No, they did DB too, but it's not in English and I don't think it's been released anywhere outside of Japan.

Oh i did not know that. Not that it matters since i personally dont see the point in reading Manga in color but i guess some people like it. Its just weird that they would not release it everywhere else.

Buu saga was a trolling tour de force

Vegeta does a heartfelt final sacrifice knowing he'll end up in hell........accomplishes absolutely nothing, Buu regenerates and goes about his day.........

Gotenks! Fusion! New generation stepping up like Gohan when he beat Cell.........Buu escapes the time chamber, kills his entire family, fusions wears off...........

Wait, Gohan has been training this entire time! He has a new ultimate power, he's back.........Buu plays him like a fiddle, absorbs Gotenks, kicks his ass......forgottten for the rest of the arc......

Wait Vegeta is back! Vegito the ultimate fusion! Buu is done.......Vegito lets himself get absorbed, fusion said to last forever wears off inside Buu......

.

I think this is exactly why the Boo's saga is my favorite. And I really love the fact that Majin Boo is clearly a metaphor to the second war or cold war (idk), he goes on a rampage destroying city by city, one by one, until Picollo says (iirc) that 80% of Earth's population is dead.

After that Super Boo simply kill all of the remaining people with a single attack from the place where God lives.

Then Kid boo arrives at the scene and the first thing he does is completely destroy the Earth, nothing remains after that.

But wait, it's not over! Kid Boo goes into space destroyng planet by planet until he arrives at a planet where the dead people live (!!!!!!) and try to kill them, again, while they're already dead!!!

I mean, wtf is happening here?

Kanzenban is, actually. It has the best paper quality and original color pages as they appeared originally in Jump.
The paper quality on the Kanzenban is awesome. VIZBig is the closest any release will get. Can't comment on the Kanzenban releases in other languages.

If you're starting Dragon Ball, do it the proper way, DBZ Saiyan Saga, Ocean Dub. Though it's edited and cut about like crazy, you'll hear characters with some actual emotion, there's a reason why Ocean Dub Vegeta is the one people remember after all these years.

I'd watch the anime starting from DB - GT - Super and all the movies.

Skip Kai unless you want to watch it dubbed. Otherwise Japanese original with all the great VA's, script and music intact.

And fillers?

Seriously, some of you folks shouldn't ever be recommending anything to newcomers. Just because you folks were able to get into the incredibly slow pacing whenever you started doesn't mean it's a great place to start for people completely fresh to the series.

(I'd also argue that Grandma Goku is not a net positive for the series post OG-Dragon Ball, but that's just me...)

Funi Dub of Dragon Ball is actually really good, outside of very few edits to tone down some adult humour, the cast are great and it retains the original music. It's also a show you can blast through in a month especially if you have it on as background entertainment to get through some of the filler stuff.

My personal bias is that I didn't watch DB until post Cell saga in DBZ, and I don't feel like that hurt my enjoyment of the show. I was more excited to learn more about the characters.
The very 1st episode I ever saw of dba was of gohan going super saiyan 2 and owning cell Jr's left and right, it blew my little kid mind, I was in Cleveland either for family reunion or Easter and me and my cousin saw it band that's all we could talk about for hours

It would be some years again before I could see dbz proper again

It still boggles my mind how in this magical mystical kung-fu, sci-fi world, World War 2 still technically happened. (See Janemba movie) Like I wonder if the DB version of the axis ever thought about using Shenron to stop the war.

I mean, WW2 in that world probably happened before any of the Dragon Radars were made.

Imagine going on a journey to get your wish without any idea where any of the balls were, might as well be impossible.

The movies are REALLY non-canon. Like not even anime canon.

So do I watch it like this:

1) Dragon Ball Kai
2) Dragon Ball Kai The Final Chapters
3) Dragon Ball Super

Ignore:
- Dragon Ball
- Dragon Ball Z

?

