Then the entire studio was all-hands on deck for The Angel of Darkness once Chronicles released. The development was...troubled.

Watch this video and see what happens when you have a publisher shamelessly milking a franchise, a studio burned out from yearly releases and an ambitions release schedule:

The worst part about that game? You can feel its ambition...everywhere. There's a great game underneath all of its issues that never truly shines. The controls are a mess, you can see plenty of doors that were clearly made for you to open and you can't, parts of entire sets created for you to explore that you never get to, etc...the game even has a way for you to make money and you can earn some of it...but you can only spend it around the first few areas of the game in one fucking store. It's really frustrating.

I have a great video for you :

TLDR : crazy amount of work in the details of each levels, most of them completely inaccessible/out of bound/out of reach of the camera to be experienced in game by the player, why? Well they didn't knew what camera angles would be used at the time, so they basically rendered everything, that includes :

I finished AOD twice when I was a 13 yo lad on my PS2 and then once again when I finished the entire classic saga about 7 years ago. I would have never expected I would ever suffer through it play it once again but here we go, lol. I really hope they honor Lara's "time to put things right" quote from the trailer. There's a lot to fix.

Chronicles was okay. Last Revelation is an incredible game, I even put it above TR3, and the remaster looks awesome so far.

A tougher sell than 1-3.

4 had a 100% Egyptian setting, with sprawling levels. I remember needing a walkthrough to complete this one.

5 was very meh - I remember walking zombie babies.

6 had a more modern engine, and just didn’t feel like tomb raider. I remember quite liking the nightclub in Paris, but I also remember something along the lines of pushing a block/statue to be told ‘You feel stronger now’, and all of a sudden being able make a jump or break a door that I couldn’t before. Just random nonsense.

Will still buy day 1 because it’s Tomb Raider, but hey!

The Red-headed stepchildren of the series to be sure....buyers beware.

same i am jumping into aod
I remember back then i was super excited for AoD. The game got delayed and i was desperate.

The dark tone story had potential but it was a bit disapointing.
The Ghost fight for example is just stupid, i was stuck in there for days. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

They introduced some stuff and the game felt a little more like a graphic adventure with Lara interacting with NPCs and all.

Take the good with the bad lol. I'll be getting them. I'm glad all 6 games are on current consoles so there not lost to time.

I feel like I’m the only person who defends Chronicles. Never thought this collection would happen so I’m in day one.

And I’ve never understood why people love Last Revelation. I always found it so insanely boring. I’m going to have to try it yet again when this comes out after seeing all the love in this thread.

Holy moly! My favorite Angel of Darkness is finally getting a remaster. Time to crawl through Louvre again. Please please make controls better this time so that I CAN FEEL STRONGER NOW!

My problem with Chronicles is that i just like half of the levels, Rome and Russian Sub.
While Last Revelation has more good ones, Egypt is just cooler. A younger myself was thrilled with all that stuff about Seth / Horus / Semerkhet.

Hopefully they learned their lesson from this

I read that as:

"We love money. We put this warning sign just to please our DEI overlords."

Do you remember the second half of the game being incredible moody/dark or was that just me? My kid mind could not comprehend a mainstream game being this eerie.

I could see that. The Chronicles levels are all so different some may not stick. But the variety is why I preferred it. TLR is just so redundant looking for the first third (more?) of the game.

I think when I finally play AOD it might make the 360 trilogy make more sense.

I played the 360 trilogy recently and Lara's personality was a total 180 from her Playstation 1 games. She was much colder, cutthroat, and angry in Legend and Underworld. She was kind of an asshole, especially to this one guy in TR Legend where she essentially broke into his place and shot him.

I always wondered where this switch came from and I figured AOD is the key answer.

Edit: I also wonder if they'll pull from the Dreamcast versions for the first two games.

I mean, yeah, a bit, like that Sanitarium level with Kurtis, or being hunted by the wolf mutant thing ("proto-nephilim", was it?) or the castle at the end. Then again Tomb Raider has often toyed with survival horror elements and atmosphere.

I LOVED that part of the game.
Though the game itself was pretty bad because of numerous glitches/bugs, i absolutely grew fond of the game for that eerie/dark tone. It's unique in the serie.
The monstrum plot really worked on giving me goosebumps when i was 12 lol.

I like how the store description for IV-VI trilogy says: Her legacy lives on! Play the next series of Tomb Raider adventures in this remastered collection of the Darkness Trilogy. Because in fact IV-V also had a bunch of dark parts - City of the Dead in IV and Ireland in V come to my mind.

I hope they take their time with VI, which definitely needs more rework, controls-wise especially. If they also restore the cut story parts, like the Shaman stuff at the beginning, they'll have all my respect.

AoD was a pain in the ass to complete back then but it had its moments imo. I'm curious to see how much will get improved.

If they do a seventh gen trilogy next I hope they make smart decisions. It would likely be Legend, Anniversary and Underworld but the question is which versions do they go for? Some prefer the PS2-style visuals while others prefer the 360 'next-gen' versions. Legends is already available as a PS2 classic on PS5 right now, so I guess the logical option is basing it on the 360 version. Anniversary's best version is supposedly the DLC version released for Legend. I remember Underworld also had some fantastic per-object motion blur as well as exclusive DLC on the 360.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.

They tend to redo the graphics so this doesn't matter.
If anything all 3 should be better than Underworld on a high-end PC

Aspyr is doing God's work with these remasters. The first trilogy is tits, definitely picking up the 2nd trilogy and it's gonna be my first run through AoD so I'm looking forward to that FS.

Between this, the LoK remasters, and the SSRemake I just picked up I'm gonna be eating good for the next few months.

Btw: Underworld is 98 cents on Steam and it's probably the best TR game that Crystal D made imo.

I remember thinking Angel of Darkness was the worst in the series by a country mile. Its platforming was awful compared to everything that came before it.

Excellent news! The remastered trilogy was easily my game of the year, being a crusty old so and so. I've clocked 150 hours on it which I haven't done since, oooh, I reckon at least decade or so ago.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

I have never played that one, only through osmoses do I know that game was crap, maybe it's time to finally try it in a (hopefully) bug free state.

Best 2024 announcement

Fun fact I never knew AoD was so buggy in it's US release until recently, I watched a video showing the bugs and I understand why some hate it so much, glad I didn't played that version lol
