He's not wrong though.
Good. As they should, this deal should be blocked.Wow....Xbox twitter folk seemed emotionally affected by all this.

How is he not wrong?
"Feds likely to challenge Microsoft's $69 billion Activision takeover"
"The Federal Trade Commission is likely to file an antitrust lawsuit to block Microsoft's $69 billion takeover of video game giant Activision Blizzard, maker of the hit games Call of Duty and Candy Crush, according to three people with knowledge of the matter."
I read the article. Not seeing how the article and the headline don't match.
Good. As they should, this deal should be blocked.
I think it should be block because it's as unhealthy as Disney buying fox (that should've been blocked too). But, yeah, your points are valid.Making me agree with Schierer here.
I'm not sure it should be blocked, but I see some Xbox twitter folks are showing what their journalistic integrity is worth. Jack shit. It is fine to favor the brand you cover, but at least call things like it is. Sounds to me like Jez Corden is more interested in keeping his following riled up and enraged than accurate reporting. And I used to respect the guy.
Big companies shouldnt be able to buy big publishers like its a pizza. That is not good for anyone. Dont care who it is. Its bad for everyone period.I think it should be block because it's as unhealthy as Disney buying fox (that should've been blocked too). But, yeah, your points are valid.

I am suprised he is still has a job as a journalist.Ooh boy, here's some more CMA regulatory drama for the party peeps. So today, Microsoft and Sony's statements on the Activision-Blizzard merger were published publicly by the UK regulatory body, the CMA. We've seen snippets of them shared before, but now we have the whole thing, and it's a hilarious insight into Sony's generalized hypocrisy over this whole ordeal. Sony claims Microsoft could foreclose content from Xbox (something Sony does with impunity), while restricting competition (something Sony does by forcing third parties to deny Xbox Game Pass deals), and, get this, Sony claims Microsoft could raise console prices (right after raising the price of the PS5 in most markets).