If you want to watch the best version of Dragon Ball, you need to watch:

1. Dragon Ball
2. Dragon Ball Z
3. Dragon Ball Super

Kai is a lazy, shitty, low budget, cash grab, edited down version of DBZ done 20 years after the fact. It's not fucking good. It's shorter than the original version, of course, but it's fucking weird and the animation is all over the god damn place because there's like 3 episodes of Z being spliced into 1 episode of Kai.

I highly recommend watching the original Japanese version of Dragon Ball and Z. It's a lot of episodes, but it's WELL worth it. We aren't just talking about any cartoon here. This is one of the most influential and popular pieces of animation in the history of the world, and for good reason.

If it's about having the most authentic experience with the series, going with the manga until one reaches Super is the only way to go about it.

If that's not a concern, then there's no reason to go through garbage like fake namik, no reason to drag out everything to a crawl. Kai might might have been a lazy way to celebrate the series, but it is a fine way to experience it, especially if one wants to go with the dub.

What I would do to have a complete Kanzenban collection...

Also, for the billionth and a half time (not saying that aggressively, I just realize I'm a parrot at this point) DB Kai is more "authentic" than the original run of DBZ, second to the manga

I was just thinking about the first scenes of the original DB that I saw airing on TV (Tao Pai Pai killing Bora), and I realized something.

Kami's Lookout is one of the places with the most amount of scenes in the whole story, but we never see the Sacred Land of Korin and it's just downstairs.

I wonder if Toriyama even remembers there's a village down there.

Sazae 11.1
Chibi Maruko-chan 7.6
Doraemon 7.3
Crayon Shin-chan 7.3
Detective Conan 6.9
Dragon Ball Super (episode 94) 6.3
One Piece 5.8

Pocket Monsters Sun & Moon 3.7
Pretty Cure Ara Mode 3.6
Curious George 3.4

Fuck

I've been buying the Japanese ones and they're definitely worth.

How is Conan still doing that well? Haven't they been in filler hell for like two full seasons now?

but it's not

it's literally a shitty low budget edited version of the original run

IN THEORY Kai would be more authentic than the original run (i.e an animated version of the story with a quicker pace, no filler), but in reality, Kai is the absolute shits.

I honestly believe Kai will not leave the same impression on a viewer as the original show. In a bad way. It's too all over the place. Z is slower paced but far more focused.

The only issue with OG Z is some of the filler is ridiculous. Like Bulma having a robotic suit and fighting crabs on Namek.

Was Ginyu Bulma in Kai? What about the best episode of Z, the driving cars episode? If that's not in Kai, fuck Kai, it's inferior on principle.

We're gonna have to agree to disagree there, I loved Kai to bits. Much more than the filler filled Z, not having episodes of meandering nonsense or powering up was a godsend. Soundtrack, pacing, everything is just better to me. I introduced my brother to the series with it and it hooked him right away.

Likewise, though I'll note that I watched the original Japanese run of Kai with the Yamamoto soundtrack (all the way up to Super Perfect Cell which is when they started editing Kikuchi's tracks in to replace Yamamoto's).

I loved it to bits. Far more authentic to the Dragon Ball manga than the filler-ridden DBZ.

Let people watch Kai, they don't know any better, this is fine.

They can get deeper later on if they want to.

If they just want to "get" dbz and be ready for Super and FighterZ then Kai is perfect.

Honestly.

As much as I hate to say it, if you're marathoning the whole Dragon Ball series, Kai is better, it cuts the DBZ arc in half, even if I think DBZ is better in a lot of ways.

Just mute it everytime 18 talks.

In my opinion, the best way (the quickest and maybe most enjoyable way) to start DB and get up to speed is:

  • Read the manga.
  • (Watch the driving episode).
  • Watch Battle of Gods.
  • Watch Return of F, maybe.
  • Then start Super at whatever episode was after Return of F.

If you feel like watching the anime of DB and Z, you can go after select moments instead of watching the whole thing.

Maybe watch GT, just to know what the fuss is.
