Lack of urgency from Nintendo

The situation is unforgivable given the fact that Sony and Microsoft released next gen consoles 5, almost 6 years ago. To me consoles should be launch together, releasing one now would disrupt things. What does GAF think? Has this occurred before?

It seems the narrative is that the Switch U2 is going to disappoint... I think the reception (online) will be underwhelming. but because is old as fuck, the adoption rate should be fast I guess

Nintendo isn't directly competing with them so they don't have to care so much about what they do because their market is not the same. Sure their is overlap but they decide what makes sense for them and I think this is driven by their software more than the hardware. They want bangers and regardless of what is shown they will not shift their timetable for gamers who are on forums. They are focusing on the mass market.

I prefer a Nintendo that completely ignores the other platforms and thinks of its competition as "any other pastime that could claim your attention."

I recall them saying a few years ago that YouTube or doomscrolling or whatever was more their direct competition than whatever Sony/MS happen to be doing at any given time, and I like that way of thinking.

Not "gaming is a genre in which there are a few companies competing over the same kind of thing" but more "we're an entertainment/toy company and we compete with all entertainment."

Nintendo launched their Gen9 console 7 years ago... Sony and Microsoft were the late ones.

the Switch 2 is the first Gen10 console

When the switch 2 is finally unveiled by nintendo they'll reveal industry leading tech inside of the console that we've never seen before. Nintendo will reveal to us that the console be able to play games up to 1080p at 60fps and also that the 8nm chip inside in the switch 2 is powered by real power NINTENDO POWER BABY!!!!!!!!

You make no sense OP, they won't disrupt anything, their hardware has been 1 generation behind for the last 20 years and it will be no different this time, Nintendo has been all about software and gameplay mechanics innovation since the Nintendo DS and everything points at the Switch 2 being just a more powerful version of the Switch and nothing else, Nintendo releasing a new console changes absolutely nothing, except funnily enough sabotaging their own Switch sales.

You really want a new console so bad that just feeds remakes of old games and they charge full price? Just play the old games they won't look much different.

You must be new to gaming. Nintendo does things on their own timeline since the Wii. They are sitting on the best selling console of all time right now, they don't need to be urgent about anything. We know the switch 2 is coming and is in production.

No, Sony and Microsoft were not late. Nintendo bailed on Wii U in the middle of the generation. Wii U was on the market a little over 4 years when Nintendo released Switch.

Not saying that is bad. Wii U was just a failure and Nintendo had to move on from it sooner in the generation than the other two.

Nintendo does their own thing. If they could squeeze a few more years out of the Switch, they would.

I'm playing through the Mario rpg remake right now on switch and it's better than 99% of new games out now. So Nintendo is doing something right in my opinion.

Switch 2 is coming, they know, we know, and it'll sell like hotcakes regardless of Nintendo's announcement plans. They have a plan, they know when they want to announce it and likely will stick to that. Until then - we all hyperventilate.

They'll release it whenever they see fit and you'll buy it anyway.

Nintendo has big dick energy. Everybody does the free marketing for them now. Hype is building and they're profiting.

the Xbox was also only on the market for 4 years 🤷 2001-2005

it's still only logical to count the Switch as Gen9, since the 3DS and the Wii U are considered Gen8.
as a successor to both of these Gen8 systems, the Switch is Gen9, and by extension the Switch 2 is Gen10.
Handhelds were always out of step after all 😉

I'm not saying Switch isn't Gen9. I'm saying Nintendo started Gen9 early.

Series S/X and PS5 launched in November of 2020. That was 4 years and 2 months ago.

I mean yes... but also no...

the Switch is also a handheld, and as a new handheld to replace the 3DS, it was just in time!

I like how Nintendo do what they want and answers/bows to no one, so the only thing people can do is either cry or suffer. Reminds me of years worth of "Switch 2 rumors" that Nintendo didn't give a crap about.

Nintendo does what it wants & makes a lot of money. Yes a lot of their decisions are questionable but they make $.

All of us that want one & can afford it will very likely have a Switch 2 by Summer.

It does stink to get piece meal information though making you constantly check for new leaks. Nintendo could stop that right now but won't until they want to.

Nintendo has been marching to their own beat since the Wii days (2006). A bit late to be shocked by Nintendo's usual routine OP.

I think they're being very clever about it. This gen is a mess with cross-gen titles. Nintendo has everything to gain releasing their weak system in the middle of the competitors gen. They'll be able to get ports of everything from the last gen, ports of everything that's cross-gen now, and downgraded ports of games that are only on Ps5/XBXS.

Then things will become more problematic when Ps6/Nextbox arrive, but there'll likely be a very hefty cross-gen period for those as well. So they'll still stay relevant despite that until they move onto their next system.
