Microsoft Studios (& Partners) Current and Future Landscape

If they had anything big to announce, I'd assume it would've been at E3.

I guess if they did something at Gamescom they could announce whatever the Age of Empires thing they teased is + Gobo's game. Not really enough for a press conference.

Gamescom has always been more of a update on their current games style of conference rather than a E3 style unveil, it would make sense to show such a large PC IP as AOE at gamescom tho.

A good gamescom show would be

- Crackdown Multiplayer
- Ori 2 gameplay
-State of Devay actual gameplay
- More sea of thieves
- Forza 7 trailer
- Assassins creed trailer
- Bundle announcements for Asscred and Mordor
- Show off some more indie stuff

Just watched that gameplay video of Uncharted Lost Legacy and man, these guys keep knocking it out of the park with the graphics. It's clearly topping U4 already. And sorry to bring it up but a game like Crackdown 3 after so many years of development should have looked a great deal better than it does now. I'm still disappointed about that. Doesn't mean it can't be a great game though.

But Xbox really needs that one game (rather have multiple) that has amazing graphics, just blows you away, that really shows the power of the hardware and is not a racing game for a change. Perhaps that new game, even if it seems to be a long ways away.
Yeh man, that scene looked amazing, those guys are wizards at animation. I think this is what fans really want from MS to out their money into games like these ie AAA in its ambition.
They announced Halo Wars 2 there in 2015

They had one announcement at the end of 2015 with Halo Wars 2, so this would be a nice end of conference unveil. Gamescom is also closer to the second half of 2018 if they wanted a shorter unveil to release window.
Would be a nice way to top off the year for announcements if we got a high profile Fable game coming (or anything new for that matter!)

Really? I am not sure what purpose games with Incredible graphics serve if they aren't percieved as good games. Games like FH3, GoW 4, Ryse and QB already look very good, and One X updates would truly showcase that. I think games can be more than just "graphics" not saying that those aren't important, but it's such and odd metric to be so obsessed with.

I think what he means is something that ticks all the boxes such as gameplay, visual, budget and animation.

Naturally I meant that the games itself are great too. Gears 4 is great but it just didn't blow me off my couch like U4 or Horizon did. U4 and Horizon are great games and a lot of fun and on top of that look amazing. I'm just saying Xbox could use more of that. Ryse looked amazing but wasn't that great of a game in my book. QB was a fine game just too short and those graphics didn't get their full potential with the X1 hardware sadly.

Yep!

Hopefully they do a GC show. I wonder if they have enough content that warrants a show though. I mean they did skip two GCs for a a reason. But where else would a new game be announced and shown like what Studio Gobo seems to be talking about.

What about Sunset Overdrive though? The only negative there is for that game is that it didn't sell well, and I know Ori is and indie and therefor can be perceived as irellevant for a lot of people, but it was such a beautiful game, with lovely gameplay. And I haven't played FH3, but a lot of people seem to love that one as well.
I just think it's a shame that Fable Legends got cancelled. Had it not had the fable name in it, I am sure it would have been praised much more.
If we talk about games that manage to be immersive, than Fable legends was up there for me...(As seen in the official footage they have released yada-yada, NDA, sorry)

From Giant Bomb E3:

She says she is working on a MS VR game, mentions stuff around that will be unveiled around Gamescom including her game. So a conference seems like it's going to happen, but Phil has mentioned he sees VR being apart of Win10 rather than Xbox right now. So the hints about AOE news and now this. Do you think Xbox could be making their Gamescom conference more orientated to the PC gaming market, as Gamescom would be a good market for it.

Yeah, when they teased AoE at Gamescom, they specifically said about that territory being more PC-based.

Another conference with games we've just seen is not a good conference.

Someone tell them to announce something new, as in actually new, unexpected, exciting, unpredictable! Anything ffs

I'm not expecting a Gamescom conference. I don't think they would find another show of mostly the same content to be worth it especially just a couple of months after E3. Though I would expect a sizeable presence on the Gamescom show floor and a real look at Crackdown 3's multiplayer.

Now that they lost the marketing deal with FIFA I wonder what bundle could they announce for Europe, Forza Motorsport 7 and Assassin's Creed: Origins are the most likely, right?

If there's a conference I think it will be like this:

Forza Motorsport 7 bundle with Xbox One X and 1 month of game pass on Europe

Crackdown 3 multiplayer reveal

Shadow of the Tomb Raider reveal

Sea of Thieves progression system reveal

Recore Definitive Edition reveal

Studio Gobo game reveal

ending with a new Age of Empires

They won't have a Gamescom conference but if they did.....

Crackdown 3, full multiplayer reveal and beta available now
Sea of Thieves, just more please
ReCore, re-reveal
State of Decay 2, campaign gameplay walkthrough in co op
New Age of Empires reveal, Xbox and W10 cross buy and cross play
Indie sizzle reel, 10 games in one minute just because -
nah actually show off some cool new games that we haven't seen yet
Forza 7, full race demoed and an actual demo on the marketplace now
Studio Gobo, announcement of..... a new IP or..... a new Banjo!
A few third parties
OG Xbox BC shown off with a selection of games available to insiders to test now
Xbox One X, ten minutes of showing off updated games like Gears 4, FH3 and the differences the X1 brings etc.

Get that down to about an hour or an hour fifteen and that would do me just fine, they probably won't though

There's no need for them to do a Gamescom press conference. The last time was in 2015 but that was only because they specifically held back a few games for that.

