So what is the deal with "Raw" vs "Fresh"? Is it some kind of weapon leveling up system? Does it go down? Now that I have a flag on a weapon for "Fresh" can I never use it again out of fear of its rank going back down???

I wish this game had a manual. Too many of the meta mechanics are never really explained and left to trial and error - I'm looking at you, Crusty Sean.

15 nets you superfresh and a nice xp bonus, but can't rember the number. There is probably another rank after this but the highest I heard of anyone having is 22 and they are still in the superfresh rank.

I believe the developers mentioned that in addition to new stages we would also be getting some returning ones as well from the original. The original title started with 3 and ended up with 16 in a span of 8 months. Would be cool if by the end of the 1st year of free DLC we ended up with 24 stages, 16 original stages and 8 returning stages.

My votes for returning stages go to:
Urchin Underpass
Saltspray Rig
Kelp Dome
Camp Triggerfish
Piranha Pit
Mahi Mahi Resort

Id rather not have Arrowana Mall and Blackbelly Skatepark back again.

Kelpdome was my favorite stage so hopes it comes back. I kind of hate the narrow maps like Arrowana mall and that one with the bridge, but I hope at least one of them get carried over for variety.

There is a glitch to get infinite XP tickets in 30 seconds each. Quote this post and read below if you want to abuse it before they patch and fix it!

I definitely miss the Splatoon 1 stages too, wish they were all here (though that would probably increase people calling it a port even more lul -_-)

Kelp Dome and Saltspray Rig 2.0 please especially, my 2 faves

Considering how they made Moray Towers and Port Mackerel (one of my least favs in the original) so much better in this game, I am all for them bringing back any of the old maps. I'm confident they can improve on all of them in the same way.

Only map I don't love right now is Inkblot Academy. Too many areas you can't ink.

So I think the bonus for dry, raw, superfresh and so on goes something like:

5.0 3K Raw
10 4.5K Fresh
15 6K Superfresh
?>22 ? ?

My memory might be off though, and you only get it the first time you hit the goals.

I need to branch out of the main weapons I use more. I'm stuck using Splattershots and any time I switch I'm way out of my league. I find Salmon Run is helping because it forces me to try out other sets, but it's to the point I feel like my lack of understanding of the other weapons hinders my play with Splattershots - I don't always understand what range to engage other players at.

I tried playing with the N-Zap a bit yesterday and have decided it's just a worse Splattershot. Same range, but increased fire rate and 1 more shot to kill. Which sounds fine and I liked it in the first game, but I just can't kill anything with it. I think it has a bigger cone of fire or something.

Splattershot Pro is making me happy though.

I only used the Krak-on splat roller in Splatoon 1 and reached the A ranks comfortably. But this game, I'm just not finding the same success. Firstly I cannot work out how to super jump to squid beacons (doesn't seem like anybody does) so I'm stuck using the normal splat roller.

The roller just feels worse in this game for some reason. Maybe the new map designs aren't as friendly to them. I made it to B ranks easily for all three modes, but I'm struggling now against the more competent players. It feels nigh impossible to reach good vertical or flanking spots in most maps as a roller if the enemy are not dumb.

I've switched to aerospray/tri-slosher/slosher but this learning curve of new weapons is painful.

Also, different note: how the fuck do you progress in Salmon Run? I'm not trying to be that guy and I think my self-appraisals are quite honest, but I am miles better than most people I'm playing with, yet can't progress because of the concentration of complete morons (that and connection errors). It's giving me flashbacks to L4D all over again.

I'd like to play horde mode right now. Why can't i play horde mode right now? Seriously Why?

I never had a problem with the splatfest and map rotations, but why would they ever want to just lock out horde mode at random times. One of the stupidest design decision ive seen made for a game in a very, very long time. It's like the only noticeably very new thing in this sequel too.

Ah, thanks. I might try the krak on roller again and see if I have more success.

My old strategy was placing a beacon in a safe random corridor and then placing a "stupid" one in a more open area. Every time someone would come to destroy it, I would jump from the wall and splat them.

You need to get lucky with good teams for a while, I think. Or just play with friends. I got stuck on launch day at around 130% pay grade or somewhere in that region. Luckily I got a few good teams in a row and then after that it seemed like people knew what they were doing and I'm up to 205% pay grade now.

I think it's basically that you can reach a certain point regardless of how much you know what you're doing and then hit that wall of needing everyone to have some idea of what to do. Especially on some of the special event waves - Grillers and Horde can be quite brutal if you don't work together. I think yesterday's weapon set wasn't helping though, especially against Grillers.

I'm actually enjoying how much everyone makes use of the two pings in Salmon Run. Everyone uses "this way" to notify people where the first wave is coming from or biggest threats are, Booyah is used as a thankyou for reviving, and so on.

