Metroid: Samus Returns (Mercury Steam, Metroid 2 reimagining, 9/15) announced for 3DS

That's factually incorrect though.

It's a very successful system and it would be a bad business decision to completely abandon it.

Guys, if the 3DS was dead, this game likely wouldn't even be happening at all. Instead, we get 2D and 3D Metroid. Be happy.
I don't think it should be completely abandoned. I understand the business rationale for releasing it on the 3DS in a crystal clear way. I'm saying that this game, and any new 3DS games in general should be releasing on both platforms to ease the transition to the Switch. The 3DS has been out since early 2011. It's time to move on.

The port begging shouldn't be surprising. The 3DS is archaic hardware that Nintendo themselves have effectively replaced with the Switch. I could understand the nonsense in expecting a portable game to be ported to home console for the sake of wanting, but I guarantee many Switch owners invested in the system with full expectation for it to transition Nintendo's own portable market to a new generation. Nintendo can parade around "it's a home console!" all they like; the Switch is just as much a portable through and through as the 3DS, and I feel some (like myself) would enjoy seeing very, very late generation 3DS titles supported by the system.

Maybe there's a worry that the lower quality assets will leave a sour impression on Switch users, but eh. Throw it up on the eShop rendering native resolution with some AF and AA and I'm sure most wouldn't mind.

This.

Environments looks... serviceable, gameplay looks good so far and I've never played M2. So I'm interested, hopefully it'll review well. :)

I demand AMR2 devs get a shoutout for their hard work. If they are secretly making the new Metroids with either 3DS or Switch that's another story. If not, they need recognition for their achievements first hand by Nintendo.

Meh, if they didn't use the existing 2D Metroid sprites it wouldn't even exist.

They should release a Salt and Vinegar edition of the Switch in the future. It would perfecfly represent the current owners of the system.

This and Prime 4 probably only exist because everyone was so pissed about Federation Force.

I think they said they've been working on this for over a year, so I have to imagine they started a bit after the game's 2nd showing when Nintendo thought fans were 'confused' over Federation Force. Reality was they didn't want Federation Force, they didn't ask for Federation Force, and they didn't buy Federation Force.

Gotta say the style of graphics they went with is not very flattering to the game. Not saying it will be a bad game or even out right ugly but I'm not a fan of things, it comes off as very bland looking in a weird way.

Checked out the 3D trailer on the eShop, the 3D adds a surprising amount of depth to the backgrounds.

The game looks great in combination with what I've seen on the stream. I think if people actually want a good Metroid and don't just want to port beg or shit post, they should check it out because writing it off because the art direction and Mercury Steam seems like you are possibly missing out on a good Metroid game.

2) This isn't the first time Nintendo has handed this series to a developer with a questionable track record. Also, the biggest issue with MecurySteam's Castlevania games was Konami. The first game was great, then Konami started getting involved and screwed everything up.

Mirror of Fate was a 3DS 2.5D Castlevania game made by Mercury Steam between Lords of Shadow 1 and 2. It wasn't the kind of title that would instill confidence here.

Zero Mission is the remake of the first Metroid. Super Metroid doesn't really need a remake because it already looks good. Two needed a remake the most. I don't think it is played as much and it has gameboy grey graphics.
Zero Mission is a GBA game. If the hope here is to reinvigorate the franchise through remakes you'd think they'd start at the beginning as part of the core audience you'd want to bring into the Metroid franchise wasn't even alive when Zero Mission was published.

come the fuck on, can you imagine the shitstorm if they were remaking super??
they are just testing the waters
No, they're cashing in on a Metroid II remake while the most committed fans are thirsty, after C&Ding a fan remake out of existence and farmed it out to a mediocre studio for a 2.5D remake that looks worse than Super on the SNES. Testing the waters would be a faithful remake of Super or of I/Zero Mission so they could introduce a non-trivial amount of their audience to the franchise it's best form or starting point.

At least that's my opinion. We'll see how they actually go with it in time I guess. I'm betting that sometime in early 2018 we'll see more talk about how Metroid doesn't sell well enough coming from Nintendo's public facing staff.

Eh, I don't feel like playing through Metroid 2 again. I would have been excited if it were Super. I also think AM2R looks better. -shrugs-
The level design, controls, bosses, and power ups are new. I don't see how this counts as playing through Metroid 2 again.

If you want fan games like AM2R to be more respected, support the official devs' work and show that fan games aren't denying them a sale.

I really can't understand the port begging when we literally just got the announcement of Metroid
friggin Prime 4 for Switch. This is but a bonus and a pleasant one at that.
Prime 4 is 2019 or 2020 at best. There should be a Switch port, come on its not that hard to understand

It's not like people are asking for it on PC, they're asking for it to be on the system that Nintendo sold to them as the replacement for consoles and handhelds.

Uh no, Nintendo never said it was a handheld replacement. Hence all the games still coming for 3DS. Seems like a lot of people bought the Switch without fully understanding what it is. And they need to stop portbegging every game that gets announced, whether it's for 3DS or a non Nintendo platform.

People are crazy comparing this to AM2R which was clearly supposed to look like Super Metroid. This is not supposed to look like either of those games so it doesn't. They are trying something else with it. Looks fine in action.

I demand AMR2 devs get a shoutout for their hard work. If they are secretly making the new Metroids with either 3DS or Switch that's another story. If not, they need recognition for their achievements first hand by Nintendo.

Yeah I don't see Nintendo praising fan games that are taking their IP without their permission.

Meh, if they didn't use the existing 2D Metroid sprites it wouldn't even exist.

Nintendo themselves have access to these sprites. No excuses. This 2.5D looks terrible. It's looks just as bad as I remember Mirror of Fate looked.

Hopefully they get gameplay right.

Wow. Much better than the original so far, as I found the limited angles Samus' shots to ruin the early metroids for me. Giving part 2 the Zero Mission treatment is a welcome surprise.
