DF: Gran Turismo Sport Beta vs GT6: A Generational Leap?

It's def a generational leap. Very interesting video, the game looks really good. Hope they improve the performance that extra bit and add skidmarks and better smoke effects.

One issue at the Nurburgring is that Trees have better shadows when you get closer to them (shadow pop in? or LOD pop in?) it's really distracting.

This will probably sound snobby, but, those of us who put a ton of time into both GT5 and 6 will absolutely notice the significant improvements between those two and Sport, but, fly-by viewers probably won't. I dread the comments section, already.

And thats exactly the problem with Gran Turismo.

Yup! I booted up GT6 last night and it's hard to believe how good it looks still but Sport just blows it away. Biggest improvement is lighting and trackside details.

I don't think this is snobby, I think this is exactly why DF made the video in the first place. Otherwise, comparing one game to its sequel, which is being built from the ground up to take advantage of the next gen of hardware, seems kind of ridiculous.

It definitely is a generational leap.

That said, it just goes to show how impressive the work with Driveclub and Forza/Horizon was.

All 3 of those titles, regardless of differences in simulation goals, look much better than GT at this point. Much better.

DF did it again. Well done.
It definitely is a generational leap.

DriveClub and Forza Horizon 3 are 30 FPS. That's unfair.

Disagree and I have platinum-ed DC.

Only one of those runs at 60fps. If they didn't look at least the same running half the framerate would be an embarrassment.

They halved the framerate. I'm not sure that's how you impress in this genre. :/

I'd argue PCars is a step above all of them. PCars 2 is also taking things up a notch:

It's a great time for racing games overall.

I don't think it's a generational leap at all, but I'm a casual GT player and to be honest I started to dislike the series with 5. To each their own I guess.

It's more to do with 5 & 6 looking so amazing than Sport looking dull. So your comment makes a lot of sense, not snobbish at all. It's obviously a generational leap to me and I didn't play 5 or 6

lol

I think Dave nails it in the first minute: GT's has always nailed recreating scenes with unrelenting realism to the best of its ability given the hardware.

It's a bit like people's reaction to oversaturated or poorly calibrated screens - the oversaturated display may produce eye-poppingly impressive colours, but only one of them is showing the hues designers or photographers saw on their screens.

Sure... but somehow i always feel these games take too long to make.
Scrap all that useless fluff.

I don't know. Bought a few GT games but i'm always so fucking bored after a few hours. It's sterile, it's no fun, and it has very little sense of speed imo. And then there were always the screeching tyres sounds and vacuum engine sounds.

It's a gen up, but it still looks absolutely dull as hell imo. And waay too jaggy. Jaggies should be a thing of the past in driving games. It's a shame Driveclub doesn't look exactly like the photomode.

I agree, but I also wanted to separately comment how well GT6 holds up for a PS3 game.

Also, I wholeheartedly disagree with the comment in the video that GT6 is better played in the 720p display mode. The game looked and played pretty well on my 4K TV. I was playing it right up till I got my Pro.

Have to admit I'm not impressed by the game (and I wasn't impressed by last gen's GTs as well) but this is definitely a leap, don't know if on the same level as last gen Uncharted to Uncharted 4 but it's a very significant leap regardless, based on this comparison I would call it a generational leap indeed.

GT at it's best can compete, given optimal track/car combinations that have had more effort put into them relative to others. But in general, GT has always been a bit more flaccid of a driving experience because of inconsistencies and the general feel of the cars (also includes stuff like the camera), not necessarily because of how great their lightings is.

I hope the periphery around PC2 is better this time around. I wanted to like it so much more than I did, but, the menus and campaign were absolutely dreadful. Introducing the game with, what felt like, endless kart racing was an abysmal choice.

Ps3 vs Ps4 Pro game
it better is

why not? looks good to me

That battlefield 4 thread at these new consoles launch will go down in gaf legend for the pop effect haha.

Well at least this stops idiots from saying it looks like a PS2-tier game. One would hope anyways.

edit: gosh dang it

The biggest problem is most racing circuits are boring to look at, from an aesthetic perspective. There's not much eye candy to show, and especially not when you're attempting to simulate real world circuits.

I think this is why the likes of DC and FH are held in much higher regard; it's easy to make visually impressive scenery for roads in comparison to actual racing circuits.

Lol, no they don't. GT Sport looks more realistic. It has the advantage of HDR though. Driveclub is close but way more aliasing.

I think a lot of people's reference point for PS3-era GT games was the trailers, which wasn't representative of how the game looked the majority of the time. The series in general has odd inconsistencies, but GTS is a big jump.

The tree shader and shadow pop-in is the lingering rendering issue I see in the current round of footage, which stands out on some tracks more than others. Otherwise, this is already a sharp-looking game. The IQ is super solid for a 60 fps title.

Yeah the pop in is kinda bad but the trees are one of the biggest improvements from GT6. They react organically to light and hide being flat very well. On GT6 you could tell trees were just a cross cross of flat textures.

I don't mean to be rude and I'm pretty sure there are a lot of improvement but this is now considered a generational leap?

Generational leap in my book is something like going from U3 to U4.

Look at the other gif and you'll see why it is. That comparison you quoted doesn't represent even the beta very well.

While it's a pretty nice improvement, I can't really as something that special, maybe because GT is trying to be as realistic as possible but overall feel is not that significant in my opinion.

Neo, I don't wanna be too harsh, but that particular gif is one of the least-representative and least useful comparisons for the two games, unless it's just to show that some tracks are done at different times of day.
