Price was a factor, but it does not matter what price you go for if huge ammounts of the DS and Wii customers had simply moved onto other things.Yeah but the price was probably a bigger issue, hence the price drop from $249 to $169 within the first 6 months. If they launched at $169 they very likely sell alot more units even with the lackluster launch lineup. Stuff like 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 came out in holiday 2011 but they didn't bother waiting to see if those titles would bolster sales of the system at $249. I also think by this point the Wii was losing steam which might have also led to the quick price-drop.
I remember, and I don't recall the specifics of the promotion, getting the red 3Ds holiday 2011 from Bestbuy with Mario Kart 7/3D land/Zelda OOT for $200.
The Swich brand and momentum is on another level, also the software sales are also very telling.I still remember the Wii U reveal and people on forums discussing for a good hour whether or not it was a new console with screenshots zooming in on the console itself trying to figure out of it was a Wii for something else.
Switch 2 is something entirely different
We had also many GAFers saying this is going to be a huge success, and were citing the Wii for their reasoning.I still remember the Wii U reveal and people on forums discussing for a good hour whether or not it was a new console with screenshots zooming in on the console itself trying to figure out of it was a Wii for something else.
Switch 2 is something entirely different
didnt even show a game annnnnd fastest views of all time ahah you are delusimalWe will see I guess, so far hype has been pretty low and the announcement was trash.
bump them later when it breaks sells records bookmark confirmedI think these Switch doom threads are absolutely fucking pathetic off the back of a two and a half minute trailer![]()
WiiU reveal was something else. You got a girl standing on a weight scale, video calling, drawing, shuriken, and a few other BSI still remember the Wii U reveal and people on forums discussing for a good hour whether or not it was a new console with screenshots zooming in on the console itself trying to figure out of it was a Wii for something else.

Yes, but I only said price was a bigger factor for the poor launch compared to game selection ( which the person I replied to spoke of). I wasn't making the case that the system wasn't chiefly affected by the state of the market at that time( notably that both 3DS and Vita came out when mobile gaming was taking off, and made the concept of dedicated portable gaming devices feel antiquated). I'm glad the market got off that line of thinking and we're now in a handheld renaissance.Price was a factor, but it does not matter what price you go for if huge ammounts of the DS and Wii customers had simply moved onto there things.

Nintendo only makes cross gen games when they already announced the older gen version.
so I doubt Nintendo will make any real cross gen games besides Metroid Prime 4 and Pokemon Z-A
they also don't need to. their games sell well for years. like, remember how long it took to get Mario Kart 8 out of the top 10 charts? it was ridiculous.
so they don't need to sell it on Switch to recoup development costs.
Nintendo usually doesn't do cross gen unless the game was already promised on the older system. So I doubt it will release on the Switch 1.
my bet is that the only cross gen games are Metroid Prime 4 and Pokemon ZA
well, on the one hand they would leave a very large install base out of the potential sales,
on the other hand Nintendo games have WAAAAAAAY lower budgets than those games that need to have such an install base to be profitable.
Nintendo doesn't need MK9 to sell 20 million copies to make a profit from it,
but they can use it to promote their new console with exclusive new games.
I think MK9 is way more valuable in the long run as an exclusive for them, than it would be if it was cross gen.
especially if we take into account the fact that games like that keep selling millions of copies even years after launch.
MK8 Deluxe, which was already a rerelease of MK8, was in the top 10 sales charts for what felt like years. every week it was not a question of if it will be there, just a question of where in the top 10 it will be this week.
HALF of ALL Switch owners also own Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
so every second new Switch user also bought Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. in fact it should be more than half, as there are probably many people that bought multiple Switch systems over the years, but only 1 copy of MK8 Deluxe
nah, Nintendo doesn't roll like that.
Nintendo's games do not have the bloated budgets that require massive install bases to make money, they also don't require to sell instantly within the first 6 months of release.
Nintendo games have steady sales over long periods of time, while at the same time barely getting price cuts for years.
Nintendo's own games will not be cross-gen unless already announced for Switch 1 in the past. so Metroid Prime 4 and Pokemon Z-A will be cross gen, the next 3D Mario absolutely will not be, neither will be Mario Kart 9.
For Nintendo both of these games have much more value as system sellers for the Switch 2 than they have as games to make profit with directly.
Mario Kart 9 will not release on Switch 1.
I would bet on that even.
the next 3D Mario game will also not release on Switch 1 and will probably release within the first year of the system.
that's another bet I'd take.
Splatoon 4 will also not release on Switch 1, but that might not come within the first year.
not a single big Nintendo game that isn't already announced for Switch 1 will release on Switch 1. there's no reason to believe otherwise. Nintendo doesn't need to sell 20 million copies of their games to make a profit, but Nintendo needs to establish a big userbase for Switch 2 as quickly as possible.
therefore releasing any game on Switch 1 that isn't already announced for it would be a stupid move on their part.
Pokémon Z-A and Metroid Prime 4 will absolutely be their only big titles that will be cross gen.
they will probably release some small titles for Switch 1 for maybe a year or so, just to make it not look pike like they instantly abandoned it. but those games will be stuff like remasters.
what Nintendo doesn't need is sell 10+ million copies for each game they make.
their development budgets aren't even half as big as those of other AAA Devs. their most expensive projects maybe cost 100 million dollars at most, which isn't comparable to the 300+ million budgets of Sony, Ubisoft or Microsoft games.
there won't be cross gen versions for any big Nintendo games... it just doesn't make sense for them on any metric.
See how pathetic this is O onQ123 ?Bumping this just to say, I was 100% correct.
after the announcement just now of not even a Splatoon Spinoff, a clearly smaller project, coming to Switch 1, but being Switch 2 exclusive... I think it's safe to say what I said about Nintendo and Cross Gen was completely and 100% correct.
so suck it everyone who disagreed
