Does this game have matchmaking? I'm level 5 and never get placed with anyone under double digits, and it's not helping me learn at all. I'm getting destroyed.

I don't understand this one... You mean revealing your position to enemies? I'm already following the others, I'm relieved. ^_^

Yes. People jump at the worst time possible. I see people die 10 times per match by simply jumping at bad moments. Jumps need to be perfectly timed especially in Splatoon 2. The stealth jump is not as effective as before.

Yes there is matchmaking. But you probably won't notice it much at lower levels. Also, turf war allows friends to join, so rooms are not always going to be balanced.

So apart from the bug, can you get tickets repeating stages or those are also finite?
Is there a way to gain tickets always, even if its not a bug and slower?

You can get tickets from salmon run. It's random, but so far, I have certainly more tickets than I can use for the amount of games I play. The tickets in single player are supposed to be finite.

Can anyone please fill me in on how to deal with abilities? I assume it depends on playstyle, so I mostly play turf wars with an aerospray, focus on inking, but not shy of the occasional kill.

I've gathered up a good amount of 3star gear, but I think I remember the base ability being most important? For the other, should I keep scrubbing until I can afford a complete custom set up? Any suggestions to what that setup should look like? :p
You will want to choose abilities based on your weapon and playstyle. In Splatoon 1 you would typically want very different abilities for lets say Eliter, Luna Blaster and Heavy splatling. It will probably take a while for the meta game to develop enough to get really good recommendations for abilities for splat 2. But I think for an aerospray with a painting heavy playstyle you probably couldn't go too wrong with mobility focused abilities (swim speed up and run speed up) because these will allow you to cover ground faster when painting, and will help you escape from more aggressive weapons. Granted you should experiment and see what works for you.

For scale-able abilities the scaling is based on a function where the effect additional "point" you put into that ability decreases relative to the previous one. A main ability gives you 10 points, subs are 3. So if you get all 3 subs the same on a piece of gear that's a bit less than one mains worth. We had plots of the scaling for all the abilities for Splatoon 1, but it will take a while before we get all that data compiled for Splatoon 2.

In the endgame it doesn't really matter if a piece of gear is 1 star or 3 star because when you reach the required level you will be able add up to 3 sub abilities on any piece of gear you want.

Also note that each piece of gear in the game has a brand. Each brand is biased to be far more likely to get a certain sub ability and far less likely to get another. For example, the brand Tentatek is more likely to roll ink recovery up subs, and less likely to roll quick super jump subs than normal.

Hopefully that's helpful.

So I never played the first, and I'm almost always the lowest level player in the game. But at level 7 I'm pretty consistently performing well and winning a large majority of games, albeit unranked turf war.

I'll take this to mean that I'll be okay without motion controls. The game feels great the way I've been playing so far.

Super fun game btw. I'm having a blast.

Do Abilities Stack?

Is this an useful Item?
If the game allows you to stack abilities the effects will stack. Some abilities cannot be stacked, but those abilities are exclusive to a certain clothing category (hats, shirts, shoes) and cannot be sub abilities. As I noted in my post above main abilities are worth a little bit more than 3 subs in terms of their effects, and stacked abilities suffer from diminishing returns. That's not to say that you don't ever want to stack things, players in Splatoon 1 usually focused their abilities onto just a few things that they wanted to have an advantage in.
So, yes that gear can be very useful if you want to play a weapon that uses a lot of ink, since if has ink recovery up and as well as ink saver.

Yes, they stack. That hat looks pretty good. In general you want to aim for 3 matching sub abilities on your gear. The boosts from single subs aren't really noticeable unless you stack them.

3 sub abilities equals the power of 1 main ability.

If you have too many of the same ability you get diminishing returns.

Thank you! So I should be fine with 2x Sub Ink Saver on Shirt and 1x Sub on Shoes? Just want to be sure different items stack too.

I just want to clarify that the diminishing returns isn't something that kicks in after a certain threshold, it's a continuous function. Adding anything above 1 sub technically gets diminishing returns, but the effect gets stronger as you stack more abilities.
From Splatoon 1 (we don't have all this data compiled for Splat 2 yet):

Yes, you can even (if you are lucky or obsessive enough) put all your mains and subs into a single ability and they will all stack. However, because of diminishing returns, you probably don't want to do this (unless something turns out to be as broken as quick respawn was in Splatoon 1)

So my shoes with main ability reducing ink use for the main weapon , two of the sub abilities being that as well and the third being faster ink reload is a good thing? I thought it was too much lol.

I find ink use reduction, reload buff, special attack strenght and special attack charge buff the most compelling.

Is it possible to cancel out the ninja squid abilitie's slower swimming speed with the normal swimming speed buff ability?

