Nintendo Direct on April 12 (3PM PT, Switch/3DS, mainly Splarms)

Oh. Lame. I'd rather an all-new Smash game than the same game I already played three years ago.

The Switch isn't a major leap from the Wii U. What would anyone gain from a fresh start? They certainly couldn't match the amount of characters or content if they started again. Honestly they should have taken the same approach in the past with Melee and spared us the mess that was Brawl

New stages, maybe a proper adventure mode as in Melee again? There are many reasons why'd one could want a new game instead of an updated port. The roster probably isn't the main reason and I wouldn't care if they just ported that.

and they cant add the adventure mode to 4 because....????

i mean they added battle mode to mario kart 8

Anyone think there might be surprises in MK8DX still? Like some final character reveals or announcement of summer DLC tracks?

It comes out in two weeks seems like a good time to give it a final spotlight?

One can dream...

New stages or an adventure mode though I would say fits into "upgraded port" territory. When I hear "new game" that brings visions of redeveloping and slowly announcing previously existent characters, etc. like had to be done for Melee/Brawl/WiiU.

Yeah, that would be quite a waste.

So it's finally time for Golden Sun 4, I see.

I doubt that Camelot is in a state to make a good Golden Sun 4.

ARMS looks really interesting. Really hope it turns out well. Splatoon 2 is going to be good. Hoping for Virtual Console news, or maybe something related to Dragon Quest XI.

2 games I can't wait to hear more about. Love the graphics in Arms; hope Splat3n can measure up on that front.

I'm not so sure, I think they just want to quickly get Mario Kart 8 on Switch while resolving its main criticism (battle mode). MK8 is a brilliant games that a lot of people didn't buy simply because it was on Wii U. There isn't much need to expand it any further, there's already a ton there if you've never played it before.

Haha, what?

I demand a explanation for this whimsical fiction!

Looking forward to seeing more of ARMS. Probably my most anticipated original Switch game after Bomberman. If there will indeed be a Smash port this year, I expect Nintendo to show it at E3, not in this Direct.
BTW, I haven't been following the 3DS at all in the last year, what popular titles are still in the pipeline for it?

I feel like they need to do a lot of work to make Arms look like a legit 60 dollars game. A story mode, a LOT more characters, plenty of cool secondary modes, robust online... Seems like the bare minimum.

Pikmin probably and leftover localizations.

Edit: I forgot about Ever Oasis, we haven't heard anything about that game in a while.

Depends on how you'd define popular. The most popular game announced so far is Fire Emblem Echoes and it's releasing next month. Otherwise there's that sidescroller Pikmin spin-off and Ever Oasis, I guess.

I honestly don't get the logic of people wanting a "new" Smash, over updating 4. Like, what would that accomplish other than to have the dev team remake every character all over again, and start another multi-year news drip feed where people complain because their favorite character from 4 hasn't been announced yet...

I'd much rather have them use 4 as a base, and add a bunch of QoL enhancements and maybe a new character or two TBH

On topic: I hope ARMS turns out well. It looks like it could be the kind of fun "summertime game" that the original Splatoon was a couple of years ago.

You don't understand why people want a new game? Seriously? Not everyone is impatient and needs a little bit of new content immediately. Maybe people want more than just 1 new stage and 1 new character, and are willing to wait a few years for that.

Arms was the most fun I had at the Nintendo preview event. Granted, that's a great venue for its gameplay, but my friend and I went back 3 times over the course of a few hours.

Welp, there's nothing for me to look forward to regarding the 3DS then, other than the titles I already want to play on it. A shame I lost my 3DS a few years ago, I'd probably be done with it by now :(

Fire Emblem, a series I couldn't give 2 shits about. Will still rebuy a 3DS because I need to play some titles on it, primarily the latest Pokémon titles.

Fighting games are a relatively niche genre.
As a big fighting games fan who is looking forward to ARMS, it slightly, just barely fits the definition of your typical fighting game, I wouldn't put ARMS in the same niche category to be honest. It'll probably have a wider reach.

Yeah, game looks super fun.

Even though you can trace it's lineage to Virtual-On, Punch-out, Wii Boxing, etc., it seems like one of the more interesting concepts to come along gameplay wise in a good while.

If Splatoon 2 is not 1080p docked that's pretty disappointing. Doesn't look very different from Splatoon on Wii U. Not that we'll get a confirmation in this Direct... just a general comment.

