Is Dark Souls 1 the best game this century? Ever?

Now days on a fresh start, I can run through and hardly die. Am I "good"? Probably not. But I know the mechanics and what to do in order to not struggle. I'll die in Mario platforms too. But now I've played Mario enough to know its mechanics as well. Same principle.

Dark souls isn't a hard game. I do Not say that as some "boast". I'm shit at games in general probably
You're better than me. I played it for a day or two and turned it off and traded it back to GameStop. I didn't have enough autism to do the repetition required to git gud.

It would be on the short list for me.

Bloodborne
World of Warcraft
Metroid Prime
Breath of the Wild
MGS3
Diablo II
Baldurs Gate 3
Sekiro

Somewhere in that tier. I do prefer Bloodborne.

That game is brilliant. You can be OP in 15 minutes hardly trying IF YOU want to.

That's why it's brilliant. You can be super OP or super depraved

Up to you. No mods needed for that. Just use the game and its world and mechanics and its possible to be a beast with little effort

Any parry tips? I'm not exactly new to the genre. But I'm at a certain leader in a camp EARLY on that's got my ass stumped. Can't recall his name. He's not a "boss". Just some dumb camp leader I'm guessing.

No idea what to do other than attempt after attempt
I cant give you concrete tips other than practice makes perfect, there is NPC at beginning of the game called Hanbei The Undying, you can use him to practice parry without risking getting killed.

You can run. Grab an Uchi or Drake Sword in 5-10 minutes. Level up Dex. Summon for boss fights. Be super OP with no effort at all.

Same with armor and rings for buffs etc

Fair. Forgot about him. I'm probably in need of that. It's genuinely a masterpiece of a game, you can see it. I'm just so shit at combat. It's embarrassing

I own both. Definitely can't say I've beaten either. I know. Shameful. Elden ring kinda just feels like open world DS. And that's fine. Love its atmosphere and such too. But I'm just obsessed with DS actual world is all. Far far more than other souls games.

I admit I LOVE DS2 btw. Sorry

Why its shamefull?
In order for you to beat something you really need to dive in its mechanics. Bloodborne in specific might be a real pain in terms of difficulty, but once you dive in and get interested you probably gonna beat it. Alot of unnecessary and drag mechanics are out, so its less forced than the rest.

As someone who's beat DS1 twice. 300+ hours across several platforms.

Not to even mention other souls games

I should be equipped to beat EARLY game Sekiro. But it's a different beast

Bloodborne is to Dark Souls as Led Zeppelin IV is to Led Zeppelin II: Both great, but Bloodborne and LZIV are GOAT.

I'm replaying Bloodborne on PC at 60fps at the moment.

I just want an official Steam release with 60fps and I'll be in it.

I'm holding out. No matter how long it takes. I know that's dumb

Nah. Just needed a reason to talk about it ya know. Get my feelings known. Put it out in the ether. Tell it to anyone not named me or my friends who don't care bout souls likes or even video games lol

Im with you 100% brother. Your feelings are valid.

It's great, but not even the top of my FromSoft list.
I know. Many say that. I just FELL in love with it. Its entire world is perfect to me. Can't explain it. Not well anyhow. It's just a perfect game. Perfect as a human can make. It's got an answer for every problem. Even people who's never played a game can beat it. By using its mechanics

Didn't ask to fall in love. But it happened. I'm committed now.

How is the successor more important than the original, Demon's Souls? Dark Souls only exists because of that, just like the other successors.
Truth. But demons souls didn't catch fire with fans like dark souls. Was it because of exclusivity? Not sure. But it was Dark Souls that planted the genre on the map. Undeniable

why are you asking if it is the best video game in the past century vs. ever? aren't they the same thing? have video games been made outside the last century?

I don't agree it's objectively the best game since 2000 but I think people can choose way worse games.

it would probably make my top 10 along with games like Witcher 3, Elden Ring, Skyrim, BOTW & TOTK, BG3 (took a while for this one to click with me), RE4, Yakuza 0 (best story ever in a video game IMO), KOTOR, FO:NV, Diablo 2, etc.

It's hard for me to rank them in order, if I had to I'd probably put Witcher 3 at top

edit: my bad misread title originally

Phew 😮‍💨 Witcher 3 had all my time.

Get this. Never played it's expansions, which some say is better than the original game.

But put almost 100 hours into the base game

I'm DYING to get back into it. I own its expansions. But you know how it is. I forgot how the combat or anything works in it. So I boot it up. Feel lost. And quit.