Yeah this is me. I never feel like I am the worst player tho :( Splatoon making me feel bad.
Switching betweem Blaster and Brush currently, I like both weapons :)

Yes, however, the matchmaking in turf war is not based on level, since it is largely just a counter of how much time you have put into the game. The actual matchmaking criteria for turf war is hidden from the players. Nintendo has said vague stuff about it in that it is based on your playstyle (kills vs painting) and other factors, but as far as I know nobody outside of Nintendo knows the actual criteria.

It looks like it requires an incredible amount of grinding for the ability chunks, ugh.

Just want a lot of ink saver / special charge stuff.

Yeah, and wiping them if you don't have the right ones costs 20k lol. Its cheaper to get some other gear and level that instead, if you don't mind the look that is.

so for this what you would want to do is get 3 star gear from a brand that has a sub preference for abilities that you want and then grind to fill the 3 slots then scrub them. rinse, repeat.

Yeah, those shoes are pretty good. A piece of gear with four matching abilities is basically the holy grail.

People usually do stack swim speed with ninja squid to cancel out the speed reduction. Splatnet 2 actually sold a ninja squid shirt with a swim speed bias earlier this week.

Thabks for the answer.
IMO they should have stop the bug but also give tickets to people that didbt do it so they dont feel like they were the ones punished and not the people that actually did it. Fair level for everybody. That or take away the tickets given repeatedly from that box.

I got some nice jacket i can pick up in a few hours at sparky with ninja squid and 3 free slots waiting for me. i buy way too much gear still lol. So much good looking stuff, sometimes interesting abilites, sometimes both is the case.

So you say I should go for example for main weapon Ink cost reduction, ink reload buff and lets say special attack buff for my 3 abilities i wanna stack?

Or something like ninja squid, swim speed, ability charge and something else? basically 3 abilities that stack often enough, more isnt ideal?

I also dont know how special attack buff is good for some special attacks. I imagine its pretty useless for stuff that onehits anyway when it hits and then special charge is better in those cases.

to the guy i just played rainmaker with who thought it was a good idea to escape the enemy by bringing the rainmaker two inches away from our goal:

fuck you :^)

It really depends on what weapon you're playing. You'll probably want different gear for different weapons and some weapons need ink efficiency buffs more than others.

Man does this game have that "one more round" feeling, I just can't get enough of it.

Lunch breaks at work have become hazardous due to almost going over my break time on multiple occasions, plus the people coming to check the switch/game out.

Noob Question of Shame: (or not?)

Is it an good Idea to jump into death while carrying the Rainmaker if it's pretty sure you wouldn't get it to the center or even farther? At least it's not in your Zone anymore, right?

Yeah, that's a thing people do.

God, Salmon Run not being available all the time really is the dumbest fucking thing. It's my favourite mode in the game and I can't even play it when I want to.

I really liked the octobrush today, but it will most likely get nerfed. seems like that one has quite the consumption issue, and being invisible in ink would be nice with it i guess.

What the core of my question was though and i failed to convey because of my kinda sluggish english is: So i should focus on 3 key abilites on my gear for that specific weapon except when it's a unique one like ninja squid? More would muddy the waters so to speak?

When you get to 15.0, you get 6000 XP. I'm not sure if it goes past that.

I'm very sure that it does but the next level is somewhere beyond 20 as I have seen someone reference getting 22. My best is 17-18 something with the Splattershot JR. . I should really go back to it since I just barely made fresh with the N-zap 85. I really want to know when it is, it's kind of frustrating me that Splatoon 2 isn't being ripped apart and analysed at the same speed as Pokemon games do.

Can somone give a quick rundown of what the deal with overtime in ranked is?

You mean jump off the map to reset it to the middle? Yeah, people do that a lot if they don't want to deal with the danger of possibly losing it in your own area again.

Focus on getting three matching sub abilities. The sub abilities don't have to match the main ability but its nice if you want to stack a lot of the same ability anyway.

The abilities you listed will be good for octobrush but you'll definitely want swim speed if you're gonna use ninja squid. Brushes live and die by their swim speed.

to the guy i just played rainmaker with who thought it was a good idea to escape the enemy by bringing the rainmaker two inches away from our goal:

I had a guy do that. He ran as we fought a path all the way to the goal. I look back and he's swimming to our side. The timer eventually killed him in our goal, and we spent the next two minutes trying to fight the other team out of our spawn/goal area, only for them to score and win.

By the way, he ran away on a 4 v 1 power play.

-_-

Haven't gotten the game yet but I have a couple questions about Tower Control:

1) Does the platform only move on your team if the ground around its path is covered in ink? I.E if i'm in a green ink team and obtain the tower, if purple ink is on its path will it be blocked?

2) What does the 'remaining' mean?

It was supposed to be improved today.

Jsyk, those levels only mean how long a player has played the game, and does not necessarily mean their skill level. So someone that has lost basically every match ever can in theory reach higher levels.
There's a hidden number (power level?) for that the game should be using now for matchmaking.
