I never realised having followed Sony mainly for the exclusives, then the design (which is crap this gen), then the capabilities (which are sub-par to everything this gen), that Sony actually never bothered developing that strong of a franchise management.

They had Crash, Ape Escape, Syphon Filter, Music2000, Medievil, CoolBoarders, Jet Moto, Wipeout, Jak&Daxter, MLB, Twisted Metal, Wipeout, Drive Club, ParrapaTheRapper, Everybody's Golf, InFamous, Killzone, Motostorm, Resistance, Sly Cooper, Socom etc... How many franchise have they sold or abandoned instead of developing their backlog?

While Microsoft has a very bad history of cancelling games, Sony released them only to abandon them including the best...

They had Quantic Dream (Beyond Two Souls, Farenheit, Detroit etc...), Manchester Studio (responsible for PSVR titles), Studio Liverpool (ex-Psygnosis, Wipeout, F1 etc...), Zipper (SOCOM), Evolution Studios (WRC, Motorstorm, DriveClub) etc...that they all either sold or closed during the PS4 era...
They never owned Quantic Dream. The closure of Evolution Studios was a pretty poor decision as I loved Motorstorm but they did get Insomniac and increased the size of their current studios. And while they did drop certain IPs, they also created newer, better selling ones.

They have major console sellers after acquiring new IPs for their brand. These "normal" people love these games. Elder Scrolls and Fallout are major IPs.

There's a reason why Sony is locking up exclusive deals from third party devs, and that's because it brings people to their platform. People can't sit here and say it really has no impact on Xbox when Fallout and Elder Scrolls still very big titles.
Elder Scrolls and Fallout are pretty PC-centric games. They sell a lot well but they're not GTA, CoD and FIFA. One of these franchises going exclusive would be a serious blow since they are mainstream titles.

They won't/can't Sonys pockets are not deep enough..and too much of a gamble drop Billions if shit goes sour..where for MS its just pocket change $$
Sony doesn't need billions as they don't need to buy studios instead of publishers and build them up. Look at Insomniac Games - only cost $229M. And they churning million seller every couple of years.

lol MS just bought like 10 studios and a wealth of IP/franchises, and you're comparing that to Insomniac? hahaha

Power move by MS. Xbox is bound to have golden years this upcoming generation.

If I were making decisions at Sony I would go big too because the third party landscape just got smaller, Xbox Game studios is now huge, and they don't have Gamepass.

Things just got real interesting.

I think Sony will stick to their strategy of delivering exclusive GOTY candidates for PlayStation. The producer of Fallout 76 and Fallout 4 going to Microsoft isn't really going to move the needle there right now IMO.

If Bethesda can get their mojo back and start making big time RPGs again, then things will get interesting.

That's not what I am saying. I am saying that there is no need to by 10 studios - most of those studios are useless anyway. That said, I do think that Insomniac Games's output quality over the past 5 years outweighs the Zenimax studios. And they're going to continue with a game this year and another next year.

I'm sorry, but I just realized that Sony is now paying Microsoft to keep Deathloop and GhostWire: Tokyo timed exclusive to PlayStation 5 :D

I mean, that's a good start to fight back ;)

They don't need to respond they will still be getting majority of the Jrpgs and they've already got great 1st party titles. We have yet to see how Microsoft puts use to Bethesda making exclusive titles for them.

Lets assume Sony wants to counter the Bethesda acquisiton. If you could choose one publisher, which one would it be? Some publishers are out of reach (SE, Capcom etc.) but lets dream. Square Enix would be my pick, because it fits to Sony perfectly but thats probably impossible. Koei Tecmo would fit well too and would be realistic.

Just for clarification. Sega bought Atlus back in 2013

None, focus on studios that are already producing titles, and expand them

If i had to pick one, it would be dice, just so bf might have a chance again

Which could Sony actually afford?

They have exposure to other markets to consider and they don't have anywhere near the market cap or cash of MS.

They'd honestly be better off focussing on what they've been doing right this generation and trying to build on it.

Sony will announce Take Two acquisition any minute now OP. I have it on good authority.

Honestly, and there's competing data on if Sony has the funds to do this type of buy, but this would likely be BIGGER than Bethesda...and it's the only move Sony could make - besides something totally unreal like Ubisoft - that would drain the hype Microsoft's acquisition had.

Voted Capcom because I didnt see take 2. Take 2 is the only way to counter what happened yesterday. There is no spinning it, if MS decides to make zenimax games exclusives its a disaster for sony. Capcom wouldnt be a bad pick up either though. But yes sony HAS to do something, that if they want to stay in the console business.

A first party GTA 6, that would be first party sales cut would get like 30 dollars for the disc sale and 70 dollars pure profit digital download. 10-15 million first year easy, you do the math. Its worth it.

I don't think Sony is shaking in their boots over what the Fallout4/Fallout76 team is doing next.

I think Sony sticks to their strategy of releasing exclusive GOTY type games for PlayStation hardware. If Bethesda somehow (unlike Rare) gets better after being acquired by Microsoft and Starfield is a masterpiece, then let's revisit this discussion. I'll build a PC myself if that happens.

The rest of the shooters in the portfolio Microsoft acquired won't move the needle cause just about anyone who really loves shooters is already in the Microsoft platform one way for another.

They can't buy any of those because all of them are publicly traded. That means everyone on the planet will know as soon as Sony places a bid. MS didn't have this problem as Zenimax was privately traded. MS lucked out in a very big way that no one seems to be able to realize yet. In 2018 there were rumors that Zenimax was getting sold. Two companies were interested. Microsoft and Amazon. I guess Microsoft won.

What I am saying is, if Sony tries to buy up any of those, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Nintendo or whatever company with cash on hand will surely get between them.

It's time for new PlayStation leadership to stop being complicit and pull the trigger on Kojima, Bluepoint, & Capcom or Square Enix

All three console makers have needed to bulk up. Nintendo I thought was going to be okay since they combined handheld and console but they have been rather light on releases. Sony needs like 5 more studios and Microsoft originally needed like 10 more studios at the start of this gen and pretty much have done it.

edit: on topic I don't really see Sony buying studios. Sony tends to be all talk on that regard. At most I can see them continuing the expansion of the studios they already own and making b team games as well as the a team game to pad things out and hopefully by next gen both teams will be a teams. Capcom would be the best thing for Sony right now if I had to choose.

If Microsoft is going to keep spending like that there's no point in trying to counter anything. You just stick to your guns and do your thing like Nintendo does. If that means you lose the generation and a big chunk of your market you sever the heads of the people inside Sony responsible for that strategy and try something new for years down the line.