Something like a Nintendo Direct could work though. It works well for Nintendo as a way to update us on their games throughout the year and it's something I think both Sony and MS could benefit from doing.

That's unrealistic though. I'm saying from a realistic standpoint what would be good

I think MS have the years announcements done. They may have one surprise announce aimed more at Gamescom market. Who knows, not holding my breath at this point.

MS' 2015 Gamescom conference was essentially a recap of what had been previously announced with the Tomb Raider exclusivity and Halo Wars 2 being the big stuff coming from it.

I think MS could do something like that again this year but we'll see.

Now that they lost the marketing deal with FIFA I wonder what bundle could they announce for Europe, Forza Motorsport 7 and Assassin's Creed: Origins are the most likely, right?
I would imagine so. I suspect AC aligns well with Europe.

My guess is that Microsoft is going to sit on their cards and let some new stuff cook until they're ready for a particularly big showing. Sort of a "we're back!" moment. Whether it's at E3 next year or their own version of PSX. Of course that's my optimistic view.

Has been mine as well for a while. A "make them count" stype of situation, as to not only have one new IP every year.

It's not like Xbox won't have new games and IP's coming, but they are at a disadvantage due to the lack of studios and the fact that the studios they've got are franchise manufacturers (343i, Turn 10, The Coalition, Mojang).

They won't drop Halo, Forza, Gears and Minecraft.
In fact we are getting more Halo, Forza, Gears and Minecraft from partners.

I feel you.

I always envisioned a Perfect Dark with a cyberpunkish dystopia. Joanna Dark walking out of an alley while the bright lights of the city and hover cars glimmer off of her eyes. They could have steam coming up from the sewer vents adding a a nice atmosphere to put the lighting engine on display. Photo-releastic face scans. Although an action 3rd person shooter with tight combat detective work would be huge.

It would be my Uncharted meets LA Noire meets Oni meets Horizon.

Perfect Dark fits perfectly in the resurgence of the Immersive sim genre, thats where I wish MS would take the franchise

and I think a developer that has what it takes to make a great immersive sim is Compulsion Games, makers of We Happy Few

So please Phil, make this happen

This makes so much sense.
Eidos Montreal would also be a great choice in my opinion, but they are too busy now.

It will never happen anyway.

They don't have enough for a conference. They should do a Gamescom Direct and focus on how to fix their brand in Europe.
Their 2015 games one was

- Scalwbound gameplay
- crackdown dev diary
- homefront the tebutiom gameplay
- Quantum break gameplay and date
- FIFA stuff
- Rash teaser
- Halo wars 2 teaser

They have more than enough to top that

"Immersive sim" is such a dumb term, who came up with this trash? Perfect Dark should be like Deus Ex, maybe without some of its RPG elements. So a stealth shooter/action game.

Stated that in August 2015 - assuming he has full financial control 3 years to develop IP which has been dormant could take up to 5 years if new IP.

If he has capital expenditure granted on provision of increased spending per user, see Theme Park Industry. Then he hasn't lied its how modern businesses work when Wall St is king.

He actually said that in October 2014. 3 years is more than enough time to at least have a bunch of stuff ready to be announced. He either was full of shit back then or Satya cut this budget hard before he could fulfill that promise. I think it's a bit of both.

Not a bad idea actually. They could show Crackdown 3's MP mode with the destruction everybody wants to see and maybe a teaser of the Studio Gobo game. Assuming a teaser is ready for it. The majority of their E3 show consisted of third party games and timed exclusives, yeah that really doesn't warrant a full show.

I think if they had a show planned they would have said that by now. I recall Phil Spencer tweeting about a GC show before even E3 happened a few years ago.

It's not that announcements at a Gamescom is unrealistic... but Xbox in past 2 years has reemphasised their focus on E3. It is reflective of the fact that they don't have a lot of new announcements these past 2 years, but not having other pressers don't hurt them.

There is nothing wrong with those franchises though, Nintendo does the same thing and gets praised for it. Outside of certain particular gaming forums, those games have many fans. (There is nothing with what ms is doing regarding those franchises maybe with exception of gears, where the talent could be used elsewhere, but that's imo.)

I think it does hurt them, not in the short term but certainly in the medium to long term.

Whilst Sony will be revealing new games at Gamescom/Paris, TGS and then PSX at the end of the year Xbox will just be sitting ildly in the wings twiddling their thumbs. This then turns into angst on social media and forums which journos then pick up on and start to produce articles with a negative outlook on the Xbox brand.

They have a new console coming in a few months, they really should be front and centre for gamers as much as possible. Even if they arent revealing new games they have to stay in gamers minds and by having a presser at Gamescom would help do that.

I still dont think they'll have one though :(

Anyone that expects them to drop the big sellers is not very good at businessing. Look at Nintendo - How many Mario sequels, Zelda sequels, Mario Kart sequels.. etc? Sony - God of War, Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, GT etc... ? they'll keep making them because they sell a bucket load. (makes you wonder why people say it's MS that milk their franchises...)

Same goes for people that call for a year off from Call of Duty, not happening.

I was playing some QB today and man I forgot hoe good this game still looks, despite the blurriness that is most likely the result of the AA they used here. But animations, the powers, how the gun mechanics feel and how enemies react to being shot it's all top notch. Shame this couldn't be Microsoft's own ND, so to speak. They are now making multiplatform games so it's all good but man.....

A new Alan Wake with this engine on the X. What could have been.

it's very selfish of me but a part of me hope remedys next ventures fail so microsoft can buy them out. remedys management is much to lax with deadlines . they need to be a bigger studio as well
