How do you know that "he thinks he's smarter than everyone..." sounds like more projection to me.

Him hiring world class engineers in the fields he envisions shows he doesn't think he's smarter than everyone.

I knew about all of that, but it's been a long time, and I didn't expect a reference to it in this thread. Went completely over my head, so thanks for the explanation.
 


Of the many improvements and changes that will likely come to twitter in the near future, it will be interesting to how many of those features will be behind a paywall. I'd hope he'll try to improve the feature set for non-paying users as well.

It's crazy that this weird meme is based on an actual (journalist?) who didn't understand math, and thought Elon Musk could give everyone in the world a million dollars. I forgot who it was, though, and the exact circumstance. I think it might have been when he was being asked to personally solve world hunger, and before the whole buying twitter thing.

No doubt an internal person should have more skills and will have more familiarity. But external is a new mindset and probably cheaper too. I said it before.... attitude means a lot to some bosses.

I know what some people will say..... Musk is a loud mouth, so it's fair employees are loud back.

Ok, go ahead. Good luck trying to battle it out upstaging a guy like Musk publicly hoping to win. Never mind it being Musk. Lets say its a typical grey haired boring suit and tie guy who is quiet. Guess what? You'd lose the battle too.

Maybe Musk thinks this is just like they did in his dad's South African emerald mine. Just get some new people if the old ones got worn out.

When someone is fired there is no hand off, unless the agreement is they stick around a bit and ease out of it.

The big difference is that Musk canned half the company whereas under normal situations, companies fire individual people here or there where even covering that person's job can be a pain if only they knew the role.

His mass firing might be the biggest mistake ever. Or, like most companies the roles get refilled and covered and things smooth out.

It assuredly is a mistake - no one runs a business like this. And end the end what does he expect to get? I mean.... It's fucking Twitter. It is a marginal business with marginal monetization methods. There is no real upside to the business model, it's a legacy tech company, that's both controversial and uninteresting for advertisers. And shit, even TikTok which is light years ahead of Twitter can't make money.

The buy out was silly, but thinking the problem was the employees (who are taking the blame and the firings) isn't really the problem. It's just a full business space at this point. Despite his addiction to it, the rest of the world would rather invest in things that actually make money or add value.

The thing that cracks me up about this thread is how hyper focused it is on the employees - like this they are some brain dead cabal - so smart to be master mind manipulators of society with their moderation but too lazy to actually do real work (and can just get contracted out like garden workers or warehouse employees).

I remember a time when I worked at a failing tech company I am sure everyone knows... But anyways... Got a new CEO. He walked around the halls then ended up sending an email to the whole company that basically said "you know the problem, and why we are failing, is there aren't enough left over pizza boxes on people's desks". As though the failing business was lazy employees instead of a gross mismanagement of a once high flying company. Despite the "it's the lazy workers" fault approach, it didn't actually ever get better and continued to decline into obscurity. Cause generally it's not the employees fault things go tits up.

Unless there's so actually reshaping of what Twitter really does there's just no way I can see it getting anywhere. Meanwhile, the gross abuse of employees (and folks cheering it on) has me feeling pretty justified in calling Musk an idiot.

Nope. Nothing has changed so far in terms of content moderation, and banning accounts that were impersonating other people was always against the rules, and should be against the rules. It has nothing to do with "comedy." Do you think account impersonation should be allowed on twitter? If not, I would think that this isn't the best argument.

Now, if you want to accuse him of still putting advertisers over free speech, and not making a revision of content moderation a priority, and not doing anything to restore the accounts of people who were banned, I believe there you would have a much stronger argument for accusing the man of saying one thing and then doing something else.

I remember seeing that, but the rules still haven't changed. My guess is that it was caught in some BS algorithm that still exists, because there are TONS of tweets making fun of him in much worse ways that did not get moderated. Like the second part of my post suggests, moderation hasn't changed, and that more than anything else is what makes him at least somewhat of a hypocrite.

That twitter guy is wrong regarding backfill strategies.

The conventional way of firing people is to fire them on the spot in the morning (at least in the US/Canada). Youre gone in the next 10 minutes. There is no hand off. Any new replacement gets hired (or transferred from a different role) and just dives right in hoping to figure it out. The boss isn't going to say "hey youre fired.... oh by the way can you transition your role to your peer in the next 48 hours before we kick you out? Thanks." The only handoff is you giving your boss your laptop and cell phone. If youre lucky, you keep the phone for an extra few days as approved by them to transition to a new phone if its the only phone you got.

The only time there is a formal handover is when it's planned transition (like me getting offered 3 months lead time to work and teach my replacement my role) and everyone is told you got months of lead time but are still expected to work. Voluntary retirement is a good example of that. People accept termination with a deadline date and pay out. IN return you keep working and smooth it over before you leave lets say a month later.

The guy thought he knew better than experienced divers etc to rescue those kids with his submarine, then starting calling people childish names because he was wrong ie the pedo thing.

The guy seems to think he knows what's best for world politics by suggesting Ukraine should surrender lost land and that Taiwan should give up it's freedom. We all know musks fans think he's just scared of ww3 starting but he's sucked up to Putin and has huge investment in China, guy gives zero fucks.

Thinks he can run Twitter better than the previous but just lumped it with a load of debt and it's already talking of stepping back and letting someone take over.

The man's ego is unreal where he think he always knows best.

One dude being a big fan of Elon's preferred boot polish is not an indication of a flood of talent lining up to work "long hours" at what is an obvious mess at the moment.
 
So I am seeing multiple reporters saying that the number of employees walking out is in the hundreds. I hope it's accurate, but I guess we will know very soon since the deadline just passed today.

Sure that's possible, but I also don't think anyone knows just how many employees Twitter actually needs. According to insiders Twitter should have imploded a week + ago and hasn't yet, so I get the impression the number is a fraction of who worked there.

Then again maybe it will tonight! I don't know. All I do know is literally none of the scary bad things insiders have been ironically using Twitter to self promote themselves to gain e-clout by making up have happened yet, so I dont know why anyone has reason to believe they will suddenly will.

It wouldn't be "suddenly" its been happening since he got there. Advertisers have been publicly pulling out left and right. That's their main revenue stream. They implemented the $8 "verified" nonsense and it immediately backfired on them amd cost companies billions. There is nothing "sudden" about any of this lol


And people are a bit more dialed up today about it all because the deadline Musk issued to employees expired today and reports across the board is more than a few employees chose the money and leave option. Exact numbers are not confirmed though.


The coming week is gonna be great.

There is certainly market cap growth opportunity if Twitter 2.0 solves some of its problems and dramatically reduces operating costs. Getting in now could be a 10x for RSUs in the best case.

Of course, the people who have already been there for years don't need to bother with some hardcore culture shift. They can bounce and sit on their stock.

If Elon gets a team of people like Hotz in there then Twitter could probably manage at 10% of its previous staffing, or less.

Oh it will definitely be great, there is no downside to any of this. Either Twitter dies and we are better off, or Twitter is made good and we are better off.

Personally I'd rather a Twitter that is good exist, but no Twitter is preferable to what was there before.

This the correct way. People who want Twitter to die now are those who liked that it was being wielded as a tool by a certain demography. A Twitter that is a good has its place.

I'm hoping for the full fireball. I want a dramatic and very public demise of the platform.

Would prefer Facebook or TikTok, but I'll take Twitter failing. Better than nothing. The major social media platforms are a cancer.