So that you have people to play with. Salmon Run isn't the main multiplayer mode, so most people will not play it. But if you only make it available at some specific times, the chance of getting enough players, is much higher.
I know other popular games, were some modes were wastelands, since they weren't the popular ones. Making those limitation is great to keep the whole game alive and make many players happy.

Yeah, my chief irritations with Splatoon 2 right now are:

No split screen local multiplayer (this is a really significant issue for me)
Salmon Run locked out at times
The bizarre map limitations - how could they get this so wrong when Mario Kart got this so right?

My main issue with the map rotations is that every time I want to play Moray Towers is in the rotation and is apparently the only map the game wants to let me play when it is.

No split-screen is a real bummer. My SO would have loved that.

Hello Gaf, new Gaffer here!

Nice to be finally able to join the conversation. :)

I have to say, after not being too much blown away by the first Splatoon game, I am very impressed with the second installment.

The colors feel so much more vibrant, the new (but very few maps) are very cool and the soundtrack is charming.
Playing some Turf War matches online on the train to work this morning was just awesome. I had no issues playing the game by using my own cell phone as hotspot.

I am excited for future updates. I hope they will add new modes as well, because Salmon Run is soo addicting. Too bad it's a scheduled event... :(

Cheers!

Actually the first Splatoon released with five stages originally:

- Arowana Mall
- Blackbelly Skatepark
- Saltspray Rig
- Urchin Underpass (now a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Battle stage)
- Walleye Warehouse

Arowana Mall (one of the others) was not available at launch. It came out like a week later didn't it?

Question about the amiibo rewards:
I haven't yet received my Splatoon 2 amiibos but I tried the older ones and each of them gave me their sets respective head gear, what should I do to get more? Is it tied to single player progress or multiplayer level?

I know other popular games, were some modes were wastelands, since they weren't the popular ones. Making those limitation is great to keep the whole game alive and make many players happy.

Why though? I'm not going to focus my social life around trying to make friends with people who own a switch with video game free time at the same time as me just because they want to make matchmaking for a huge part of this game locked out half the time.

And there is no possible way matchmaking would be barren for this game in Salmon Run for at least 2 years, probably more like 5 years. This isn't like a niche indie game. I doubt limiting it in the way they are limiting it even ups the numbers of players that much during the on hours anyway. How many people are actually scheduling their life around this nintendo game vs playing it when they have free time and looking to see if Horde mode happens to be active after they sign in?

It's god damn stupid. One of the worst design decisions ever, and it's insulting that people would defend this garbage.

Why the fuck is salmon run a timed event? When is it back up?

Tomorrow, 7am to 7am. Looking at the schedule it looks like it's on every other day and all weekend, at least initially. I'm guessing they're limiting it to keep interest up in it or something. If it's always there maybe people will get bored of it.

The bizarre map limitations - how could they get this so wrong when Mario Kart got this so right?
In a game like Splatoon map knowledge is much more important in comparison to Mario Kart. So constantly changing the map would make it harder to learn them and not represent the true skill of each player.

I would much more prepare a way to change loadouts without leaving a room. If Nintendo doesn't want people to waste too much time in the menu between battles, just have us create three or four sets and change between them.

This is an incredibly weak excuse. It's just not that difficult to learn maps, especially small arena-based maps as in Splatoon 2. The difference in learning speed time compared to difference in enjoyment due to repetition is not a reasonable trade-off.

Map knowledge is still more important then in games like Mario Kart and there will be a lot more maps coming with time. Constantly changing maps would be like dice rolls, sometimes you are more familiar with one map and before you can adjust to another or try new tactics, a new map is loaded. Limiting the pool makes the game much more tactical and comparative.

Sometimes limitations are a good tool to make a game more fun.

Again it's just an extra mode and most people will not play it. Which could mean, that you will waste time in the lobby waiting for other people to join. By making fixed times, limit the mode and give away prices, more people play it at those times. It's a smart way to get people play a extra mode and not have a bad experience by long waiting times.

Splatoon is my favorite series ever. I had to wait for release to be sure there were no nasty surprises.

The clincher is the change to the heat streak mechanic. I didn't initially realize the implications. But as someone who dabbled in every weapon in the original, it's like the developers built a metagame just for me: achieve a green flag (at least) with every weapon.

Of weapon changes, I think I love the new ink mines the most. So versatile- in deployment, support, lulz. If the Inkbrush Nouveau comes with ink mines and baller I reckon I'll be set for life.

Map knowledge is important in every shooter but I don't know of any other shooters that restrict the map pool like the Splatoon series does.

Maybe some people are fine with it but I find playing the same 2 maps over and over again pretty boring. It gets especially bad when you play the same maps 3 or 4 times in a row, which I've had happen to me several times already.
