Obviously a decent amount of backlash with Nintendo pricing MKW and other games at $80.

But do we feel like the industry as a whole is heading this way? Personally, as much as I hate this price, I think it was as much a timing thing as a Nintendo arrogance thing - between tariffs and other economic uncertainty this felt bound to happen and Nintendo seems to have chosen to do it up front as opposed to be in an awkward position where they have to consider raising prices a few months from now. They've kept DKB at $70 so this seems to be them giving that flexibility and creating precedence for the $80 if they do want to move to it as a standard.

So do we think other companies move this way in the immediate term? There's already been plenty of rumblings that GTAVI will be up to $100. This + Nintendo would in theory give the greenlight to anyone else to do the same. Alternatively, they can keep themselves at $70 and gain some goodwill from the average consumer while offsetting this with higher priced premium versions of there games (3 days early access, DLC included, etc.)

I know we like to talk about the budget of games relative to the price but the reality is there's never really been a correlation there.

Personally, I'd be surprised if others aren't hitting $80 this calendar year. And while I think Nintendo opened the door, I do think it was coming either way.

Think that depends on a lot of things. How successful the Switch is and how successful 80 dollar games are on it.

GTA6 might be 80 dollars or more and might sell online separately.

All of this COULD open the door for games like The Witcher 4, Intergalactic, e.t.c. to be 80+ I don't think it'll be the standard rate.

No, and I think there may also have been moments when they regretted moving to $70. At $60 it's far easier to justify a day 1 purchase, when the hype is at its peak. Once you enter the "wait for a sale" zone, it's far easier to just wait until $70 becomes $20. $70 is just slightly too much to be frivolous.

Maybe not at the end of this year. But early next year? Yeah, that would be my guess. Plus all bets are off now that GTA VI is going to launch at $70 lol

(tbf, GTA VI is one of the few games I'd pay a premium for. Shit's AAAAA)

Sony and others already charge $100+ for the "complete" (all that content that was carved out and sold separately) game at launch, of course they'll move the base up.

GTA VI will be $80 now, no question. Not sure if they will charge more for physical.

I think Sony's next full on AAA title from some of their big studios will be $80 as well.

MS… maybe COD?

EA probably won't do $80 since a lot of their income is MTX. Same with Take 2 and NBA.

I just wonder how much they will sell the "complete editions" with season passes & dlc's then.
200 ? lmao
I mean Blizzard already did that atrocious Diablo 4 early access edition. Not sure how much that was in the States, think it was 119 canadian?

No, unless some stuff like the new USA tariffs hit them hard or something like that, they already increased their prices when released PS5 back in 2020.

If something, they may do it for the PS6 games once it releases late 2027 / early 2028.

But at least the regular $70 (and whatever it was in CA) edition existed. There won't be a $70 Marion Kart World or GTA VI (guessing on this one).

I expect $80 for GTA6

People here have been telling us to expect to pay more for games for a while now and their arguments seem solid.

Yes. They will blame tarrifs, inflation, and alqaeda for it, but they will go to $80. They have to. They are licensed cunts. Greedy cocksuckers who will do anything to get that bonus they can spend on flying out an onlyfans whore. Hope they get aids.

Most likely this year from publishers like Activision, 2k, Ubisoft, WB, EA will certainly love to make the jump as fast as they can, and GTA6 will be the precursor to everyone to finally ask for the journo media to publish articles on why they need it to be that way.

Exactly, apart from a few exceptional games I get at release the ones I put on the wait for sale usually stays there until at least 50% off (but more often 75%).

Yeah by the end of this year or early next year.
Switch 2 will come out, people will complain but they'll buy the console and expensive games anyway.
Then GTA is going to come out for $80 or $90 and break sales record.

By then most people will be have gotten used to the sticker shock and everyone else will just start charging $80 with little pushback.

100 for GTA 6. Everyone else will follow suit after that.

I'm not sure why people are complaining. Accounting for inflation, games were still more expensive in the 90s. We should be paying at least 150 per game now. We're getting a bargain. We should be begging publishers to take more of our money.

Am I doing that right? Thats the current narrative, isn't it?

They already charge 80 Euro.

Sony will relatively quick because thats what happens when you have no competition but everyone wanted this by cheering for MS to fail

With all these increases, Steam will be the best platform than already is. These companies should start practicing regional prices.

Of course they will. People seem to think Nintendo is setting a new bar, no they're just following the business trend of other publishers. Premium digital PSN games cost £70 here, Mario Kart World physical will be £75 which actually is logical by comparison. As much as I dislike this, it's inevitable that we will be charged even more unless we stop supporting these games in droves.

I feel like Rockstar is going to fuck around and find out that at $90 or $100 people will even put off a GTA VI purchase. I hope they're smart enough to leave it at $70 and rake in the cash.

These companies literally charge extra now for artificial early access on games that come out with performance issues...they will try until a few big examples tank, or consoomers will consoom until they get the industry they deserve.

The blueray discs are already much cheaper, so keep the prices and make a big deal out of it.
Parents will be the ones buying the games.