Stop it people :-)

They say it's mainly Splatoon 2 and ARMS and GAF goes: Pokémon, smash, rocket league, Mario, and and and....

Relax

I feel like they always say "focusing on..." and then announce other stuff.

I see what you did there. ;/

I'm pretty excited and curious about both ARMS and Splatoon 2, so even if this direct was just a new trailer and release date for both, I'd be a happy camper. That they're admitting even more will be there is intriguing and icing on the cake. People expecting announcements of big-name games this close to E3 are kidding themselves though. Maybe a small eShop game or two if there's anything new announced.

I'm hoping they announce that every weekend from now until launch will be a Global Testfire weekend. I really want to play more Splatoon 2

I guess on the 3DS side we might get; Ever Oasis, Piikmin, and Fire Emblem. Hoping for a MH Stories or MHXX announcement.

Are there amiibos for female Robin?
Apparently that's the case from the leak of the latest FE game or whatever (I'm not a fan of the series, dislike it a bit, actually).
Edit: I read Corrin instead of Robin. Stupid series with similar names between characters and stuff.

Yeah, I don't think Nintendo will drop big names in this Direct, a few small surprises? Maybe, but the big stuff I expect to come at E3.
METROID PLEASE AND SMASH PORT!!

That and the fact that the game plays better with the gamepad, is quite disappointing. Yeah not really excited for ARMS either. Hopefully Virtual Console is out soon and they put a ton of games on it.

I think it's a bit too soon for a new Super Smash Bros game. Other than the N64 original, Smash Bros games are generally 6 to 7 years apart, and Wii U/3DS weren't even three years ago at this time, so I think we've got a bit more time left.

Well, Dr. Toto said that Smash for NX is in development (he tweeted it in Jan 2016 so I presume that that's when they may start their development) and he presumed that Smash NX is going to be a launch title. Dr. Toto haven't been wrong with his sources and rumors so far, and he have a reliable source.

I don't think Smash for Switch is going to be a launch title but I think it's going to be out by next year. During Jan 2016, Sakurai already commented that he would have a new project ready for him so we don't know if it's Smash-related or a brand new project. Also he commented that he bought a robot figurine so he could use the gun for his upcoming project.

Before people going to mention that Sakurai is on vacation. He already clarified that he's taking a breather, rather than a break.

If Sakurai chose to work on something else new. It don't meant Smash Bros is out of question, since it's plausible that Smash for Switch might be in the work, with Sakurai in small capacity, or without Sakurai, like Sakurai stay in position via Producer or so. Also the gun that he just purchased, I wonder if it's for new game project, or would it be used as prop for Inkling moveset animation concept for Smash Bros project? (Source:SourceGaming, Sakurai's GDC 2008 powerpoint)

I know it's pretty much everyone's question with upcoming Smash project? Is it enhanced port with new contents? or Is it going to be Smash 5? No one knows. It's a complete new situation for Sakurai and the fans, since Wii U kinda ended early. I meant Sakurai actually made Melee like two years after Smash Bros (64). If Dr. Toto is right about Smash for Switch being in development, then the development already went on for 14 months. However it's plausible that the development is complete and Nintendo is sitting on it so they could wait for a right time to announce and release.

Are there amiibos for female Robin?

The leak of FE Echoes: Shadow of Valentia contained data and silhouettes for all of the FE Amiibo, and it included a silhouette for both a Male Corrin and a Female Corrin, which was NOT the case with Robin. This is in addition to the fact that some sort of product registration (not entirely clear on what this is, but I remember the thread about it) from Nintendo showed that they were preparing 4 new amiibo, despite there only being 3 characters with announced amiibo coming (Cloud, Bayo, and Corrin). This is causing us to believe that the 4th amiibo is Female Corrin.

It's not like they're going to say something like "Stay tuned for the upcoming Nintendo Direct, where we reveal Final Fantasy XVI, Metroid Dread, and Mother 4". They're just grounding it in already known announcements

I want info on phone app and paid subscription.

Wait, the phone app isn't out yet? I don't have a Switch so I ignore a lot of things about the console, but what's the online functionality looking like as of today? What about chat, messages, multiplayer, lobbies, invites?

Useless specials? All 4 specials have use when used correctly.

Only the jetpack distinctly felt right: powerful and easy to use with an obvious drawback. Splatdown was too weak (needs larger AoE,), the missiles and the Stingray were too slow. Stingray should have a turn speed closer to the heavy splatling.
