Introducing my daughter and son to Critters. Used to love these movies when I was their age.

Any recommendations for child-friendly horror? I recently showed my 10-year-old Wednesday on Netfilx, and she loved it.Terrified at times, but completely enthralled with the murder mystery aspect of it.

A bit of mild swearing and gore is okay, but not anything too strong. She's seen Goosebumps. I want to show her Sweeney Todd but I think that's a step too far, maybe in a few years.

The first two Child's Play movies were a hit with the kids. So much so we got a Chucky candy dish from the Halloween store. The bad language is a bit much, but it's a horror movie so the 'shock' is part of the experience.

Pennywise is legendary amongst their friends. They want nothing to do with the movies haha. It's pure nightmare fuel to them so use your best judgement when it comes to your kids.

Child's Play was totally demonised here in the UK after a toddler was murdered in a similar way by a couple of 10-year-olds, so I don't think I could ever show her that. But classic horror is a good call, I enjoyed the old black and white horrors when I was that age.

lol thanks, they are in their mid 20s now though - but they're like me and love incredibly cheesy movies. This year's "thing" has been 80s horror. We usually watch one cheesy / kids movie (Gremlins, Critters, Ghoulies) then follow it up with something actually scary (Fright Night, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, etc.)

And it is about a monster guy with balloons kidnapping kids
But in his original book the movie is based on, this monster was... waaait for it... A CLOWN

Just watched it the other night.

It's a slow burn, and it's mostly from the slashers point of view. It's a cool idea and well executed. Nothing amazing, but if you've enjoyed the first couple of Friday the 13th films, you will like this as well.

There are some brutal kills in it, which I feel like they did well since most of them have a pretty big build up to each kill,

Going to watch Halloween (2018) tonight. Really enjoyed that one and I thought Halloween was back, but then I watched Kills and Ends and thought both were largely dreadful, especially ends.

I also watched V/H/S Beyond last night.

It was exactly like the other entries in the series, if you liked those then theres a good time in this. I quite like low budget special effects coupled with blurry footage. When it works, it just works.

I wouldn't exactly call it horror, but it's nerve-wracking and as always McAvoy in the bad guy role is incredible. Enjoyed it. 7.5/10

I thought it was one of the better entries in the series. I was actually impressed! I was surprised that Mike Flannigan was one of the writers in one of the stories. Recommended!

I think the concept of AI and especially AI-controlled domotica has a lot of potential for a great horror movie... but this wasn't it. Felt like a huge waste of potential because I kind of liked the cast but they squandered it with a very sub par main plot and a cheap made-for-TV feel. I wasn't expecting Demon Seed here, but still.

#3 Strange Darling (2023)

This was one I was actually looking forward to, RLM did a video on this and like them I think Kyle Gallner is a decent actor, but the lead actress was so annoyingly over the top bad I could just not enjoy any of it. Also the movie obviously thought it was hip and smart but anyone that has ever seen a movie will guess all that happens in the first 15 minutes. Don't be fooled by zoomers calling this "Lynchian".

#4 Salem's Lot (2024)

This one I actually enjoyed, felt like a throwback to 90s horror with the black kid kicking ass, and it was just an old fashioned spooky movie which sort of feels like a breath of fresh air these days.

7 watched since October 1st. Mostly over the past couple of days

1. Bram Stoker's Dracula - Only recently got through the book for the first time so decided to watch this. Seemed to remember it got decent reviews at the time. Maybe it was better at the time it came out, but it seemed low budget in a number of places. Also seemed rushed, though maybe that's just because I'm coming from the book which mostly took its time.
2. Evil Dead remake - Have seen this before and thought I didn't remember it too well. I was wrong, as it started to come back to me, so just went through the parts at the beginning quickly. I liked it well enough.
3. Ready or Not - The first Samara Weaving movie on the list. I enjoy "the hunter has become the hunted" type movies when they're fun so enjoyed this.
4. Drag Me to Hell - Another rewatch, though remembered very little about it. It's a weird one where as a comedy horror it's actually a decent horror. Just the things like demon scenes or old woman scenes then bring the comedy.
5. Salem's Lot (the new one) - Haven't seen any of the previous versions but must watch the first one. I've only started getting through King books over the past year or 2 so just got through this book fairly recently. As a standalone film, this is grand. As an adaptation it feels heavily truncated (going from 1 or 2 vampires to the entire town, seemingly over a couple of nights at most) but that's to be expected considering the length of the film compared to the book.
6. Cabin in the Woods - Rewatch. A new take on old horror tropes. Fun.
7. The Babysitter: Killer Queen - Samara Weaving number 2. Another fun film. Watched the first one a couple of years ago. Don't remember it leaning into the comedy elements as much but anothe rone I enjoyed.

Yeah, I'm easily entertained. Just starting Midnight Mass now.

6. Halloween (2018). Really enjoyed this one. 8/10.
7. The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires. Hammer horror goes kung fu. Was just goofy fun 6.5/10.

Hot on the heals of V/H/S Beyond, i stumbled on '94 which I'd not seen either (I thought i'd watched them all). 6/10

I enjoyed the Indonesian section which the mad scientist in particular.

'B' movie anthology horror is my guilty pleasure. I recently re-watched Tales From The Crypt seasons 1-7 and loved every pointless trashy minute.

Creepshow 1&2 is also a good time

Beetlejuice 2 tonight, it can't be as good as the OG but lets see..........

I was there during the filming, stealing food from the craft services table. Clancy Brown is a treat in this. The stories are really out there, but I found the movie to be pretty good overall. Almost the definition of "B movie anthology horror".

Not really, but i thought it was pleasant enough. If you didn't enjoy the first season its more of the same. Some good ones in there.

Edit: Actually thinking about it, there are some good/great episodes, its been a while. Nothing lost if you dont like one, thats why i like this kind of stuff.

My first horror movie this month was The First Omen, and wow that movie was so bad. Can't believe it got so much praise. Just goes to show the bar for mainstream horror tastes.

I watched Terrifier this past week. It started decent but completely went to shit the last 30-45min.

#5 Cuckoo (2024)

A quirky indie horror that was pretty cool for the most part, nice mystery and some fun editing, but I think they fibbed it with the finale where it devolved a bit in a Monster of the Week feature, and the monster was pretty silly.

#6 Apartment 7A (2024)

One I didn't expect to like but I really did, cool atmosphere and I really liked the lead actress in this, I think she did a phenomenal job. Cool ending too with how it tied in with Rosemary's Baby. Seems critics hated this and loved Strange Darling so what do I know.

My 11y.o daughter is currently going through a horror phase which is great as it gives us something we share in common, recently we watched all the Insidious series, nothing mad but plenty of jump scares, working our way through Paranormal & Final Destination

Hellboy : The Crooked Man 5/10
The low budget is clearly evident, but you know what? There are some good aspects in this film. Characters are good, and I liked the "folk horror" vibe to it. It's the most comic accurate film.
Second half takes a serious nosedive, and the film is almost split into two halves. If you do see it I recommend you skip the second half. The minute they mention a mine is when to bail!

Love this film. Remember watching it with my dad, when I was about 7 years old. I have a soft spot for the Amicus portmanteau/anthology films.

#7 Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)

I thought this was a fun ride, some very cool special effects and weird creative stuff. Not an amazing movie but still the best thing Burton did in a very long time.

#8 Speak No Evil (2024)

Unnecessary remake of a two year old Danish film that I had the same issues with as with this one, but then the final third is completely changed with a very different and much worse Hollywood Ending.
