You joke but this is basically how the famous (?) January 23rd Direct went in 2013 and that was the first post-Wii U Direct, iirc.

I wasn't on NeoGAF at the time, but digging up the thread for that Direct makes for a hilarious skim. You have all this pre-Direct hype about Monolith (and recall that Xenoblade is a very recent memory at this point, especially in NA), with a few stray rumours about a Good-Feel "Yoshi's Land", and excitement for any word on the status of Bayonetta 2 (which hadn't been talked about since the exclusivity bomb dropped, if memory serves). You have a few measured reminders to keep expectations in check, since most of those long-term prospects would probably be saved for E3 and there was no reason to expect much more in the short term than a trailer for Lego City.

Then around page 60, the action begins. People get antsier by the minute when Nintendo leads with Miiverse and an OS update, and they're not much happier to hear about VC when it's confirmed to be a drip-feed with an upgrade fee, the same outcome we all dread (yet expect) today with the Switch. Promises of Smash/Kart/3D Mario at E3 are welcome, of course, but E3 is half a year away and these titles are easy to shrug off as a given. But then the combined might of W101, Bayonetta, a tease of Yarn Yoshi, an even fainter tease of SMTxFE, the earliest hint of the direction of what would become BotW, and Wind Waker HD pile up and turn this into a made-for-GAF fiesta like the TLG/FF7/Shenmue combo years later. Then X shows up and the place explodes.

(Much of that wouldn't show up until 2015 and beyond, and I think Nintendo took the wind out of the sails of their 2013 E3—already burdened by the perception of "dropping out" to do a video-only show for the first time—by pre-announcing Smash/Kart/3DW so far in advance. But you can't blame them for doing their level best to stave off what they already must have known would be an extremely bleak early 2013, a drought that effectively killed the system before it got off the ground.)

We're not getting that this time, but I wouldn't complain if Nintendo did in fact lead off with an OS update and the VC.

I need a Switch Pokemon game

2 years ago, Pokémon Rumble World came out
4 years ago, Pokémon Rumble U came out
6 years ago, Pokémon Rumble Blast came out
8 years ago, Pokémon Rumble came out.

I think you may get your wish :P

Note: the above is not indicative of insider knowledge

I really hope we get a release date for Spla2n at the Direct. I need more games for my Switch and that testfire was incredibly good. The faster tempo compared to the first game is so much better.

I'd love to see Nintendo bring back Miiverse as an option for posting images alongside Twitter.

Would a SNES Remix work?

SNES Remix would be glorious...

To the one who said apps could be announced, you might be right about that, usually the itunes appstore updates on thursday so with the direct being on Wednesday/Thursday you could be onto something :)

I'm glad Nintendo has a direct happening so soon at least partly because it suggests that they recognize fans and Switch owners are hungry for new content. Even with 1 solid indie title each week, we are in a bit of a post-BOTW lull right now. Mario Kart is still too far away. The Switch needs some excitement and I'm personally hoping for at least one "available on the eshop right after this direct" type announcement.

Here are my hopes/expectations

35-48 minute Direct

Around 10 minutes of Splatoon 2
-Gameplay Modes
-Story
-amiibo
-Launch Date

Around 10 minutes of ARMS
-Gameplay Modes
-Story
-amiibo
-Launch Date

Around 15-28 minutes of everything else
-Virtual Console
-Pokémon spin-off (Pokkén, Rumble, Dungeon etc.) on Switch
-Pikmin 3DS
-Mario Kart 8
-Ever Oasis
-Possibly Fire Emblem Warriors trailer
-Zelda amiibo
-Localisations (Miitopia, Monster Hunter XX, Yo-kai Watch 2 Shinuchi etc.)
-Indie Sizzle Reel
-First Party Announcement
-Surprise #1
-Surprise #2
-Animal Crossing Mobile Direct announcement

Nothing major, but still good stuff.

Note: This is speculation/desire and not indicative of insider knowledge

I still mostly just want another UI update with a real activity log and maybe some new apps, lol.

Excited to get Arms/Splatoon release dates (give us that 1-2 May-June punch please!)

I'm not expecing anything as far as a huge game announcement with E3 less than 2 months away. Maybe a confirmation that Smash Switch will be a thing? Anything bigger you'd think they'd hold on to for now. Mario Kart --> Arms --> Splatoon is enough to keep them in the mix until then with continued rollouts of more console stock.

A best they'll include zedla dlc info. Can't see them announcing anything big with E3 coming up

Maybe a teaser for a new game that will get a full reveal at E3 will show up. For example, a 30-second glimpse of what Retro has been working on for the Switch.

