And yet these folks don't "stand out"?

Platform history wise yeah, Cloud stood out but not from an aesthetic level. Bayo has actual Nintendo history so she fits either way. Snake looks almost the same as every middle aged brown haired white guy in gaming.

Yeah, I simply cannot see Sakurai jumping right into another Smash after just finishing 4. The man needs his breaks from the series with how it keeps almost killing him!

Whatever this was for, I feel it's something brand-new.

I can go another generation with this Smash. Give us Kid Icarus Uprising 2, Sakurai.

Cloud stood out? I thought he actually fit in Smash Bros Universe very well.

At the very least, he's on the same boat as Snake as in they're both third party characters who just happen to be more popular on non-Nintendo consoles.

I just don't understand people who single out Snake for "not fitting in" but have no problem with Cloud or Bayonetta.

I see the flipside happening too. People saying Cloud or Bayonetta sticks out but they don't care about Captain Falcon or Ike. Or people who single out all the "anime" characters as if Nintendo isn't a Japanese company and Link or Pikachu are somehow not "anime". 9 times out of 10 it just seems like a quick way to say "I don't like this character".

Next time you're doubting your pie in the sky predictions, just remember that we went into E3 thinking Samus was gone for good, and we came out of it with not one but two Metroids. Shoot for the moon. Listen to your heart. Paint with all the colours of the wind. Immortality: take it, it's yours.

Nintendo has bought Scalebound from Microsoft, and is rebooting it as a new Metroid where you play as Samus controlling a giant Ridley. Hideki Kamiya is back at the helm, and hosting this Direct, and he'll tell us the release date eight times and direct us to his Twitter for any further questions.

I doubt many thought metroid was done forever.

If anything, cloud appeared a lot on nintendo consoles with stuff like 2 kigndom heart spinoffs, FF Explorers, theatrythm and other weird stuff.

Snake appeared on nes, gb, gc and 3ds

And FF stayed for a LONG time nintendo exclusive

For real, get that "Smash is for Nintendo" stick out of your bottom, people. Not even Sakurai had that "rule".

Snake is still a pretty big video game character, but I'm not sure it's worth trying to get back unless Nintendo is trying to get some MGS action on Switch as well.

I guess they are ok with promoting the competition with Ryu and Cloud being from exclusives on other platforms, but it seems a bit unwise to not try and get anything out of it.

Direct prediction:

- Mario Odyssey release date announced
- New Mario series Amiibos announced
- Big Zelda story DLC previewed, release date announced
- Xenoblade 2 release date announced - delayed to early 2018
- Pokemon MakeThatLast3DSBuck Edition release date announced
- Whoops we're out of time

Sakurai's admitted that he doesn't really care all that much about console wars.

https://www.gamasutra.com/view/news...oud_console_wars_and_fighting_game_design.php

"I think we should forget about console wars and focus on what’s really important: enjoying the games themselves."

That being said, I'd imagine the one line he probably isn't willing to cross is adding in characters directly owned by Nintendo's competitors in the hardware market (ie Banjo & Kazooie, Master Chief, Kratos, etc). But third party characters that just so happen to be more associated with non-Nintendo consoles are fair game.

My prediction

3DS

Pokemon - Needs no introduction.
Advance Wars 3DS - It's a brand new Advance Wars game for the 3DS
Mother 3D - A 3D remake of Mother 3, comes complete for stereoscopic 3D. DUH!

Switch

Mario Odyssey - DUH!
Metroid Prime 4 - First trailer for the game. It's actually 2.5D and not first person anymore.
Little King Story Remastered - Obviously a remaster of Little King Story from the Wii.
Genital Jousting - The PC game is being ported to Switch with HD rumble and motion control support. Local multi-player.
Castlevania - Konami is making a brand new 3D Castlevania entry for the Switch.
Contra Switch - Made by Treasure. What number are we up to in Contra again?
Sin And Punishment 3 - by Platinum Games
Guardian Heroes 3 - Treasure is too busy making this, that's why Platinum handles S&P3.
Fire Emblem Echoes Genealogy Of The Holy Wars - Comes complete with Thracia 776. Both games in glorious 2D graphics. Or really good cel-shading.
Koei - No, not Tecmo Koei, just Koei showing they actually know how to make good games again, and cancels Fire Emblem Warriors and publicly apologizes by making Aerobiz Super Sonic 3, Genghis Khan 3, Romance of the 3 Kingdom 14, and Uncharted Waters 5 for the Switch instead.

Ah, I got your point now. Yeah, who cares, at long the characters are fun to play with.

Snake fucking kicked ass and was the coolest thing in Brawl, sorry haters

Yup, but haters won since Snake didn't get in. :P

I figured part of the point of Smash Bros. was the novelty of having all these characters from such drastically different backgrounds and art directions all together in one place. No one sticks out more than anyone else.

