Destiny 2 without PvP, would it be worth it?

What I'm saying is that the balance changes have 10x the impact in PvP than in PvE so it has to go this way instead of the other.
Well that's not totally true. When they nerfed shotguns, because of the rampant blink/shotgun/range. It basically made them useless in pve. Same goes for reducing handcannon range(rip fatebringer) etc.

Co-op looting RPG is one of my favorite genre

It's worth it, then. PVE will give you the co-op loot 'n scoot RPG that you desire. The only times I ever tried PVP in the first Destiny was to do an easy Crucible bounty; ~99% of my enjoyment of Destiny came from PVE. With expanded fireteams and matchmaking Destiny 2 should improve upon the first's PVE in just about every way.

The same goes for Truth, when its magazine was decreased, and some of the subclasses became less useful due to nerfs, particularly in harder solo missions. It's really downplaying the issue to claim the unnecessary nerfs don't affect PVE negatively.

i've only ever played PVP during the betas. never touched it when i actually bought the game.

story missions, strikes, raids, patrol are what it's all about for me. not interested in pvp.

Destiny PVP is about as unbalanced as an inflatable raft in a Tsunami. I only ever played Destiny 1 for the co op and PVE story missions. I'm doing the same in D2.

You guys are kidding yourselves if you think pvp isn't what carried destiny for as long as it did.
Yep it definitely did partially, it took quite some time after its initial telease though. But PvP has/had a very active community, in game and online on YouTube/Reddit etc. While I cannot gauge how big the PvE portion of the community is compared to PvP all I know is that lots of people played PvE to farm weapons for PvP at the end of every Destiny DLC.

PvP is basically part of the game's endgame content.

But to answer OP's question: you're perfectly fine if you only want to play PvE.

If you have friends to play with, or at least communicate in online games etc and make friends, then sure! If you're die hard solo or online anti-social then...nope.

I kinda enjoyed the PvP in D1 but I was terribad at it. It's just not something I'm good at in any video game. D2 seems to have a focus on greater and wider breadth of PvE content and activities to do, so I feel like it'll be easier for me to focus on that side of things this time around, rather than forcing myself into PvP because its the only "new" thing etc.

1,100+ hours and perhaps maybe 10% of them in PvP. I mainly played it for Iron Banner and Osiris when they were on and only got into it otherwise toward the end. Destiny 2's move to 4v4 and new mode will make me play it a lot more if the beta was anything to go by though.

Playing PvP was not at all integral to getting enjoyment from Destiny 1, so don't see why it would different for Destiny 2, given that it will in all likelyhood offer a better package overall than Destiny 1.

But I would not go into Destiny 2 expecting there to be enough PvE content to keep me wanting to play it daily for months or years

Is there no 'Horde' like mode at all?

From what they've shown, it looks like public events will be the closest thing to horde mode.

Besides, horde mode isn't really a PvP activity. That said the PvP part of Destiny 2 does seem mighty weak

When the PvE content runs dry, PvP is the logical conclusion. I was not massively successful in D1 PvP (nor do I hope to be in D2), but I completed all the quests at least once. Also, nothing beats the feeling of heading into an Iron Banner match with a full clan fireteam. Good times man.

Trials is like a different game onto itself. Not necessarily "enjoyable" for my skill level, but I persisted to collect all armor and weaponry.

If I did not have friends that support me in PvP, I wouldn't really play it. As such, the core of Destiny for me is still in PvE content, especially raiding.

Totally viable way to play the game. While I did really start to enjoy the pvp later on, most of my first year of playing destiny was pve almost exclusively. Destiny 2 seems to have even deeper pve progression.

For me it would be perfectly fine especially if the resources went into more PVE modes like the wave based mode from ODST etc.

But I can see why PvP is there and it can be a lot of fun and fairly competitive. I just wish PVE and PVP balance was so closely tied to the game I would rather it be its own thing like it is in COD. Where you open it up, make a new character, unlock through level progression and then they can do what they want with the weapons and abilities.

It must be such a headache trying to design around it!

Still a solid purchase and experience but avoiding IB/Trials means less ways to reach the highest light level gear/weapons. Also there are daily activities tied to PvP. Again, all optional but it slows down your overall progress.

What are these IB/Trials? Some kind of pvp quests that have been mentioned?

If so, are they continuous in a way or do I only need to complete it once and I'll be done with pvp?

I'll be fine with the latter.

Until we know Bungie isn't fucking gamers with content again, I'm not sure if it would be worth it even with pvp.

They have been pretty transparent with the amount of content this time unlike D1, I think it should be fine.

IB is a monthly PvP event that awards specific themed weapons and gear, the kick is that your gear level matters in this mode, i.e if your gear level (Light in D1) is 390, you'll do more damage to level 375 enemies, and they do less to you, so it is like high end PvP. But the gear aren't that special in terms of power so you won't miss much unless you really like the looks, or just want to collect everything.

Trials is THE competitive PvP mode of Destiny 1, it was 3v3 elimination based, and you can only lose 3 times in your run, or you are out unless you acquire another card to start fresh. The main draw is the Lighthouse run, where you need to complete a flawless card with 9-0 record, that way you get to visit an exclusive social space called The Lighthouse. But again, they are only relevant if you want to do it, as no PvP activity in Destiny is absolutely required to play the game.