That is too big.
Sony can't stop the deal, and when it becomes obvious upon its approval that Sony's efforts have failed, I hope to see enough signs that Microsoft moving forward is treating Sony accordingly in light of their mostly dishonest attacks on the deal.
Software is a different story. Sony absolutely raised its prices due to its dominant position. Sony decided to be first through the wall with the next-gen price hike, knowing its dominant position allowed it to soak up the bad consumer optics and still come out on top. And now, people are defending its price increase while other companies follow Sony's lead - proving Sony was correct. Looking at Sony's financials, it's posted healthy, and even record breaking, profits with its PlayStation division for quite some time. A software price increase simply wasn't required or even justified - but Sony knew it had built up such a windfall from the PS4 that now was the time to cash in. And to prime their consumers, they started charging upgrade fees for cross-gen games, making sure their customers couldn't miss the message: next-gen costs more. Activision, EA, Ubisoft; they're just stepping through the breach Sony created. That all of them were and are posting very healthy profits, and all choosing to hike their prices following Sony's move, shows that Sony's dominant position combined with its willingness to wield its influence is deeply harmful for consumers. For Sony to turn around and basically say "if you let Microsoft compete with us by buying ABK, they'll raise prices which will hurt gamers!" is fucking hilarious given that Sony literally just did that.
So, Sony raising its prices is actually beneficial to Microsoft - as long as Microsoft doesn't want to better compete. Brilliant. To compete with Sony, it's competitors just have to weather the most turbulent economic period in the last century, shrinking their profit margins, all while Sony is free to raise its prices, keeping its profit margins thick. It's almost as if - hear me out - Sony's dominant position affords it the luxury of raising its prices when its competitors can't... unless they don't want to be competitors anymore. It's not though, it's beneficial to MS. MS could raise its price now. It even predicts supply constraints meaning MS can. It doesn't because it knows it helps it compete better and can handle the short term loss better ie it knows Sony raising its price and MS remaining lower isn't without effect, contrary to what MS claim.
Which other platform holder increased the cost of its first party titles - titles which are used to sell the platform? Demon's Souls was the first and established the next-gen tax. Sony worked diligently to send a very clear message: next-gen costs more. Why? Because it knew it could, and as a platform holder, it could make it stick. 2K on it's own could do nothing. Activision actually tried inflating the cost of its games back during the Xbox 360 era, and I believe it used MWII 2009 as the spearhead - though, I'd have to check the details to be sure. If I recall, in Australia at least, this was actually reviewed by the ACCC, and the cost of the games came back down. Activision Blizzard couldn't make the price hike stick. This time around, thanks to Sony's efforts as a platform holder (credited in the article), the hike stuck - despite criticism and backlash.Where are you getting the idea that Sony created this "breach"?...
Not really. Sony hiked its prices because it knew it could, and now its claiming that if its competitors can actually compete, then those competitors might raise their prices - which is now harmful to consumers, apparently. Sony is employing a fairly technical regulator pacification strategy known as "throwing shit at a wall".Only if you ignore any and all nuance in the matter.
What you're thinking is going to happen won't and she's not going to be president of the United States either ever!I love Lina Khan. I hope she's president soon.
Lolman so many wishful thinking going on here. This deals going to happen. FTC hasn't won any cases and if they keep losing Lina will be ousted. I really don't think she's going to throw her career away fighting Microsoft who has better lawyers than them to prove Microsoft is anti competitive in a market where it's currently in last place.
Sony can't stop the deal, and when it becomes obvious upon its approval that Sony's efforts have failed, I hope to see enough signs that Microsoft moving forward is treating Sony accordingly in light of their mostly dishonest attacks on the deal.
Activision pulled out of China completely already. EU can't block it they already have a pr battle with that my PlayStation guy. CMA is reading like Sony so in court that won't hold up either. The FTC won't win that case and Lina doesn't want a losing record she loses against Microsoft her career is over.Microsoft has a hell of a battle ahead of them, from all fronts. FTC, CMA, EU, and CHIIIIIIINA
Its gonna be a bumpy ride for sure
Aged like milkI read through Sony's entire argument, and I'm literally in tears as to how weak the arguments are. Many of the claims aren't supported by any real data at all. And where data is provided, much of it is weak and suspect when weighed against more fundamentally objective numbers that demonstrate that not even all of Activision Blizzard's games published worldwide and in the UK combined amount to a percentage of the games industry large enough to do the type of damage Sony claims to Playstation, Independent developers and to multi-game subscriptions or cloud.
All of Activision Blizzard's share of the game publishing market (including once you factor in Xbox's own content) has a market share of less than 20-30% worldwide and in the UK combined. I don't care what Sony says after this, the numbers simply don't lie. As to Activision Blizzard's games on multi-game subscription services, internal documents by Activision themselves make clear it was NEVER going to happen and it's against the way they would want to do business. The only way brand new Activision Blizzard titles appear on a game pass or ps plus like multi-game subscription service (especially day one) is if the current acquisition by Microsoft is allowed to proceed.
How can COD possess the power Sony claims if not even 100% of Activision Blizzard's own games collectively rise to the threat level Sony wants regulators to believe Call of Duty alone does? In short, Sony is relying largely on blatant falsehoods (telling lies) to bring about their wildest desire of killing the deal. Sony's statements about independent developers being harmed fly in the face of what actual independent developers/publishers have said about the deal, which is that they see it as a good thing. Sony is trying to dishonestly use its own self-interest centered on its profits to make the claim that its reasons to be against the deal somehow have more to do with being concerned about the larger industry rather than itself.
Sony can't stop the deal, and when it becomes obvious upon its approval that Sony's efforts have failed, I hope to see enough signs that Microsoft moving forward is treating Sony accordingly in light of their mostly dishonest attacks on the deal.
No way this deal will go through without some harsh compromises. If anything, they might forbid to make any A/B games to be exclusive to MS ecosystem. Good.Microsoft has a hell of a battle ahead of them, from all fronts. FTC, CMA, EU, and CHIIIIIIINA
Its gonna be a bumpy ride for sure
That's not how this works.Activision pulled out of China completely already. EU can't block it they already have a pr battle with that my PlayStation guy. CMA is reading like Sony so in court that won't hold up either. The FTC won't win that case and Lina doesn't want a losing record she loses against Microsoft her career is over.
How's he wrong though has the deal been stopped? Everything's speculation until they do.Aged like milk
It's not been stopped yet and if it goes through, MS will have to compromise hard. It is what it is. Sorry, green guy. How's he wrong though has the deal been stopped? Everything's speculation until they do.
Governments can't dictate what companies do or how they run their businesses. Government can't run the companies just like they couldn't tell Disney don't take all your stuff off Netflix they can't tell Microsoft that. Consent decree to allow call of duty on PlayStation for x amount of years sure. Anything else is not happening. No way this deal will go through without some harsh compromises. Yes, they can, that's what laws and regulations are for. It's not a free for all. Sorry to burst your bubble.Governments can't dictate what companies do or how they run their businesses. Yes, it actually is how it works. Companies aren't free to do whatever they want. There are laws and regulations in place. This isn't the first Industrial Revolution… lolNot how it works suggest you do more research.
The IGN Xbox clan has been on full meltdown the past 24hrs
Lol what about the DOJ? This was a couple days ago and believe me when I say I know this case very well.

Yeah, they lack self awareness and just proves everyone's fear further. That's precisely what everyone is afraid of: MS buying the whole industry.![]()
I love these xbox shills on twitter threatening sony with microsofts money about how many companies they're gonna buy with this "70 billion dollars" if sony doesn't back down.
Week one: "Microsoft is just trying to stay competitive and offer gaming to more people"
Week 60: "Microsft will burn this industry to the ground if sony doesn't back down!"

Government don't run companies or pick winners and loser. Please tell me how Microsoft who's in last place in the video games market is now a monopolistic force that Sony can't compete with? How's game pass bad for consumers? Regulation exist to stop anti competitive behavior there's none of that here in this instance. Sure if Microsoft buys activision and turns around tomorrow and puts in a bid for take two or embracer then yes that be concerning not what's happening now.Yes, it actually is how it works. Companies aren't free to do whatever they want. There are laws and regulations in place. This isn't the first Industrial Revolution… lol
Dude please do some research. Regulators can't just block the merger can you at least read the tweets from the people posting the article. The FTC can sue to block it and they can lose as well. Same with cma and eu can't just stop deals unlawfully because you think something not how that works.Wha... What do you think is going on here? What do you think this entire thread is about? Regulators can shut this entire thing down.
back off sony or else microsoft will buy all of japan
twitter meltdown is always sweet
Based on what steps have actually taken place at this point as well as the history with these types of M/A... You're setting yourself up to look incredibly foolish in the future. It's not been stopped yet and if it goes through, MS will have to compromise hard. It is what it is. Sorry, green guy.
