The Surge - Behind the scenes

It's fair to not be into medieval fantasy stuff, but what do you find interesting about The Surge's sci-fi setting? Personally I don't really like the junkyard/factory look, and I think the large exosuits just look silly. The aesthetic is very mundane, low tier sci-fi - nothing really impressive though a couple of bosses looked neat but overall it just feels generic, lacking creativity. By that I mean, what really makes the style stand out compared to the hundreds of other sci-fi games? Not much I think, just like Lords of the Fallen.
Same. More of a general problem than anything to do with Surge specifically but never seen the whole exosuit concept executed where it doesn't look dumb/dorky.

I'd much rather just have a big complete set of badass Dead Spacelike armor or an actual mech suit.

Unfortunately,i'm not feeling it at all with the art direction..everything is just metal corridors and rooms.
I think i would have preferred actual robots instead of humans with Elysium-like armors.

but there are actual robots in this game lol. you need to watch more gameplay vids

Wait, is there visible damage and destructable limbs and shit? I love that kind of stuff.

Harder then Bloodborne and Nioh...? yeesh...is there a difficulty option at least lol...for me a 6 GB game in 2017 means short game, with the graphics I have seen of this so far...I mean c'mon, some patches are bigger then that in most games these days lol...probably a 6 hour game stretched out to more because its hard as hell...waiting for lenght and more impressions to see if I rent or buy this.

Since when has download size been correlated with game length? Especially with indie/mid-tier games

Size means nothing Rick ;) Look at Minecraft.

However, I don't expect great scores from this game, hope I'm wrong.

I remember just stumbling onto this game's store page and being surprised that I haven't heard of it before. I'll probably pick it up even since it looks like it does a lot of stuff I'll enjoy.

Just killed the 2nd boss a few hours ago.

This actually looks pretty good to me. A tad be repetitive with those leg attacks but seems pretty good overall. Its fast enough that you need to dodge quickly enough but the tells are long enough that you have that split second to dodge. Obviously I won't know until I get my hands on it but that seems solid to me in terms of combat especially with a boss. I think I'll probably stop watching too much more and wait for reviews.

Depends on what you mean with "great scores". Just like its predecessor, I expect the game to be in the 70-75 range, and I consider that a perfectly fine score. A good, solid, fun if a bit janky title.

Inescapable boss walls aren't really new to the genre. At least you can't sit on the other side of these ones and shoot arrows at the boss for three hours to kill it

ya for a long long time.
But not this new review code. Waiting on it. Supposedly soon
I hope it's delivers. None of the Soulslikes have really engrossed me like Dark Souls and Bloodborne, but the sci-fi aesthetic and chunky combat looks so up my alley

I wasn't particularly interested in this one after hearing about how lackluster LotF was, but now that I've watched a few videos I think this one looks like it has a lot of potential. I like the weightier combat more reminiscent of Dark Souls/Bloodborne and I think the setting and combat hook of targeting different body parts could take it in some interesting directions.

I might hold off on getting this one for a while due to some Souls-like fatigue, but then again if reviews are good enough I'd definitely be down to support a game like this.

In regards to game length, developer "Netheos" wrote this on the Steam forum for the game

We're pretty bad at predicting playtime to be honest. Thing is that when we started development, we calculated with around 15 - 20 hours. Right now, it is more realistic to count between 20 - 30 hours for a normal playthorugh (20 - 25 hours if you really rush through). But if you really want to find each and everything it could easily be 40 hours as well. Even without NG+. So... uhm, kinda tricky to say the exact time.

Welp i'm pretty much sold, 20-30 hours sounds really good to me, PC version it is :)

It's a fucking digi-fog wall in a Souls clone with robots...it's funny, trust me.

There're only
5
weapon types in this game. And here's the video of every weapon types in action
One-handed, Staff, Heavy-duty, Single-rigged and Twin-rigged... and my favorite is Twin-rigged
!

Also there're only
3
armor set in this game that related to a trophy (not sure if there's more. But I don't think so). Each full set will give you a special effect.
RHINO set will increased your impact, LYNX set set will increased your attack and Liquidator set will give you elemental resistance.

Edit: Wait, the
Liquidator armor set
isn't relate to a trophy so there should be more than
3 armor set.

You can find a full trophy list here (Spoiler Alert).

Can't say I'm too exited to play gruff mc grufferson Warren.

Would have loved to have a character creator or a female alternate called Whitney or something.

This looks pretty cool and the PC version looks like it's gonna be well done. If it is I will definitely keep it in mind to buy if reviews and impressions are good overall.

Yup, played up past the first boss. Going to play through the second area before I really go in depth but, it's a much more solid game already than Lords, framerate seems locked at 60 on the pro as well. I'll be putting up a longer video with impressions later.

Also, harder than Nioh hands down. No attack so far can be block or dodge cancelled, so you have to really commit or pay the price. Feels like a next gen Cyborg Justice. Really dating myself with that reference I know lol.

There is a game I haven't heard about in a hot minute. Still its good to hear that the game has some decent difficulty and seems like a serious step up from Lords of the Fallen. Everything I've been seeing has been clicking with me far better than their prior game which I was though was ok. Its funny as I haven't had a chance to play Nioh and don't want to play it right after Yakuza 0 which I'm playing now so the Surge might be a good follow up in the same sub genre with a different setting and style.

I warched the first hour on his stream and came away pretty impressed. IMO the Souls games, Bloodborne, and Soulslike-ish Hollow Knight are the best in their genres. Nioh didn't click with me when I tried the demo

The opening of The Surge was surprising and unexpected for the genre IMO, and the opening area seemed nicely paced. Combat looked fast and weighty, and seemed to have some action game/brawler DNA. Gear progression seemed faster than Souls. The level design looked like it had some strands of Metroidvania, in how your opening area would be expanded with unlocked doors and gates

Hey guys! I ran that stream yesterday. Played a couple of more hours. Made a video with my full impressions. Absolutely no spoilers here in regards to story. Some very slight footage of the early sections. I will have a full video of the opening hour and the boss fight in full 1080/60 running on my PS4 Pro shortly.

If my energy in the video seems low, it's not indicative of how I feel about it. I just have a lot of medical issues and have impending tests to determine if the tumors in my head are benign or something much more serious. Would love to give it more energy, but that is all I can give for now. Hope you all enjoy, and so far, this game is a huge improvement on Lords of the Fallen.

Here was my Ni-Oh review so that you guys get a sense of where I come from with this genre. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vasrqArBOB8&t