Iron Banner is a 6v6 PvP control mode. It allows access to high end armor and weapons based on your performance in it and completing various bounties. Trials of Osiris is a 3v3 PvP mode where you get access to some of the best loot in the game. It is immensely fun but highly competitive. Once you join a clan for raiding and other endgame activities you might decide to do them.

Do you have to play Destiny 1 first or can you just roll into Destiny 2? (PvE)

You can just start in D2. There will likely be a bunch of references to stuff from the first game, but based on the mission we got to play in the D2 beta, D2 does a really good job of setting the stage and giving you all the information you need to hit the ground running.

- over 300 hours in Destiny 1
- not a single hour in PVP (only for main quests, hated it)
- planning the same for Destiny 2

I put around 200 hours into Destiny 1. The vast majority of that was PVE, strikes, raids, patrols etc with friends.

I did PVP briefly to get my crucible rank up sufficient to buy vendor gear or for those exotic quests that demanded it, and I would dabble briefly in Iron Banner when it was on, Trials of Osiris we did a couple of times and hated it; I've just never been a huge fan of PVP in Destiny, smaller scale stuff isn't really what I enjoy.

Having played the Beta, the lowered player count in PVP turns me off further, its just not that fun for me, so I don't expect to do much PVP in D2 other than on those odd occasions where it might be of benefit (quests etc).

Just roll into Destiny 2. You can always revisit Destiny 1 at a later date or watch the Byf video if you are interested in learning more about the lore.

Awesome, thanks! My PvP time would be VERY limited because of family life stuff .... so PvE is where most of my time is.

Now the PS4 Pro vs PC question comes into play!

Sure, I've known some people who only play PVE and never or very rarely dabble in PVP.

Im one of those people. I haaaaaaaate pvp. But I enjoyed destiny 1 alot. I mainly stopped playing because I'm a PC gamer now and that fov and 30 frames was rough to go back too. Thank the maker it's coming to PC with all the features a PC platform brings. The PC beta was a home run and all colors for me.

Last time I checked I was looking at around 600 hours in the first game and of that I'd say the vast majority was in PvE, I played a little PvP with some friends, and spent a day when I was recovering from an operation doing the Thorn exotic quest, and I didn't particularly enjoy myself either time (though thats the case for any form of PvP). I'd be ecstatic if the sequel never "forced" me into PvP again.

In terms of the OP's question, without a doubt Destiny was very playable without ever going into PvP, I doubt the second would alter this in any meaningful way.

Deffo jump right into 2, you won't miss much :) Comfort/friends I think is key regarding PS4/PC.

I found the original Destiny's PVP to be a fun distraction from the PVE stuff. It could be frustrating at times but I found myself having enough fun that I usually wanted to get involved for at least the weekly rewards or special events like Iron Banner.

The PVE stuff is the main draw but depending on how Bungie handles PVP this time around there might be some compelling reasons to get involved.

I think so. As long as the content of 2 is as large as everything through The Taken King expansion for Destiny 1, it should be a lot of content that is replayable with nightfalls and other modifiers.

Considering that in terms of pve content destiny one released with like a third of a game, and it took them $80 of DLC to even get close to a reasonable launch amount of content?

Destiny would be BETTER if they didn't have pvp.

You guys are kidding yourselves if you think pvp isn't what carried destiny for as long as it did.

Bungie makes their community activity public. At no point in Destiny was the player count in PvP higher than PvE. If that's so, how could PvP "carry" Destiny?

To the OP, the PvP is OK, I wouldn't call it good. Strikes, raids, dailies, bounties, etc...are more than enough to get your money worth out of the game. You can always just jump into PvP if you have an exotic quest or something.

I think I'm fine with pvp quest, as long as I can actually complete it (not a daily or something like that).

The exotic weapon quest aspects of PVP we're TERRIBLE. No reason at all to require that kind of stuff. Then again, a lot of the exotic weapon tasks were terrible (Find X amount of Y -> spend several hours making a loop in a patrol area to get all of it).

Honestly, I have no intention of playing PVP. It matters to some, but it's in no way the reason I want to play Destiny. I'm a controller player too.

I can't stand destiny PvP, yet I played DAYS of destiny.

I am sure there are people who play it mainly for PvP, but a very large percentage of the content is for PvE.

Played 250 hours of Destiny between Year 1 on 360 and TTK on PS4 and might've played PVP 2 hours. It's never been why I buy Bungie games. Destiny 2 is no different.

I don't see why not. PvP was the weakest part of Destiny 1. When I think of the amount of times I'd spray someone full of bullets, only to be one-shot killed by them due to one of those ridiculous specials. Ugh. If there was a hardcore mode like CoD, maybe I could get into it.

When companies reveal their stats, something like 90% do PVE only. PVP gets a lot of attention online, but most players of MMOs primarily play PVE. Diablo III went through the same thing, where Blizzard pushed PVP a lot, and then realized that most people never even touched it.

I have no interest in the PvP and I'll be buying it.

The fucking worst. I hated having to slog through the terrible PvP to get guns I wanted to use in PvE. I hope they drop this in D2. No forced PvP!

Same here, have they made any mention about it at all? As much as I'd like it, I can't see them removing them completely.

At the very least I hope there are no more PVP quests where you can lose progress. That was absolutely infuriating.

I doubt it. Insisting that every player do both seems to be a core part of their design vision, and one they will not back away from. I expect just as many poorly designed quests in D2.

And yeah, the progress losing quests are just abominable in a game where you can eat supers within seconds of spawning two or three times in a row.
