This is correct.
Dude has millions of people watching him, a sizeable amount of that demographic is young and easily influenced. They will think it's ok to use it because their favourite Youtuber does it, because "it's not utttered with a racist connotation".
It's so common to see people on text and voice chat spew out racist slurs and stuff like this Pewdiepie incident is part of the problem.

Well since Pewdiepie has 50mil+ subscribers, it wouldnt surprise me if some of these kids grew up watching him.
Racism is very alive, in all factors of life. It's not just gaming communities.
People just feel like they can say anything online and in videogames because there are no consequences, Youtube & Twitch don't do jackshit against blatant racists.

And honestly, this is the hole people like PDP have dug and dragged the entire community into. I woke up this morning to a long twitter tirade from total biscuit about how he thinks it's bullshit that the youtube community has to quantify the fact that most of them aren't racist and how bullshit he thinks it is that not being racist isn't the default mindset you have towards these people.
There's a reason for that John. More and more high profile youtubers show themselves to be massive racists as the days go on. It paints all gamers in a negative light and, yes, now more than ever, you're going to have to quanitfy your beliefs because not being racist is no longer the default. People like JonTron, PDP, Boogie and all their apologists have removed the benefit of the doubt you once had.

AGAIN, the question that no one defending this seems to be able to answer, how many times does he have to use racial epithets on stream in front of millions before you start questioning whether or not he's racist? Because this is like the 4th or 5th documented time.
Like, real talk, if the New York Times comes after you and calls you racist, you can't, just months later, slip up and start using "niggers" on your stream. He should know better. Or maybe he just doesn't because this is how he actually feels.

It's saddening, but when we have the early chain of commentaries and views about this are popping up on YT, their line appears to be 'fence-sit' like Boogie, or defend him and dog-whistle about the word being used by black people, followed by seemingly sporadic none-acknowledgement by any of his peers, or larger YT channels in general, you have to limit how much sympathy you can give these people if they aren't going to defend the integrity of their profession.
Well, there are several things not working in your favor, here. The first thing is that racism isn't what you make it out to be. What a racist is isn't what you make it out to be. Just because some people has blatant, outrageous racist and elitist ideas, doesn't meant that someone who's not as bad isn't a racist. The biggest issue I have with this happening, though, is that with all the bad weather Pewdiepie has been in over his actions and statements, he doesn't immediately regret saying this. He goes "I don't mean that in a bad way" about 20 seconds after having said it the first time. If he had realized that it is not OK to use the word he did in the manner he did, if it was a genuine slip up due to cultural differences, he still should have immediately regretted it. I'm Scandinavian, and I once outright used the word "nigger" in a way that made all Americans spit their drinks at once. It was a cultural difference thing, and it was a very long time ago. I didn't understand the word at the time, but trust me, I have understood it from that day forward.
He's past the point of being able to cite this as a cultural difference, because he's been through this, now. He shows he realized that he'd used a bad word and tried to downplay it by saying "it wasn't meant like that", but the truth is that without any sort of "that was a slip up, and I really did not intend to use that word", it really can't be called anything but racism at this point.

I was in the middle of typing out a response to this when they were banned. But as someone who is also from a culturally diverse area of London, I found using that as a reasoning for why PDP isn't racist hilarious. I can guarantee if you called someone a 'fucking n***er' here, they wouldn't see it as a silly little 'slip up'.

Just wanted to say to the GAF community, thank you for advocating for proper behavior and making sure that the threads are free from racism and bullshit that others try to spew. I'm proud to be a GAFer.
On a sidenote, I think these threads are necessary because it does help "purge" certain posters who clearly are racists or GG sympathizers and then still take it a step further.
