Ahh, I didn't realize Super was set between the Buu saga and the final episode of DBZ.
Here's the a Reddit post explaining it
DBZ
Age 774, September 7 : Shenron erases everyone's memories of Majin Buu.

Dragon Ball Super
Age 778: Gohan and Videl are married, and Videl becomes pregnant with her and Gohan's daughter, Pan.
Age 778, August 18: The events of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and Battle of Gods Saga take place.
Age 779: The events of Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ and Resurrection ‘F’ Saga take place.
Pan is born.
Age 780: The events of the Champa Saga take place. The God of Destruction of the sixth universe, Champa wants to have a tournament between universe seven for their Earth.
The events of Potaufeu Saga take place.
The events of the Future Trunks Saga take place.

DBZ
Age 784, May 7 : The 28th World Martial Arts Tournament takes place. Goku leaves with Uub to train him

Here's the a Reddit post explaining it

According to Xenoverse 2 this is off, Champa arc takes place at the end of 779.
This creates a weird issue though were the Dragon Balls were used in the Champa arc before they should have been able to. I think someone had an explanation for this, but I forgot it.

He hates Tenshinhan so much he let him stay just so he can get his ass kicked in seconds.

I was one of the four people on the planet excited for him, but he's literally been less than worthless

Same. All the Tien stuff has been hard to watch this arc. I'm hoping he's given an ounce of love in the tourney... but I'm not expecting it.

He's such a nonfactor it's not even funny. Instead of showing why he should be on the team they've done nothing but show him get embarrassed.

Their dedication to humiliate Tien is quite impressive though.

I think they are doing this to end the debate of Krilin being weaker once and for all.

I see no other explanation.

Man, I was hoping for Tien to pull through, but I'm definitely doubting anything happening now.

I desperately wish to be wrong, though.

Toriyama just really hates Buu lately for some reason.

I don't think it's that, but the problem is that he has nowhere to go with Buu

the Buu/Satan arc in the Buu saga is some of the best stuff Toriyama has done, but now he has painted himself into a corner. At most he can put Satan in danger, and Buu will go furious and save Satan, or the other way around. but he did both in the Buu saga itself so it is nothing interesting

and it will be hard to marry Buu, and Buu doesn't seem interested in Pan as a cool uncle, Piccolo style

so Buu is mostly just there. maybe they will reuse the GT idea of Uub fusing with Buu or something along that line, but right now there's not a lot Toriyama can do with Buu

Tenshinhan...dunno, they just gave him a girl to be around with after the tournament, a dojo, etc, so Tenshinhan can go new places. Tenshinhan is clearly past his peak but he is still a character that Toriyama can get some mileage from. he is severely outclassed, but like Gohan before, this may be a driver for more progress

Come on Elfly.

Tien has been outclassed for 3 decades now.

but before toriyama just forgot about his love interest and tenshinhan also kind of disappeared mostly

now suddenly a new girl and relevance in an arc? maybe toriyama has some new ideas for the triclops

I mean...even 17 got new clothing and a cool job, but his family was only mentioned and not shown. I think Tien is the only one in the team of the recruitment arc that saw a new supporting character introduced?

Yall are gonna eat crow when Tenshinhan is gonna kick absolute ass.
Shhh, let a man dream. If I keep saying it over and over it's gonna happen right? Worked for Slaythe and A17 returning.

I'm going down with this ship.

still thinking that Goku loses to Jiren and the final fight is Jiren vs some random ass remains of U7's team

prolly a tired Freeza, Piccolo and Krillin

Goku pretty much confirmed Gohan's fourth strongest at best when he told him not to worry about Frieza, because him and Vegeta could handle him
I know was Joking
Gohan had to ask Goku to transform while Goku did for 17 (even if it was vague how strong 17 is with both of them holding back) and Vegeta is forever destined to be 2nd place
How the hell was that a tank?
Because he's not a puddle even though Gohan was likely holding back not to cripple him let alone kill him

To be honest, I was thinking Gohan was stronger til that line myself.

He lived through that, hell he walked away from that.
I want to point out 17 hit Trunks like that, and Trunks didn't weather it as well as Tien

It's not like Gohan was trying to kill him or anything.

Since 1 night of training was enough for him to have Goku go SSB+KK to defeat him.
Why do people always gotta be ignoring the fact that Gohan's been training for over a year. The one night was to awaken his warrior spirit and get his Ultimate form back.

17 was a genocidal teen with attitude while Gohan was sparring and needs Tien to be the worf
