So Pirates 5 : Dead Men Tell No Tales/Salazar's Revenge is out next week, any hype?

Gonna watch it even if only for Barbossa. Geoffrey Rush is so good in this role.

Well, this is getting weird. I rewatched Dead Man's Chest and liked it more than the first movie.

I suppose it's okay to have commonly-perceived "shit taste" every once in a while, eh? :p I misremembered the heck out of this movie.

I might see it, but not that excited. They haven't learnt that Jack should not be the main character still.

The only decent Pirates was the first one.

2 was certainly "decent."

Really guys, there's more to criticism than "shit" or "amazing."

Mark me down as one of those that liked DMC the best. I always thought it made clever use of elements of the first movie to "expand" its own lore. And Davy Jones is one of the genuinely memorable villains of the 21st century.

At World's End unfortunately fell to the "disappointing 3rd movie" curse, but they really should've left it at that. If nothing else everything ends tied up decently.

edit: you know I had no idea the two sequels had such low RT ratings.

I want this to be good. I'm not a blind fanboy, but I really want a great film after what we've gotten in the last ones.

The pirate film is so neglected as a genre that I'd like this to reignite it.

If you're in a piratey mood the best thing you can do for yourself is watch Black Sails.

I'll see it in theaters unless the MC/RT is under 40, I loved the first movie. Its insane though the budget is over $320m, its going to have to do bananas to turn a profit. Also doesn't help all the on set rumors of Depp being extremely hard to work with and delaying production a lot, which must be crazy expensive on a movie like this.

Few screener posts in reddit are all very positive about the movie though.

The only downside I'd say is that the movies are a bit ad hoc and don't feel like a cohesive story is put together that keeps in mind future movies. A tv show in the vein of Black Sails but using POTC lore and its more mythical elements would have been absolutely fantastic.

That was actually my impetus for me making that post. The end of Black Sails left me hungry.

To see that show go from Skinimax to a really good watch was amazing. I'm hoping against hope that Pirates can perform a similar jump in quality.

I can't wait to see it, but I dress up as a pirate at Renaissance Faires for fun. So, I'm a bit biased. I hope it can live up to be at least as good as the second movie. The 4th was really bad, and that is coming from someone who saw it for free.

No, Dead Man's Chest is the best in the series, so you're good. 👌

Dead Man's Chest is the Pirates movie they really wanted to make. At World's End was the finale that everyone thought they wanted to make but no one knew how to.

DMC was easily the best.
1 is a more solid movie but it feels like a test for the real thing.
Action and setpieces were better, villain was better/cooler, music was better , etc

Honestly the last 10~ minutes of Lone Ranger is the only thing to come near filling that POTC niche.

I thought the first was clearly the best. The rest of the trilogy became way too convoluted for no reason. The first was a straight forward adventure film and the others lacked that. The fourth was just an obviously uninspired cash grab.

Agreed. First is by far the best to me though I haven't seen the fourth at all.

The thread is going in the right direction now.

DMC is awesome.

And AWE, for all its issues, is still solid with some fantastic scenes.

Even the original is "only" at at 79% on RT. To me, that feels low considering it will easily go down as one of the great adventure blockbusters.

I honestly don't even hate 4...
I just have absolutely no clue what they were going for with it.

Its clearly a budget sequel and yet the most expensive movie ever made.

Man i'd love if Disney actually had POTC, live action Little Mermaid and possibly a live Peter Pan in the same universe with a similar tone, aesthetic, etc.

Damn, I just learned that this film spent nearly two years in post-production (and presumably had numerous reshoots). I have a strong suspicion that the critical reception will be mixed.

I liked the "Original Trilogy" of movies. Granted, I first saw them when I was still in school so I forgive a lot of flaws but even then the idea of continuing with the movies beyond it was just... why. I felt they were overdoing it and that "At World's End" had a perfect ending.

I watched the 4th one years after and didn't really enjoy it. Not sure if it was because I grew up a bit but it had zero charm and did everything the previous movies did but with less oomph or enthusiasm. One scene I still remember really enjoying was the Spanish march near the Fountain but that's pretty much it.

Cautiously optimistic about this one.

Really liked the first 3.

Then the 4th rolled around and everyone said it was crap, so I never really bothered, saw it on TV the other night and didn't mind it at all.

Will see this one when it hits bluray.

Kind of wish the whole Will Turner and Elizabeth characters were still around though.

Zero hype from me, looks like a tired studio movie to bring in some needed cash for Johnny Depp & Co.
Not really. Its actually a "reboot" of sorts. The studio brought in acclaimed director Kon Tiki Helmers to right the ship after just a downward spiral of past few sequels.