That's a fair point, but remember how Sakurai has mentioned in the past how much work is put into making the characters fit naturally in the same world? Characters like Link, Fox, Mewtwo, etc seem relatively easy to integrate despite being from very different series, because they all had colorful designs. The same can't be said about Snake.

This is like the stupidest argument to drop a character ever

Roster consistency is a factor in every fighter ever made. You may not care so much about that, but it's important to lots of people.

Why does this matter.
Maybe it doesn't. Just my take on a more business side of things.

Fair enough.

I get what you're saying, but I legitimately don't see what makes Snake different than, say, Captain Falcon. They're both overly-buff dudes in tight suits. Metal Gear is also a series that's known for its mixture of realism with stylization and romanticism. The ridiculous nature of Snake's suit, his blatantly idealized body, juxtaposed with his gruff, deadpan-serious face and voice manages to put him in a realm of cheesy, exaggerated 80s-esque fantasy. He's like a living GI Joe figure.

Even then his fish-out-of-water nature was a big part of what made him such a great addition, out-of-left-field addition to the game. The codec calls were amazing.

I can't say Snake really stuck out when most of the cast in brawl had that...what's the word..."gritty" look and dulled colors.

Man, can you imagine getting an Odyssey release date for like... Late October?

If they delay Xenoblade Chronicles i won't believe Nintendo ever again
ever ever

Alright one more vern post and I know this is definitely reaching since he said he didn't know any first party games and this was just a topic asking what ports you'd like to see on Switch lol.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=234013899&postcount=74

Metroid Prime Trilogy HD
Super Monkey Ball

Lol... I want this to happen. That's all.

Is that all you require to know?

It's part one of the interview.

The direct won't leak unless Vern or Chris spill the beans, so relax now.

I don't know the details of what Nintendo will show during the Direct. I wish I did. I'm waiting just like the rest of you. If I mention any games (which I haven't yet and won't) it would purely be speculation on my part with regards to the Direct.

I tried to search through the thread and see if there is any stuff I need to respond to or try and clarify... If i missed something let me know.

Damnit people, all this Smash talk is making me excited for an announcement that probably won't be happening any time soon.

I wanna play Odyssey mostly blind so I hope the new trailer is short :P

All this talk about Smash Bros, I'm really curious as to what Nintendo are going to do about the Smash Bros amiibo line going forward. I had always assumed that if the port rumor was true, they'd all just work. But even if it is just a port and the amiibo work the same way as before, what about all the discontinued Smash amiibo? There's a huge portion of Smash characters that no longer have amiibo available.

And if it's a new game, will it have the same amiibo functionality? Different? Any at all? And if it does, do the rerelease amiibo of the characters that are in the game but discontinued? Make new amiibo for them that don't fit in with the old line but aren't a full new line either?

Will they just start more Player 2 amiibo, basically rereleasing the entire line again but with different colors or poses?

Tbf Falcon was a comic book inspired character who was made ever flashier in Smash with his "YES!" and "show me your moves!" one liners, but I see your point. Admittedly I don't know much about MGS except for the first two games.

Then name something that's objectively inconsistent, instead of just your opinion.

I don't think it's possible to be objective on this since some will see Snake as the mature type that fits only in M-rated games, while others will see him as more of a parody of the macho buff guy archetype who fits well with the rest of the roster.

I was thinking they'd probably reissue the SSB amiibos. At least the characters who never got non-Smash series figures. Maybe make Player 2s for some who didn't get them before (Wario, Little Mac, Alph...)

...Or they could make new renders for the game which would require them to make new amiibos.

We're talking a lot about a game that probably won't be announced here.

Hoping for my field trailer for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (along with some more characters, story and ESPECIALLY music!)

Smash Bros Switch would be nice.

Mario Odyssey new worlds and more new music would be great.

Fire Emblem 2018 footage would be freaking epic. Don't see that happening as it could overshadow Fire Emblem Warriors but... I can dream! (Speaking of FE... I want my waifu Amiboo! Camilla!)

Mother 3. Either VC port or both a remake (akin to N64 version) and VC port. (Again, I can dream!)

Project Octopath Traveler. They have a booth at TGS... maybe we'll see it at this Direct too?

DQXI hopefully. I'm curious if I'll end up getting this version or PS4.

New first party games (or new IP primarily) would be great along with new 3rd party games and not as many ports.

Virtual console info - primarily Gamecube so I can get my PSO Episode 1 & 2 fix and Super Mario Sunshine fix.

Man screw all you guys for bringing all this smash talk. In my head I know there's bugger all chance of it actually being announced but now y'all got me on the hype train. It's the game I want above all else and will probably consume 99% of my gaming time for the next 5 years. Just hook it straight into my veins.

This is the first Nintendo console in ages where we've totally been in the dark about Smash Bros. Wii and Wii U both got their Smash games announced before the system was even out and they were even in development. Melee was announced the E3 before the GameCube came out and was released 6 months afterward. The fact that the Switch is 6 months old, has already had its first E3, and we still have no idea what the hell is happening with Smash or Sakurai is pretty unusual.
