But as the characters and worlds became more crystallized over the past couple years, I'm starting to feel very uncomfortable about this game.
I love GAF.

oh my god that is laughableJudging by the early promo material for the game, I don't have high hopes. Detroit seems like it'll be anything but subtle. It's something that is preventing me from getting hyped for this game, regardless of how much I love Heavy Rain and enjoyed Beyond Two Souls.
It was this image that really began to worry me. Notice the text in the upper right. This is not subtle storytelling.

Fair enough. I wasn't aware that the character was modeled after a real person.
Honestly, I'm less interested in talking about potential future slavery when we could just talk about actual slavery that happens today.
I love GAF.
What? This is a game where everything you do is based on choices. If the black guy is violent it's because you chose him to beWas he black? He was definitely darker that the other two protagonists, but it seemed ambiguous to me at best.
Also, even if he is, I'm not sure I would feel that much better since it'll be the only black protagonist being the angry and violent one. Even if those feelings are justified
The whole game is about challenging what is to be human and potentially how 'fake' people can show more humanity than humans at times and how humans will discriminate against any differences.Honestly, I'm less interested in talking about potential future slavery when we could just talk about actual slavery that happens today.
That should interest everyone, obviously.Fair enough. I wasn't aware that the character was modeled after a real person.

This is how storytelling works.
You might take an alien invasion to say something about colonialism, for instance.
It isn't inherently 'fucked' - just need to hope that Quantic Dream and David Cage have some subtly and grace in handling the topic.

But... We saw the white android shoot a cop? You didn't know there was a black character but now you do you're assuming he'll be the 'angry and violent one.'Was he black? He was definitely darker that the other two protagonists, but it seemed ambiguous to me at best.

What the hell are you talking about. But that's the core of the problem. Obviously I can't speak for every other minority, but I find it profoundly insulting when white people tell me the only way they can empathize is if they imagine me as a fucking elf or something.
How does GAF manage to always do this?
i love a good thread backfire.
It's only fucked if the majority of the robots in the game are white and/or the poc robots are only used as background decoration instead of being actual characters.
I dont think this game is trying to do that, its tackling a very specific type of racism that isnt physically possible yet because we dont have AI or robots good enough. But that's the core of the problem. Obviously I can't speak for every other minority, but I find it profoundly insulting when white people tell me the only way they can empathize is if they imagine me as a fucking elf or something.
Confirmed OP didn't even watch the trailer.
You can make different choices that are not violent, you can be a pacifist. This was shown during the conference.
But... We saw the white android shoot a cop? Its also a game of choice.
What the fuck are you even talking about anymore? Your first post was an interesting thought but was clearly incorrect after a few posts but now you just seem to want to justify your feelings.
I also agree that the 'slaves' all being minorities would have been found distasteful as well, its best to have the androids represent human demography and diversity.
Either that or if they were all white a point could have been made about how racism made the white androids more marketable - just like the white doll experiment.
That's where a lot of my fears lie. A bunch of posters are giving me shit because you see robots of colour in the trailer, but unless their stories are told, they're just window dressing. I will fully accept that I didn't realize that one of the protagonists was based on a real person who is mixed race however.
Please. Don't.Outside the OP did not watch the trailer completely, is white/black thing still an issue? Why?

I think your perception of the game is fucked, really.

If you were a private firm turning out a line of autonomous humanoid servants, you would be absolutely mad to do anything to set off your consumers' buried moral guilt. You would quite specifically create robots that, out of prejudice or whatever else, the owners are more inclined to treat as equal partners and employees rather than an unjustly bound, potentially revolutionary threat.
