrwssional approval before starting a war! This buffoon can't just order strikes whenever he feels like it, and that should be made crystal clear!

Warning Russia in this case is a good thing. The worst possible outcome of a strike like this is heavy Russian casualties that puts us in a situation where people will be calling for nuclear war.

Oh please. It is insane though that at the height of the Cold War generals on both sides were seriously behind the idea of complete nuclear holocuast.

Chemical warfare can not be tolerated, but I hope this was the right course of action.

It's too bad you edited out your UN army brokering a ceasefire idea because I was going to laugh, and laugh, and laugh my heart away while quoting it.

This is why armchair Generals don't work everybody.

Makes me wonder if the most damning Trump-Russia stuff is about to come out, and Trump is preemptively going all out to prove he's not a puppet.
I wouldn't put it past him at all.

The Russia leaks seem strategically timed up to now. This might distract for awhile, but unless Trump is planning more action, it'll only be news for so long.

Tillerson says Syria most likely used Sarin gas on Tuesday:

Sarin is an organophosphorus compound with the formula [(CH3)2CHO]CH3P(O)F. It can be lethal even at very low concentrations, where death can occur within one[7][8] to ten minutes after direct inhalation of a lethal dose, due to suffocation from lung muscle paralysis, unless some antidotes, typically atropine and an oxime, such as pralidoxime, are quickly administered.[5] People who absorb a non-lethal dose, but do not receive immediate medical treatment, may suffer permanent neurological damage.

Fuck Assad. I'm 100% on board with this attack.

And Fuck Russia if they enabled this shit.

I have no clue about the dynamics about what's going on Syria, but I still don't get why the fuck Assad used nerve gas to attack people?

Is there some strategic reason he'd do that beyond being a murderous psychopath or what? It seems like just doing it to be a crazy asshole isn't worth it seeing the shit that ends up dropping on them.

By itself? nah.

Well this attack isn't going to take down Assad.

Most people are just worried about escalation.

I'm pissed off at the absolute hypocrisy of Trump. He felt compassion after seeing the dead bodies, but doesn't want to take these people into our country to escape that mess? Fuck him.

Did you take up smoking today?

We always act all alarmist about anything Trump does. What's up with y'all trying to shame people concerned about the same Trump initiating all the Syria shit that's been bubbling for a while now?

I can't keep replying to the same post anymore.

Watching the reports, I'm not convinced Russia was in on this.

Russia/Syria having the capability to shoot down our missiles might explain why we fired...well, so many of them.

EDIT: Apparently, the missiles didn't hit the airfield. All these missiles were aimed at the base.

Starting to understand how someone felt in the summer of 1914, or when the reichstag burned.

We live in interesting times. You don't want to live in interesting times.

ok, super commercial-grade-tin-foil hat time, but what if russia decided to throw Assad under the bus in order to try to legitimize trump
It's actually a possibility I've been thinking about. Since Russia released a message telling us 'not' to do it before right before we did, but did nothing to stop it even though they could've. It kind of feels like this is to sway people on Trump and Russia to me, especially with more info coming in and how many times Syria has fucked up with Russia.

"Restraint? Why are you so concerned with saving their lives? The whole idea is to kill the bastards. At the end of the war if there are two Americans and one Russian left alive, we win!" - General Thomas S. Power head of Strategic Command during the height of the Cold War.
