Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 |OT| Anyone can save the galaxy once - SPOILERS!

itwasTuesday

He wasn't alone.
I saw this today, quickly I want to say it was a top tier movie for 3d. Only one shot that I can think of did it do the sharp pointy thing coming straight at you scene and that was Yondu's arrow. The bubbles on ego, the forest, inside ego, all fantastic. The distorted faces were weird.

They forgot to have a plot the first half and just had running jokes. Some great moments and nice character work, but overall not as good as the first. Had the same problem as Iron Man 3 for me, after the previous movie was very connected to the rest of the marvel universe it felt weird to have this movie have nothing to do with thanos or the stones. Oddly disconnected.

I mean, did you watch the first half?

We learn that the team is freelancing, and then they get on the wrong side of their latest client and their asses are saved by Ego. Then Peter & co. go off with his dad while Rocket fixes their ship.

It's a pretty logical progression of events.

Nebula and Gamora are Thanos's daughters. I'm sorry you fell asleep and forgot that, but any film they're in automatically plays to the Thanos story.

Understated I think but I really liked how they played the reveal with Ego putting the tumor in Peter's mom. No exposition, no dramatics, no hesitation. Peter just immediately starts gunning him down. It was the perfect response.

Yeah I loved that. Suits what we know about Peter's character but also manages to build upon it without him needing to say a word.

It was 100% perfect, absolutely. Definitely the right move for the character.

I don't know much about comics, but something tells me the light isn't gone. Ego wasn't the source, he was just manipulating something that was already there. The light is probably the " Power Primordial", The Elder's of the universe version of The Power Cosmic. They tap into it by focusing on one all consuming goal, in this case Ego remaking life in his image.

I want the fucking Living Tribunal, The Eternals and the Real Celestials....

Celestials, Living Tribunal and Ego are my fav Marvel 1992 trading cards lol. So I got 1 of 3

Also The Sovereign are basically what would happen if Gamergate formed some isolated commune thanks to a billion dollar investment from Peter Thiel

jon bones

hot hot hanuman-on-man action

Baron Mordo has The Staff of the Living Tribunal
we saw a Real Celestial in GotG1

it's all coming together...

Run by a woman? already not possible

Opening scene:

Missouri, Earth, 1980.

34 years later.

Besides the whole started in 1980 and 30 years later time card, I believe Gunn said it took place a few months after the events of GotG

Oh yeah lol. I wonder what the intention was to set it a few months apart. To sell how the team isn't 100% clicking quite yet?
But Thor 2: The Dark World had an Infinity Gem in it.

Thor: Ragnarok will surely have an Infinity Gem and will be an inferior movie to The Dark World!

Really enjoyed it. Not sure how I would rate it compared to the first. I do have 2 gripes.

1. The Peter/Yondu relationship could have used a bit more development.
2. Half of the crew didn't have shit to do during the Ego fight.

Best line in the movie:
"I'm Mary Poppins Y'all!"

RIP Yondu

Best 3D movie I've seen.

I was super tired, so I fell asleep at a couple points in the middle. Ending was pretty emotional, and the movie had a great sense of humor. However, some jokes jumped the shark, I felt. Like, turds and Pac-Man.

Probably the best MCU movie to be honest. Fantastic realizations of cosmic Marvel concepts, and it had fleshed out writing and beautiful cinematography. Insane visuals, great action and dialogue.

Basically, I agree with Jay from RLM. A little too long and a little too predictable when it came to jokes and undercutting tension. I found it funny that the same thing he complained about was something Joss Whedon did when they couldn't think of another writer-director in the MCU.

Its biggest problem was that it didn't do anything for the MCU really. Some would say that's not really a problem, but it did stagnate the universe-building a bit (hinting at Adam Warlock isn't anything really). Which is fine.

Can we agree that the whole aesthetics part of the movie was awesome?

So much color everywhere! it was like a 80s-70s acid trip!
I want to inspect each scene of this movie on HD at home.

Gotta say I haven't seen a 3d movie since Avatar. No wait, Dredd.
And this one blew them both out of the water. I was kind of in awe at how amazing 3D IMAX was.
Saw it at the Chinese theatre in Hollywood and like I said, just blown away. Are 3D movies this good nowadays or is it just this one?

As far as the movie goes, I enjoyed it. Didn't think it was terrific by any means but decent. I haven't seen the first one so a few of the things might have been lost on me.
I thought the opening title sequence was the best part of the movie.

Also side note: did anyone seeing this in 3D think some of the scenes looked like they were miniture models? Like the opening scene where Kurt Russell is driving his car through the country side. It looked like it they were filming a model from far away. Must be an effect of the 3D

It was an above-average 3D job IMO, especially for MCU standards. GOTG (1), Ant-Man and Doctor Strange are the only other ones I actually prefer to watch in 3D.

Gunn probably didn't want to do a Whedon and have a years worth of character stuff happen entirely off screen.

That was the only part of the movie I'd say looked bizarre.

Dark hair, makeup, and that we don't see her for more than a few seconds made me think it was a cameo for her Thor 3 role.

Yeah, I drew the same comparisons as well. I knew it wasn't her but at the same time I was thinking... "Huh looks kinda like Blanchette's Hela there."

I finally saw this last night and I was blown away. I wanted to see it again tonight but I gotta wait until payday. Such an amazing blend of comedy, drama, and action.

The interactions between Rocket and Yondu were so good and I loved the characters arc that Rocket has in this movie. I was crying like a baby during Yondu's funeral.

Yondu's "I'm Mary Poppins" line gave me the biggest laugh i've had all year.

Best scene in the movie for me was when Yondu and Rocket go ham on the mutineers. The scene where the mutineers mistreat baby Groot made their deaths all the more satisfying. The shot of all the bodies falling while Mohawk Yondu and Rocket walk with swagger was just too cool.

Goddamn I loved this movie. James Gunn just raised the bar for Marvel movies and I'll be back day one for Vol. 3!

Those were so good!

Man, the Rocket and Yondu stuff was perfect.

Only thing I didn't like were the David Hasselhoff jokes, just super overplayed and not really funny or clever.

I actually thought they were pretty fun lol. It seemed rather fitting with the 80s focus plus as a Knight Rider fan I naturally enjoyed the surprisingly detailed mention of the show at the one part lol.
Also, Ego turning into him for a few seconds was too good.

It was actually some of the first unprovoked jokes toward the very beginning (after the Baby Groot opening sequence) I did feel felt a little too artificial, but the humor quickly got back in form as the movie ran.

One thing I didn't like was when Peter was getting ready to attack Ego, saying something along the lines of "You killed/This is for my mother! And my Walkman!"

I'm like, really Peter...

Just saw it, can't decide which I liked more. Ego was pretty great, and I definitely preferred the ending of vol. 2. First one I feel liked everyone was involved more throughout the movie when it comes to the action. Looking forward to watching these back to back though when it's out on bluray.