It's a situation where I need a new playthrough with tutorial.

I got obsessed with it. Bought the Witcher necklace geralt wears and all.

Personally, I didnt have a PS3 so Demon passed me by back then. But DS is better than Demon anyway.

For me its greatness comes down to a simple fact: it affected my relationship with games. Its like there is a before and after DS.

Of course this is all personal stuff, opinions, but I understand and agree with Crimson. It is a magic game, and its hard to put into words what makes it so special.

I enjoy it, but the second half drags it down quite a bit. Bloodborne is easily my favourite From title, but all the games are great.

similar story. I never beat the base game. before people judge me for ranking it as my #1, I put over 100 hours in it wish is more than enough to form an opinion. I played it immediately after beating Witcher 2 which probably added to the experience as it picked up exactly where Witcher 2 left off.

the next gen update was announced for PC so I took a break thinking I'd hop back in once the update came out.

I plan on starting fresh when I have some downtime as that game is a time sink.

debating whether to replay Witcher 2 as I enjoyed that game a lot too and have been wanting to revisit it

Tried Witcher 2 years ago. Maybe I'll try again. But it felt so outdated mechanics wise. Beyond belief. And that was when I was OBSESSED with TW3. Totally sold on everything Geralt does or says.

also I prefer Demon Souls to Dark Souls but it was my first Souls game. I picked it up pretty much blind for PS3 back in the day and remember having my mind blown as it reminded me of the absurdly punishing games I grew up on like Ghosts n Goblins

idk why but at the time the most frustrating part of the game for me was those damn Crystal lizards. I'm OCD about collecting stuff and one of those escaped it broke my brain

yeah combat is rough in Witcher 2. I mean it isn't even great in Witcher 3 and it is way worse in Witcher 2.

I remember the story being fantastic though and Witcher 3 HEAVILY relies on the story from the first 2 games.

at a minimum you definitely should watch YouTube summaries of those games if you don't plan on playing them.

I think Witcher 3 actually makes you pick some decisions at the start to help shape your experience if you don't have a Witcher 2 save file, and those decisions won't make sense without knowing what happened in the first 2 games

I'd pay lots of cash to play demon souls. Never have. And no… not buying the PS3 version lol

Crystal lizards I never mess with as they give twinkling titanite. I never use it

No idea. Played it fresh. No backstory. Still one of my best games I've played this century. TW3 tops the list of mine. Easily. No question. I'm ADHD sometimes in games.

If I throw 90+ hours into a game. It's an obsession. This game owned me. TW3 and DS1 both did. I FEEL DS1 is more accessible for me personally

As I can go a while without it and still jump right in and it's fine.

I don't agree with that. The second half of Dark Souls is possibly the weakest of all Soulsborne games. Demon's is solid throughout.

It often comes down to which you played first.

I think this is largely it. after playing Demon Souls I didn't play Souls games for a while then played DS3 followed by DS1 a couple years later. I preferred DS3 to DS1 one but DS1 one just seems like a better game. definitely some sort of bias/nostalgia at play.

That's probably true. But I've found my true love. It's DS1. I love It and all its flaws unconditionally

Bed of chaos is misunderstood is all

Season 4 No GIF by The Office

It's great but nah

Dark Souls II, Bloodborne, Sekiro and Elden Ring are all better
Let me tell you, folks, Dark Souls 2 is fantastic, absolutely fantastic, and totally underrated—believe me. People say, "Oh, it's not as good as the others," but they're wrong, so wrong. It's got the best world design—huge, beautiful, tremendous—Majula alone is like Mar-a-Lago of video games. The challenge? Unbelievable. It's tough, but fair, like negotiating a great deal. And the DLCs? Top-notch, the best. Nobody talks about it enough, but I'm here to say it: Dark Souls 2 is a winner, a total gem, and I know gems, folks!

Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Darksiders II, and Kingdoms of Amalur edge it out for me as far as action-RPG hybrids with a connected map. Their combat, loot, and builds are just more entertaining.

never heard of it but I love deck building and this seems like an interesting integration of it, downloading it right now
Not to scare you off, but the campaign is a 100 mission tutorial and it's not always obvious who you need to talk to in order to progress. there is an actual story and for what itis, it's actually pretty good. There is a small pocket of people who play online. If you need help finding folks to play with let me know, I can point you in adirection
