Nintendo Direct on April 12 (3PM PT, Switch/3DS, mainly Splarms)

There are always announcements in worldwide directs, even if their focus is on a particular game or a specific release window.

Show off handheld mode for ARMS, Nintendo. No handheld mode, no buy. I've already thrown away my dock.

No need to show that, it'll certainly support both handheld mode with standard controls and table top mode with separate joycons on each hand and motion controls

Do you think we would get a teaser for Smash for Switch? or would they going to save it for E3 or future event?

If anything, we could get Inkling for Smash trailer if we are going to see any smash trailer this Wednesday. There is no way that I would expect to see anything smash-related this time.

I'm not so much expecting it, more just hoping. But I think that Nintendo would have been (still possible but unlikely) wise to release a Smash port with a new character or two, few new stages for Switch BEFORE EVO in July. If they plan to do that, they should start hype now. Show a trailer for Inklings or Ice Climbers this Wednesday and have more info later. That's my dream.

I think it's a bit too soon for a new Super Smash Bros game. Other than the N64 original, Smash Bros games are generally 6 to 7 years apart, and Wii U/3DS weren't even three years ago at this time, so I think we've got a bit more time left.

We are all expecting Super Smash Bros. Turbo Championship Edition here.

Does anyone expect a Smash game that isn't just an enhanced port of the Wii U version at this point?

I wonder if they'll address any critiques from the Testfire. Like the refresh rate or how useless some of the specials felt.

I don't want to see the motions controls. I need to see people play this game without the motion controls.

I did the opposite, threw away the handheld once I got it. I've got a pro controller so I'm all good. I have had some sync issues though and also the hdmi doesn't seem to send the video signal to my tv. ah well, I'm sure Nintendo will release an update that addresses this.

I could see myself doing the same, thats why im holding out for nintendo to just make a home console version of the switch with none of the screen or portability or joycon bullshit packed in. Just give me a box with a tx1, 4 gigs of ram and usb 3.0 that lets me add external hardrives. Charge me 150-200 for it or 250 with botw packed in and just include a little disclaimer that says "Some games may require joynscons" or something like that. Call it a day and watch the money flow in. Still keeping my figures crossed that this becomes a reality a year from now when switch sales begin to slow down.

yeah my post was a joke ;p

Oh. Lame. I'd rather an all-new Smash game than the same game I already played three years ago.

What would be the difference? They can easily just use Smash 4 as a base, add in all DLC + few new characters/stages and call it a day. Maybe even add a neat little campaign mode and give it a new name. That'be much more economical than building a new Smash game from the ground up, and would most likely generate the same amount of hype and sales.

Stop it people :-)

They say it's mainly Splatoon 2 and ARMS and GAF goes: Pokémon, smash, rocket league, Mario, and and and....

Relax 😂
Yeah it's always good to just focus on what they clearly outlined and not expect anything else. However when Directs were in full force during the Iwata years, they released a Nintendo direct every other month. Each one would be focused on the games releasing the next few months but they'd usually include a few updates on big titles releasing a little further out. Also usually sneaking in a new title or two that releases in the next 6 months. I don't know and won't expect them to do the same for this direct. I'd expect updates on the two new fire emblem titles releasing this year over Super Mario Odyssey. I feel like they would discuss Pikmin 3DS as well. I could see one new game anouncement for a Switch title releasing late summer - fall and something for 3ds as well.

I'd be genuinely mad if Smash 5 came in so early. Mad. That is mainly for two reasons: first, the last game has a lot more to offer. It's such a well-made game that trying to top it so soon after its release is a pity. Second, I want to see a new Sakurai game. He was given the opportunity to direct a new Kid Icarus game and he created a freakin' masterpiece. If Uprising is any indication for his current design sensibilities, I want to see him on more such projects.

Smash 4 needs a couple new characters, a fresh coat of paint, and a few single-player gimmicks to satisfy returning players. A new director can design the new single-player features and Sakurai can oversee the process from afar while working on his next 10/10 game.

For many reasons (not all) not applying to Arms though.

Huh? The main issue persists: you stay in a confined area and do the same (fight). Most players want to roam around in an interesting environment. At least that's why I find fighting games (incl. Punch-Out) pretty boring; it's too repetitive. Yes, you have all the same characters, but in the end it always boils down to the same thing.

If they had the gameplay system from ARMS in an adventure game where you'd need to run around and fight enemies, that would be truly awesome.

the fuck are you talking about? we know since day one you can play it traditionally instead of motion controls

They've already confirmed a number of times that you can you use button controls.

Also, I hope the dock comment is a joke, because that would be pretty stupid.

I know they confirmed but we still haven't seen how it works, it might be button controls while still on TV mode. I just want to see how it plays on handheld.

Yeah it was a joke, but it's something I could totally do. I didn't throw it away but it's still in the box, probably will stay that way.

I honestly don't get the logic of people wanting a "new" Smash, over updating 4. Like, what would that accomplish other than to have the dev team remake every character all over again, and start another multi-year news drip feed where people complain because their favorite character from 4 hasn't been announced yet...

I'd much rather have them use 4 as a base, and add a bunch of QoL enhancements and maybe a new character or two TBH

New stages, maybe a proper adventure mode as in Melee again? There are many reasons why'd one could want a new game instead of an updated port. The roster probably isn't the main reason and I wouldn't care if they just ported that.

The main reason why most normal people don't want to play fighting games is because you have to learn obscure controls and combos for an extended period of time and they don't want to do that. You can observe this very easily when someone just mashes buttons and loses interest in 15 minutes.
They don't even want to play with someone who knows how to play because they can't get close.
Here it doesn't apply. That's why the game even exists, it's trying to be a fighting game anyone can enjoy, same as punch out, but more dynamic and fun.

It's really the same thing as a 12 button controller vs wiimote.

No you were serious, I know you

I mostly agree, as long as they get it out this year... a port of the game is fine.

They could def. add better single-player modes... At the very least bring over the 3DS mode.

I'd hope for more than 1-2 more characters.

For a port?

Today's information dump suggests there's nothing coming, though they could certainly use it as an opportunity to explain Switch's online features.

Still, it would make sense for them to hype what is probably going to be their top-selling game this year as much as humanly possible.