I don't think any Switch games getting a retail release will be announced, considering E3 is around the corner, but I can see new 3DS game announcements (Miitopia localization, something completely new) and maybe a Switch game exclusive to the eShop that's out right after the Direct.

I hope we get VC announcements. I need to rebuy pokemon Snap already.

Watch the new game announcement be something for the 3DS :)

I actually think this is pretty likely. There's probably one or two more small games Nintendo has cooked up for 3DS while they phase it out.

For VC, there are certain DS games I would not rebuy, specifically Pokémon Ranger 2 and 3. Those games are heavy on the touch screen and I don't like...touching my Switch's screen. Unfortunately the screen protector that came in my case was shit. Maybe once I get a glass one id come around.

I'm really just wanting a lot of Splatoon 2 stuff.

I'm guessing this will be mostly if not all for already announced games, since E3 is pretty soon. Maybe 1 new game for each system.

I doubt they'll announce anything about the paid online until the very last minute.

If VC is also coming in Fall, I doubt they'll say anything about that either.

Definitely hoping for an ARMS testfire type thing, or at least something available to download immediately after the direct. Not gonna expect anything else significant in the way of games given what they've said, but I'd quite like a peek at what they're doing next with the OS.

Since E3 is right around the corner I wouldn't get my hopes too high. Other than more infos about ARMS/Splatoon 2 (release date, modes, characters etc.) I think we will see mostly MK8D, upcoming 3rd parties (i.e. SFII) and some additional indies. Still excited, tho and if they pull some nice surprises out of their hats I will take them gratefully, of course :)

I wonder if they're going to talk about the Zelda dlc at all. I'd like more details and the timing would be decent in the sense that most people are wrapping up BOTW now.

Only the "early adopters" on the Wii U, and the 2 million owners that got a Switch. I guess there will be at least the double amount of players who will wrap BotW up until E3.

I'm doubtful we'll get noticeable news aside from maybe a surprise at the end, but I hope they mention something about OS updates, so bare bones right now.

Virtual console, OS update and netflix/apps would be great.

I don't mind if they don't announce any big game reveals, I expect that at E3. Dates for ARMS & splatoon2 would be great, although I'm currently not in the market for either of them.

10 minutes on ARMS
10 minutes on Splatoon 2
40 minutes talking about the one year anniversary on Miitomo

Predictions :

- ARMS trailer + details about different modes, including solo, online etc. Release date : early June (8 minutes)
- Splatoon 2 trailer + details about story mode, new maps. Release date : mid-July (6 minutes)
- Zelda Breath of the Wild DLC Pack 1 details, release date announced (early August) (two minutes)
- Super Bomberman R DLC revealed, release date announced (early May) (one minute)
- Rayman Legends Definitive Edition details + release date (early June) (two minutes)
- Puyo Puyo Tetris footage + announcement of english demo, available right after the presentation (one minute)
- Super Smash Bros 4 Ultra Turbo Remix Deluxe announced, release date is fall 2017, missing amiibos are revealed alongside. (four minutes)

- Fire Emblem Echoes trailer + details about amiibo functionnality (two minutes)
- Pikmin 3DS is now Pikmin Electric Bogaloo, releasing this summer, will be compatible with existing amiibo (two minutes)
- Ever Oasis : release date is also summer (one minute)
- Miitopia localization announcement: release is early June (two minutes)
- One first-party announcement (I have no clue what it could be but I feel like there will be at least one) (two minutes)

Here it is. My reasoning is that they will mostly talk about summer games, and most of the announcements will be 3DS localizations (as they will want to focus E3 mostly on Switch). Smash 4 will be announced, as Nintendo showed that they don't want Wii U ports in their main events (like Mario Kart 8 DX was announced in a PR following the January press event).

This is pretty massive, how much do non-E3 directs tend to deliver? Can we actually expect anywhere near such an amount, nevermind the fact it is supposedly "mainly focused" on Splatoon 2/ARMS?

I don't think it's particularly massive, most of what I listed will be quickly passed after a few words.

Non-E3 Directs still have a lot of content. People seem to always forget this. Granted much of it is eShop or third party, but Nintendo do NOT do general worldwide Directs if there is nothing to cover.

Even though it's mainly focused on Splatoon 2/ARMS doesn't mean it's exclusively. Like my predictions say, I predict 10 minutes for both and 10+ minutes for everything else.

Every time a focus is given in a general Direct, it's seldom really the focus.
